As a transplant, I always thought it weird that I never saw state police patrolling highways in the city. In California, Highway Patrol on city streets ticketing is extremely common - it's entirely possible to get tickets from CHP and local police back to back (not so much with sheriff's departments - they tend to not write them).

Speaking of highway patrol, why is there so many state troopers now? They are on the highways, bridges, tunnels. Did they merge companies with MTA Bridges and tunnels? I rarely see the latter now.
