paulrivera Posted October 13, 2013 Share #2 Posted October 13, 2013 Closest one for rail cars is in Danbury, CT across from the Metro-North station. In most cases, you change trains at South Norwalk for the diesel Danbury branch train if you come in on the NH line. http://www.danbury.org/drm/
itmaybeokay Posted October 13, 2013 Share #3 Posted October 13, 2013 It's hardly close by, but as a kid I went to the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore and it was very cool. http://www.borail.org/ Also, not quite a museum but there's an operating Steam Locomotive out near Mystic, CT. http://www.essexsteamtrain.com/ They do a "your hand on the throttle" program where they give you a half day course and let you operate the thing (with supervision) up and down their line. The actual engineer is sitting behind you giving you cues on the air brake (apply, lap, release) but that still is one of the most awesome things I've done. Although, in looking at their website that costs $500 and is completely sold out for the rest of 2013. Welp.
AndrewJC Posted October 14, 2013 Share #4 Posted October 14, 2013 Can we safely assume that you know about the New York Transit Museum and have ruled it out (either because it isn't what you're looking for or because you've been there already)? FamousNYLover Posted October 14, 2013 Share #5 Posted October 14, 2013 There's Oyster Bay Railroad Museum, Riverhead Railroad Museum and Greenport Railroad Museum in Long Island as well. Oyster Bay Railroad Museum is much easier from Queens.
