GojiMet86 Posted January 4, 2016 Share #1 Posted January 4, 2016 I went to Guatemala for the first time in 15 years over the summer of 2015. I had a chance to check out the transportation, and surprise surprise, it's downright terrible. Say what you want about the quality of today's buses, but they pale in comparison to the equipment run in Guatemala. Violence is pretty high, and buses are very big targets for gangs and extortion schemes. One weeks in and 3 bus drivers had been killed. But the bus systems been improving slightly over the last couple of years with two comprehensive systems called TransUrbano and TransMetro, which is an actual BRT, not some pussy SBS, and which has military and police staff at each stop and bus. The red buses are the most common but the most dangerous, so if you ever decide to visit Guatemala, don't go near them. They are comprised of former Bluebird school buses, Guatemala's own Rosmo, the Mexican Masa and Brazil's Caio. They're pretty chaotic as well. Rollsigns don't exist on them, destinations and routes are just painted on the windshield. Former Greyhound buses are still alive and kicking. The train system has been dead for 8 years, but there's a pretty kick-ass museum in Plaza Barrios. The government has been talking lately about starting the system up again for 2016.
