rosskin92 Posted November 8, 2013 Share #1 Posted November 8, 2013 Hey all. I'm going out to Boston in January, looking at planning a trip to NYC for the day. I'm staying out near Worcester,MA, about an hour and a half from New Haven. I have a car at my disposal, so I have an idea. Thinking about driving to NH, parking , getting on a MN train to NYC and back. Questions about fares... What are the weekend fares? The off peak ones? Or do the on peak ones apply. What is the parking avaliablity in New Haven? Best to get there early, or could you get a spot at 8am? What is driving around NH like? I've only been through once, and that was on I-95. Route I'm looking at is I-90 -> I-84->I-91. 120 miles and a hour and a half. The alternative is that I drive all the way into NYC... something I really do not want to do. Or Amtrak from Boston... more expensive. So yea, thoughts are appreciated.

Vistausss Posted November 8, 2013 Share #3 Posted November 8, 2013 You also need to count in the travel time. It's not like you're in NYC in a flash. NH->NYC is quite a stretch, even with MNRR. With an express train it would be faster but I'm not sure if there's any express trains on weekends on the NH. Alternatively, you could take Amtrak from NH to NYC. Much faster and from NH it's not that much more expensive on the 8:09AM 143 Northeast Regional compared to MNRR.
Amtrak7 Posted November 8, 2013 Share #4 Posted November 8, 2013 The fastest weekend travel time on a normally scheduled weekend train is 1.75 hours. During the holiday season (next weekend through Jan 5) a few super express westbound trains run on weekends that take 95 minutes, stopping only at West Haven and Bridgeport. That's fewer stops and less time than any rush hour train.
