Harry Posted October 8, 2014 Share #1 Posted October 8, 2014 At its first board meeting since Amtrak released a grim report detailing the post-Sandy conditions of its tunnels, New Jersey Transit officials tried to manage agita about how future tunnel closures might affect commutes. "We just got the report also," said Ronnie Hakim, NJ Transit's executive director. "We will obviously be having discussions with Amtrak about any scheduled work." The engineering report calls for closing the damaged tunnels, one at a time, for extensive repairs. Amtrak says it's preparing to close one of the East River tunnels as early as 2016, but won't close the Hudson River tunnels until a new tunnel is built. (That new tunnel is known as the Gateway Project, and Amtrak hopes to build it in the next decade.)Read more: Source

realizm Posted October 9, 2014 Share #3 Posted October 9, 2014 The corrosion on those Houdson tubes is massive, with corroded sections going as deep as a black hole in space or something. They could not do the needed repairs since they cannot shut down a critical Amtrak link into NYC. Saltwater corrosion is something if not remedied will eat through metal and concrete to the point of no return. They got so desperate they even asked the MTA to reconsider the to Secaucus NJ. But dealing with the State of New Jersey comes as a liability as Gov. Christie has shown by his haphazard way of dealing with transit needs. They need to start the Gateway project ASAP. Thats a given, lets hope they dont screw this up. NJT lost millions as it is with the cancellation of the ARC.
