  1. Major changes coming to bus orders. We will get more into the details later this evening.

40 foot orders: MTA has decided to scrap the new RFP and reautorize the options for the last LFS and XD40 orders.

274 Novas for Queens and the Bronx. Jamaica will become 100% LFS, all other bus models will be shipped out.

371 XD40's for Brooklyn and Stengel.... Quill may get a piece of the pie, however that is not yet confirmed.

    26 XD40's with options for 14 more, and 53 XD60's for MTABC.

As for Hybrids, Nova has officially protested the sole award of XDE40's and XDE60's. In light of that MTA has decided for the first time in decades to take this into consideration. The final decision was to authorize a new RFP for 80 40 footers and 10 artics. The order could also be split. It will also become the newest segment in the 90 unit New Bus Qualification program as MTA has specified they want to evaluate the Allison EP Hybrid system for multiple reasons.

As far as the Bronx XD60's go, the final transfer location(s) have not yet been confirmed to me by the MTA. As of right now both EN and FB are being evaluated for new buses, used buses, and/or a mix of both. As the 6000's continue to roll in some final decisions will be made.

I would like to see some of the mix breed of XDs & XDEs in the mix. What about the XEs for the B42 & M42. Will the MTA look into NF's different models for both routes? Or may have Manhattanville get XDH or some new design from NF that would be exclusive to them.

  2. Honestly in my true opinion. We can speculate the outcome to what moves will take place. However, the (MTA) has the final say to what moves will happen.

What I would like to take place is possibly part of the LFSA order should come to Brooklyn for the B46 local since KB and GH have the most of the order. I believe it's 92 buses for this order. But due to maintenance issues it's strickly Manhattan and Bronx order.

And it IS a 92 order

  3. Ok two things: ENY sent their Novas 8094-8119 to JA and 8120-8123 to Charleston. So im guessing that they are in line to receive the first option of XDs when they come in, 50+ to replace their RTS buses, followed by Flatbush, UP, and FP. They could transfer some of their O7s to MTABC from FLA & FP since GA is getting XD60s. As for NovaBus LFS, good for MJQ in Manhattan, JA gets an additional, QV can use some more, and The Bronx can get 25 extras for KB & GH. Both orders should have outlets and WIFI installed, right?

  4. NICE doesn't know what to do with themselves these days since the MTA sold the old LIB to Nassau. Before they were NICE, the people of Nassau county refused to fork the funds that was to keep the services under the MTA for another 2-3 years. Because of no funds from LIB, 100 NYCT bus routes was cut. 1/4 of them since have been restored since LIB disbanded in 2012. People just got tired and said "let us find another way to get somewhere instead of taking the bus which is $2.75. Damn!

  5. I see the MTA is going for Allison hybrids. Any reason for leaving BAE? King County Metro out here got XDE60s with the BAE E-series hybrid system and they are spectacular. They cruise at highway speeds with the engine idling and in general are much quieter and smoother than anything BAE or Allison previously put out. Great pull, too, handle some of the crazy hills out here as well as the XT40s and XT60s. Metro stuck with Allison for over a decade (except the Orions, obviously) before going BAE with their latest orders of XDE35/40/60s.

So my guess is that Allisons are better than BAEs If NYC gets dominated by NFs, Ill be damned, You know that may happen with just 10% BYDs for the B/M42s and 30% of Novas.

(How do I get a destination sign)

  6. The stupid thing just deleted my work. I'll just list the changes I would make and provide the explanations later.

    S40/S90: Unchanged

S42: Weekend service restored. Route combined with S54 via Lafayette-Henderson-Broadway, providing Westerleigh with easier access to St. George.

On southern end, Giffords Lane service replaced by S79A. Service is rerouted to New Dorp SIR station (more commercial area could lead to higher ridership). On the weekends, service is extended to cover the S76 route.

S44/S94: If buses are deadheading to the Yukon Depot anyway (I don't know whether they go back to St. George, or if they're based out of Castleton), the S44 short-turns in the PM rush would be extended to the SI Mall via Post Avenue-Port Richmond Avenue-Walker Street-Morningstar Road-MLK Expressway (stop at CSI), and then take Victory Blvd to Richmond Avenue. Provides faster service for CSI students/

S46/S96: S96 service expanded to run all day (6:00AM - 7:00PM eastbound and 7:00AM - 10:00PM westbound). Accomplished by reducing S46 service to 15 minute headways and having the S96 run every 30 minutes off-peak (20 minutes reverse-peak).

S48/S98: S98 service expanded to run 24/7 to Newark Airport (local stops overnight). Service would run every 30 minutes to Arlington and 30 minutes to Newark Airport off-peak and reverse-peak on weekdays and possibly Saturdays. During rush hour, service runs more frequently to Arlington than Newark Airport.

    S51: No change.

S52: Extended to Richmond Road via Seaview Avenue to provide South Beach riders for another way to make connections besides the S51.

S53: S83 limited added, running limited all the way to Port Richmond. Service on the S53 is reduced to provide resources for this. S83 buses would bypass McClean Avenue and instead take the S79 route after Hylan & Clove. No Sunday service.

    S54: See S42.

S55: Rerouted to take Bloomingdale Road-Englewood Avenue-Bricktown Mall and then serve the Perth Amboy train station. S82 covers Bloomingdale Road.

S56: No change. Maybe in a desperate attempt to get more riders, it could be extended to Seaview Hospital to provide riders from the SI Mall area with an easier ride.

    S57: No change.

    S59: No change.

    S61: No change.

S62: Saturday short-turns to CSI converted to S93 runs. Midday service runs every 15 minutes consistently, and midday S93 service is added.

Rush hour service eliminated and replaced with S67 service. Victory Blvd has the S92 and S93, but Westerleigh only has the S57, which doesn't go to St. George or Brooklyn, S92s might be marginally more crowded, but not by much. The S62 is really for riders east of Jewett Avenue anyway.

S66: Weekend service restored, but the hours are the same as the former S60.

    S67: Restored. See S62.

S74/S84: I'm debating on what to do with the route on the South Shore. Without the Arthur Kill Correctional Facility, there's really nothing to serve in that area, but there are some houses south of Sharrotts Road, plus the Tides development, so I don't know. Maybe it could take Bloomingdale Road-Englewood Avenue and serve the Bricktown Mall, and then go out and take Arthur Kill Road to Sharrotts Road, but then the problem becomes finding a place to turn around. If the community doesn't want buses running down the side streets, then there's no choice but to just have it terminate at the Bricktown Mall.

    S76: No change.

    S78: No change.

S79: Would become a full-time limited (Except maybe during the evening hours, when the locals don't run too frequently). A new S79A is introduced, which would run as a local every 30 minutes, 7 days a week (I guess from 6AM to 10PM, or whatever sounds good). It would serve Giffords Lane instead of Richmond Avenue, providing Great Kills with access to both the SI Mall, and shopping along Hylan Blvd.

S82: New route created from Tottenville to Newark Airport via Bayonne. It would take the path I outlined (pretty much following the proposed path of the proposed West Shore Light Rail Line, though it would usually take the service road where possible. It would provide 7-day access to Bayonne (running every 40 minutes off-peak), and from there, it would take JFK Blvd to I-78 and then go to Newark Airport, providing both SI and Bayonne residents with a one-seat ride to Newark Airport (if you want, it could run limited down JFK Blvd). It would fill in a few service gaps on SI in the process.

S93: Midday and Saturday service added. See S62.

Also, buses near the SI Mall would be rerouted to all use the same street, whether it's Marsh Avenue, or the "back part" of Ring Road.

How far is the gap between the S42 & S54? As for the S82, you can make that all limited service, with the creation of the S72 local. Both routes will operate out of Meredith to ease the overcrowding on CH, CA & YU. Meredith can accomondate at least 20-25 standard buses for the S72/82.

    Depots (Major Projects Only)

Starting January 2015, several bus depots in all 5 boroughs had begun or continued in-house rehabs to modernize the facilities, increase productivity, and lower costs.

East New York - Currently in the planning stage is a brand new state-of-the-art facility for the merged bus operations of NYCTA and MTABC. The new building will be located and constructed at the East New York Bus Depot site, which currently serves as MTA's Surface Transit Operations Headquarters. This facility will feature brand new bus dispatch capabilities which will be merged with MTABC, as all buses across the fleet will have their radios replaced for one common system. This will begin the much awaited official merger of New York City Transit's TA and OA divisions with that of MTA Bus Company. All buses will also have their fare-boxes replaced for units that will be common to both Transit and Bus Co.

Jamaica - Construction of the new Jamaica Depot is now in the first phase of planning. These discussions include the finalization of the location, the acquisition of property, site preparation, and the overall design of the new depot. The official project completion date is not known as the planning has just begun. It is now being said that the existing depot will be demolished, and a new expanded building will be replaced in the current location along with newly purchased property adjacent to lot to facilitate expansion

Mother Clara Hale - The new Mother Clara Hale depot re-opened as a Manhattan Division facility. It is a state of the art depot which currently operates the M1, M7, M15SBS, and M35 bus routes.

ok, so LGA wasn't getting artics after all. All the hoopla and instead of the 128 order, it just went to the normal 75. As for the TA version, I am glad with the numbering system because I was just about to say Why go after 5439-56xx whereas you have buses already in the 5510-5769 series that has to be scrapped (minus the 4 that is already retired). 5987-6125 gives it a large chance that we will see the artics in the 6000s finally. After all, the 5000 series will be mixed with Novas and XDs

Until the NYCDOT & NYMTA comes up with a solution on what they are going to do about this Woodhaven Blvd SBS, Im not buying it for LGA to get artics. They first must "fix" Northeastern Queens first in which im in if Q25 gets SBS, then CP should get artics, But what the MTA should do in the addition to the 110 XN60 potential order, add 60 more to support the growing artics in WF, suppliment some C40LFs in CP for Artics on the Q25 and have it ready for the SBS in the future. As for WF & Gleason, mix it up for JG's B35 (at least 25-30) and WF's Bx15, Bx19, and Im picking Bx36, as well as a potential Bx6 SBS (58 regs/20 SBS) replacing all Diesel operated NF D60 buses and transferring Nova LFSAs to GH & KB.

  8. For those that have been wondering why there have been no recent updates, it's because things have been changing on a constant basis, and I wanted to wait until I had all the puzzle pieces before I made a major update. So here we go!

A.) The next order for NFI and Nova Option 40 foot buses has officially been put on hold for several reasons. If you all remember when the contract first came out, MTA initially said they would likely place an order for options with delivery in the second quarter of 2016. It is now June, which means it is the last month of the quarter, and as of today, MTA doesn't plan on putting them on the books at the next board meeting. Well why is that??

B.) Anyone been wondering why on Earth Quill has 93/94/9500 series buses? or why ENY lost all it's RTS buses, then got some back? Remember about 6 months ago I said the ish was gonna hit the fan with the RTS fleet, and it would get interesting?? Well guess what people. The MTA has decided to place certain RTS buses all over the city (with the exception of SI) in order to immediately re-evaluate the entire fleet. So that means we just pushed the final retirement date further into 2019. If the evaluation overall is in favor of the RTS, we rock out through 2020. If not, MTA will issue a "Notice to Proceed" to both NFI and Nova for addition options soon. However, the options have inevitably been pushed back anyway as the contracts need to be amended a bit to allow for WiFi and USB ports. Not only that, but the finalized 40 foot scheme has to be tested out on a bus of each model before its approved.  In the meanwhile, EC keeps its 99 Nova's, and this no longer appears to be a temporary assignment. I expect 3 more to head up there inevitably to replace those Orion V's. As older RTS buses are retired, about 70% of the fleet are pounding the pavement daily with hardly an issue at all. The older 30% are going to have to go soon, and this is what the MTA is focusing on in this area. When do we say today is the day...... Retirement has been extended at least 3 times now and the newest buses will likely out last a few of the first OG hybrids, and all of the OG CNG's.

C.) MTA's new immediate focus is articulated buses. Where and how many are the questions. 139 XD60's and 92 Nova's have been inked, and be on the lookout for 110 XN60's. The details are near complete, and the order will be on the books publicly soon. I am hearing the order could have options, which would mean the ONLY place we could fit them are Spring Creek and College Point.   MTA is also looking into when the next 29 and 24 buses respectively should be ordered for MTA bus. Because nothing is official, there is room to play. The new strategy going forward is to order enough artics to cover all basis. That way, while the MTA evaluates where the remaining RTS, and displaced hybrids go, they still have 690 options available to cover the other end at any time.

D.) Speaking of all this artics, the 60 foot BYD electric bus will return with a few modifications, and the MTA will go from there with an evaluation. MTA is keeping the lid on this one, but they are in the wings evaluating everyones electric offerings. I expect to see more pop up on the property over the next 24-36 months.

E.) Hybrids. There are currently 2 qualified builders, yet only 1 qualified powertrain. As we go forward in the future the MTA will evaluate the new BAE and Allison systems extensively. Unless something changes, all of the 75 new hybrids will go to Manhattanville.

F.) WiFi and outlets. By the end of 2017, 18 buses in Manhattan, 70 in Brooklyn, 75 in Queens, and 209 buses in the Bronx will have the new features. This will be a combination of both new buses, and retrofitted buses. If MTA decides to confirm 40 options and up to 53 more XD60's, these numbers will increase.

Thats definitely true for most part, and I would definitely agree for drivers new to articulated buses, but I could make that turn with no problem, and not much set-up needed at all.... At 44 inches, the XD actually has a slightly tighter turning radius than the Nova's 44.8 inches. And they still both stretch a bit more than that before they lock up.  ;)

you forgot about West Farms with that 110 XN60s that's coming in. WF has Bx19 & shares Bx15 with KB, and can see one soon on the Bx6 if the route gets SBS. CP has been talked about getting artics since they are getting some for the potential Q25 SBS. Expect C40LF transfers when 3 depots (JG, WF & CP) get the delivery of the XNs (no matter what type)

there is no way that the mta wants the q65 to become artics. The q65 bus makes to many turns and the streets that it goes down is narrow.

And it also goes up that big hill from hillside ave to highland ave. The q25 bus i have no problem with its just the q65.

I agree with you on the Q65. Artics are slated for the Q25

  9. What do you all think about the M5 bus split?

The M5 is the worst route as in OTP, so splitting the M5, turning it on 37 & the bottom half, renaming it as M55, will run to 38th St, both buses will connect at 37th & 38th Sts on 6th & 5th respectively. So I say go ahead to make the M5 better, and have the M55 operate as a Quill

  10. I have something to say about this Bus Co/NYCT merger: There are a couple of things i really like to see after they have merged:

    1.  there are 28 depots. Some depots close to another can close (Baisley Park for one thing. Jamaica can take over BP's routes). CP can finally be converted to Express only routes while all local routes get transferred to nearby CS.

    2. Instead of using prefixes, go with route numbering system: 1-218 in Manhattan and the Bronx to Manhattan , 220-290 in the Bronx only , 300-399 in Brooklyn, 400-539 in Queens, 540-599 in Staten Island and 850-989 to Express. 600 series can be used for sporting events and specials. 700 for SBS routes, maybe.

    3. Split depot buses with some of the busiest routes

  11. I have just gotten off the M21, and let me tell you, it was very dissapointing, For starters I had to wait twenty minutes for one. In my eyes thats just ridicuolus. One, I couldv'e walked and it would take the same amount of time. Two, this is the Houston St Crosstown. People completely unfamiliar with NYC or MTA, are going to take this bus. If they see it takes that long, they will get steered away from public transit. In addition, Weekday only service? I can tell you one thing for sure. There are bars in this area. People are more likely to drink (And get drunk and take MTA) on a Saturday, than a Wensday, which brings me to my next point. Service ends at 10 PM. As I said before, based on the area, this route can get alot of riders past 10 PM.

Until service is improved the M21 will continue to get 3-4 riders a bus, and will be a waste of the MTA's money. So, overall what i'm trying to say is, they need to improve the route, or cut it entirely.

The M21 was little used before it went true Houston Street X-town. the true route was first talked about in 1991 but protesters went against that because of the double fare structure was costing riders too much going up to Bellevue Hospital, in which this route is heavily depended on. The M21 currently operates 7 days a week
