metsfan Posted August 1, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 1, 2008 So i went exploring the R8 line in and around newtown today. It is currently inactive, but not abandoned. It will take me some time to upload everything & post here, so enjoy a vid while i finish up. MattTrain Posted August 1, 2008 Share #3 Posted August 1, 2008 It's interesting to tell us about an inactive rail line in Pennsylvania, that's for sure, but walking in the tracks? That's really a big something. Well I hope that rail line will be fixed up soon, it doesn't look like it's totally worn out, it looks like it can be fixed in a matter of weeks before the rail cars hit that line. metsfan Posted August 1, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted August 1, 2008 Thanks! I was really very careful when i did this, i even left my bike helmet on just in case. The bridge is by far the part in the best shape, even with the part damaged by fire. It was scary, but not really as unsafe as it seems, the wide angle of the lens makes it look a lot more dangerous than it is, though still, if someone is going to go up there against my warnings.... i wouldn't recommend it for people who are not nimble and have a REALLY good equilibrium. I will be posting all the photos and videos related to my trek tomorrow night as i need sleep now. Glad you all enjoyed the appetizer of what is to come! - Andy
MattTrain Posted August 2, 2008 Share #6 Posted August 2, 2008 Those are great photos, now I can see that rail line hasn't been used in a long time. Do you remember what was the last year it was used before it's currently out of service.
7LineFan Posted August 2, 2008 Share #7 Posted August 2, 2008 I'm seeing a lot of red X's after the pic of the brick staircase. The ones I can see are great.

metsfan Posted August 2, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted August 2, 2008 Those are great photos, now I can see that rail line hasn't been used in a long time. Do you remember what was the last year it was used before it's currently out of service. 1983-1984. I believe the last service to the newtown end was a george school winter break run that took people back to philly (for the airport etc) for the winter break. After that i am unsure. - Andy

Harry Posted August 4, 2008 Share #12 Posted August 4, 2008 Very interesting report. That line looks like it runs through peoples backyards. I'd say it would take serious $$$ along with a couple of diesels to bring that line back up to par. It would be nice for Newton to get it going again. The line does looks pretty much abandoned. The tracks that cross the street are completely covered by asphalt. Thanks for posting man.
metsfan Posted August 4, 2008 Author Share #13 Posted August 4, 2008 Very nice Andy Thank you. It was like 95 degrees and i had to dodge cars and all most fall 45 feet into some water but it was worth it! - Andy
