New Orleans under hurricane warning as Isaac threatens to hit Gulf Coast

For those of you who thought that that this was going to do minor damage, I don't think an initial damage estimate of $1.5 billion and a death toll of 38 (13 more than Hurricane Andrew) is quite minor, to say the least. Any tropical system, no matter how strong, will devistate regions when it stalls. Just look at Agnes and Allison to see how "weak" tropical systems can cause billions in damage when it essentially stalls out.

Thank You. Actually without the safety evucations that was planned in the gulf the death toll would be much higher.

I don't have time to read everything on this thread, so simply put, we've experienced plenty of Hurricanes and Tropical Storms before in New York, the most recent direct hit was Tropical Storm Irene last year around August 27th & 28th, the eye passed over around the Queens/Nassau Border. However, we shouldn't be ignorant and like oh this and oh that, oh why is the media giving so much attention to New Orleans, simply because we are New York. We are as vulnerable as any city in the Gulf Coast, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic Regions. In fact studies show that Manhattan will be like a war zone after a certain wind speed has reached. The buildings would ultimately be turned into wind tunnels that will break weak building glasses and pull out ad banners.

We have to know Hurricane safety like our fellow Americans down south and we shouldn't be ignorant and self centered like what New Yorkers seem to be. Until 100's of people die because of their ignorance, the ultimate victim is the city and tax payers due to stupid lawsuits that shouldn't be happening. New York is just like New Orleans, St. Louis, Shanghai, Tokyo and such. Though natural disasters aren't as frequent, but we should be prepared, not be ignorant, no matter what. Sorry if this is posted a bit late, I was tracking this storm around the clock, but still have to teach New Yorkers a lesson...

Yeah but a Hurricane only comes up the coast like that ever 50 years or so. Large hurricanes down south are a regular occurrence, just like Tornadoes in the midwest and Earthquakes in California.

Nope, we've had so far more than 10 tornadoes here in the last decade, including Microbursts. Hurricanes, we have had several misses by a very small margin (in fact outer bands touched us few times), but one direct (Irene). So with warming seas and climate and rising oceans, we shouldn't make excuses and be ignorant.

Mhmm, with TONS of damage. 10 Tornadoes in a decade is an incredibly low number compared to some other places.

Well, do you want a Tornado as strong as the one Joplin faced? Then you ought to be thankful and not be ignorant that mother nature can cause. We can talk because of mother nature, or we'll never be talking today.
