Question about device at Myrtle Avenue stop

Hi all. I was in Middle Village over the weekend and I took the M into Manhattan. I noticed at the Myrtle Avenue stop this device with a bunch of buttons on the platform between the center track and the Queens-bound track. It was about eight to ten feet above the platform, and it had several buttons, marked "M", "J", "Z", and "M-Line", as well as lights, what looks like a speaker, and a label "MOTA", which may have been put there by some feckless youth ;) I couldn't take a picture. My father guessed that the device could control the interlocking to route trains along any of the lines. Ideas?

Thanks!
