  1. Random thought:

Have you guys ever noticed how a crowded train sounds quieter than an empty train from the inside? I'm pretty sure that it's true. I'm guessing that the people's bodies inside the train absorb the sound waves.

I think it may be that people are feeling awakward crowded next to complete strangers and would prefer not to speak. That's how I feel during the rush hour in the subway.

  2. My random thoughts:

R68A #5038 has a poster advertising the Court Square and Jay Street-MetroTech transfer, but it shows an orange (R).

On the (B) local in Brooklyn today, a lady who was to slow to decide and get off at Sheepshead Bay got her leg caught in the door, and scolded by the conductor.

  3. It's pointless because the (A)(C) travel time is roughly the same between Hoyt st and 59 st. (A) only skips Spring st, 23 st, and 50 st but there are local express stops between these stations like West 4 st, 14 st, 34 st,42 st. The (A) would only save you 1 minute when it leaves 59st the (C) would arrive the station.

Interesting perspective. As for my '93 subway map, I'm considering placing it under lock and key, along with my '06 Brooklyn bus map.

  4. Surprised no one mentioned this, On the Express stretch between Church avenue and Newkirk Plaza , the 160s can hit up to 53 mph before flying into the station. Not sure about the 68s but they can hit up the mid 40s in that section.

yeah, that's true. I remember on a (Q) G.O. train, it hit about 54 mph between Kings Hwy and Newkirk Plz.

  5. A random thought:

Yesterday I acquired a June 1993 (MTA) map showing the Broadway BMT side of the bridge closed, the (B) to 168th Street, a blue (S), a <A>, (B)(Q) to 21st Street-Queensbridge, (G) to Forest Hills and Queens Plaza, the (1)(9), and the Cortlandt Street (1)(9) station open. And that was all in one sentence. ;):)

If you're riding between Hoyt–Schermerhorn Streets and 59 St-Columbus Circle uptown, then it's pointless to ride the (A).

But why? The (A) 8th Avenue express is a lot faster than the (C).

  6. Wow, I've seen the tracks on Google Earth and I always thought it would be fast, but I had no idea that it would be THAT fast.

Nobody says much of the southbound Lexington Av Express from 125 to 86 St. I know that n/b can reach 49 MPH, but this s/b R142A reaches 47-48, I think: (go to 4:45 for the fast part)

Wrong video, man! This is the 00:27 one!

  7. Actually, the R160s are designed for up to 55 mph. I think once I was on one that reached 56, but I don't recall the line or area.

Go PM him, or if you don't have that little envelope icon at the top of any page, I could always do it for you upon request.

  8. Holy crap, I clicked on the link of Q23's signature and I get this:

    And it goes on.

  9. Sickest thing I heard/saw today as I was walking on Jamaica near Crescent, a (Z) T/O rounds the entire curve entering Cypress Hills on the switch power notch settings alone. Never heard the first tone of Alstom's propulsion go on for so long... Wonder if the T/O was young... Pretty sure most old timers wouldn't have the patience for that...

I hate the R160A propulsion.WHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR....who the hell could stand that for an hour in a tiny cab. I bet quite a few Eastern Division T/O's have invested in a pair of quality earplugs.

  10. Because of a police investigation, Union Square (4)(5)(6)(N)(Q)(R) is impassable. The (L) is unaffected, but must bypass the station.

    (4) 2 Sections: Nevins Street-New Lots Avenue and Woodlawn to GC-42

    (5) Dyre Shuttle

    (6) 125-Pelham

    (N) 2 Sections: CI-Atlantic-Pacific and Astoria-TSQ

    (Q) 2 Sections: CI-Prospect Park and Astoria-TSQ

    (R) Via 6 Avenue

  11. What's the point of a repeated signals? Why not just have that one signal on the left of the blind curve? Is there a rule or regulation stating there must always be a right-sided signal present?

The actual signal has to be placed at a specific point, let me explain.

Signals on the NYC subway are placed at track joints. The tracks themselves are electrified. When a train passes over an electrically insulated joint, it jumps the electricity onto the next sector of track, thus turning the signal red. The point of repeater signals is that the real signal has to be placed at the track joint, and a train opertator can't see the signal until almost atop of it, a spot where one cannot stop a train should the signal be red, leading to many train operators to being tripped and written up wrongly. The repeater signal is placed before the real signal and gives the train operator time to take appropriate actions for the signal.

  12. I didn't mean that. Where the rollsign was supposed to be there was just glass. There wasn't that (S) sign that's used. Just glass. I could tell because I saw the marking where it used to be. Maybe the rollsign tore and they took it out for repair and put the car back in service.

  13. I'm designing a new type of bridge in my engineering/lunchtime notebook.

Also, 5th grade gets a senior trip to Adventureland on June 13! We go from 8:00 to 4:30.(Includes sitting in a boiling hot school bus in the middle of 495 Interstate for 11/2 hours.)
