A breaking news story. A Metro North track worker was killed tonight 1/9/09 on the New Haven line near the Rye, NY station. His death caused extensive delays at the height of the evening rush hour. Here joint news story from the Associated Press and WABC-TV.

RYE, NY January 9, 2009 (WABC-TV & Associated Press News Wires) -- A Metro North track worker was struck and killed by a train on Friday night.

The accident happened a half-mile west of the Rye train station near the CT state border, just after 7:00 p.m.

The worker was struck by a Metro North train traveling from Grand Central to New Haven. No immedate reason given on what caused the accident as an invegestation is ongoing.

The man's identity was not immediately released. Power was turned off to all four tracks to allow emergency personnel to reach the scene.

Metro North spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said at least a dozen New Haven line trains were held at the nearest stations, affecting an estimated 12,000 commuters.

Some 'limited service' resumed on the New Haven line through Rye after 8:30 p.m. Metro North was able to clear one of the four tracks. It's handling train traffic in both directions, but New Haven-bound trains are getting the priority considering rush hour service was affected. Delays of up to one hour or more were expected on Metro North New Haven line and Amtrak's Northeast coordior line between Boston and New York.

Five Amtrak trains between New York-Penn Station and New Haven have been halted as well. There was no immedate word as of 9pm Friday if and when those train would resume service.

:D:(B):confused::cry:

Next time that train passes, say monday, on the same scheduled time, perhaps it should have some kinda ribbon, black something on it etc.

As a person who knows track workers and other rail employees, this is a huge deal to those working with the victim.

My girlfriend's dad used to work for penn central, then conrail etc, and just from the tone of his voice talking bout stuff, you can really tell it's hard for them to deal with this. Rail workers are like family.

Would be nice for all passengers to be extra kind for the next few weeks eh? *hint hint*
