Transit / Train museum

Does any one know of any museum around NYC  that would have few old trains on display, Rail road trains , Rail road cars....

I promised to take someone to a place like that, but i dont want to go to Indiana, to check out their New York Central Rail road museum  ( BTW why is it in Indiana ????? )

It's hardly close by, but as a kid I went to the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore and it was very cool.

Also, not quite a museum but there's an operating Steam Locomotive out near Mystic, CT.

They do a "your hand on the throttle" program where they give you a half day course and let you operate the thing (with supervision) up and down their line. The actual engineer is sitting behind you giving you cues on the air brake (apply, lap, release) but that still is one of the most awesome things I've done. 

 

Although, in looking at their website that costs $500 and is completely sold out for the rest of 2013. Welp.
