I think it's easier for everyone at this point to see the cracks in the wall this plan presents. It'll be costly, delayed, little planned and frankly seems more of a vanity project with how few it may benefit. I initially supported this plan but no longer do so, and with the delay continuing on, it seems to a rough road to get the portion back into service. I actually contacted an advocate for this plan in the Rockaway's (Stacy Pheffer Amato) and have currently received no email back. We'll have to wait and see...

They are assigned as Far Rockaway depot routes, but their fleet is Orion VIIs from JFK, 52 units rotated.

I see, I do recall the Orion VII's sent on both routes once having the Far Rockaway badges on them, though I do suppose it makes more sense in it's current state.

I think that the interests of the general rider trump that of some rail fan whining about the good old days of R32s and Redbirds. Most people don't like wallowing in dirt and grime and rats.

The skylights were closed because they're in Jamaica. Contrary to what the developers would like you to believe, Jamaica and Downtown Manhattan don't have all that much in common. It's right under city government, for Christ's sake.

Got it, didn't think of location in my original thoughts. I'm also presuming the station will have to be renovated as well for this to occur; since skylights will look odd under the existing structure for me personally and cost more money to build, since I originally thought otherwise for some reason.

Where exactly is the Chambers St stop located? It would look really nice with a skylight.

It would, though it may take away the decaying aspect some people like about it in it's current form. Also, what about graffiti artists and vandals? They'll find a way to ruin it even if good security is implemented. Isn't that one of the reasons Jamaica Van Wyck (E) had it's ones closed for good?

they remove a place for people to feasibly sit or lie down for hours at a time.

I guess, but I don't see a difference between these leaning benches and regular subway benches in terms of comfort. "feasibly" I don't think anybody really could be sleeping on a regular subway bench for "hours" at a time. If anything, it (standing benches) could push more of these people on trains if done system-wide. The boxy wooden design, and big barriers between each seat on regular benches already does a good job at preventing homeless from sleeping on it.

The standing benches may remove this place you're describing by just a bit, but when considering the cost of regular seating for everybody else, I don't know about that...

I've seen them in other cities, maybe even in Europe, if I recall. Anyway, they are more for leaning against than standing. They take up less platform space, for one thing. Sometimes, you just want to lean on something clean.

They seem like a novelty item to me, just there to look "cool" and "modern" in my view. I've never seen it used any time i''ve visited an ESI station either. Also, it isn't exactly meant to repel any homeless populations, as the NY1 article mentioned, though I struggle to see other uses and reasons for it.

I've never seen that sign either, they're probably trying it out or something. Pretty cool in my opinion, though what would be cooler is if they programmed arrows or text on the screen to point on the train that you shouldn't board. For improved communication to those who have never been on the subway before (especially along Archer where this photo was taken). Maybe in place or right next to the "1." and "2." on the screen

On a side note. The 6th Avenue shutdown G.O. makes little sense to me. If their goal is to modernize signals, then why not shut down the entire corridor for about 8-9 months or a year to do all of this work?

Not a sixth avenue rider whatsoever, but i'd imagine this method would see more short term costs, that the people and the MTA would have to deal with. In this current state, they probably don't want to waste more resources on such a plan that already works ok when stretched out longer, and is more convenient for riders. Even if I do feel your idea  is pretty sensible.

  9. I saw an R42 signed up as an H (but likely not in service) in the Rockaways earlier today. The train was approaching B105 st station bound for 116 when I saw it. And I also saw it go in the opposite direction some time later. Any reason for this? Is it a possibility the R42’s will go to the A seeing the J line will be all NTT? Anyways, I wish I got a photo, but I actually saw this out of my schools window lol.

NICE's (lack of) quality service means you spend more time in that hellhole than you need to.

It's little surprise at this point considering Nassau County itself is incredibly car focused, most treat the bus like plague over there and care less if it's passengers get less. Sad since I do remember the bus service being quite a lot better over there than it is now, and Hempstead TS may have been better as well (though I never went there until lately).

I'd personally give Byford some more time to improve - I don't expect the bureaucracy to be easy to overcome.

However, if he has been on the job for lets say more than a year and a half (next summer) and we don't see any improvements, I would grow skeptical and believe that he has either submitted to politics or is trapped by it.

He certainly has potential to make major contributions to the subway system if done right (Ex. Fast Forward). And the dedication he has for the system isn't to be scoffed at either. So im certainly hoping for the best from him, though after seeing him handle the SIM buses on Staten Island, I do have some respectful skepticism for him too, even if he is by definition an exemplary transit president.

Going back to the subway and a prior point I made, I don't expect the system to suddenly turn into one like MTR's overnight (doesn't even need to). But what I want to see is the system showing signs of being able to keep up. From the factors of increasing ridership and crowds, rising fares, cleanliness and service. From what I've seen this year, im not exactly sure our system can keep up and maintain itself with the times if it keeps improving at this current rate. It's a lot to ask for and it wont come without troubles, but it by no means is impossible either.

For 6 billion in another US city we could get to Claremont, and in a normal country we could get to Fordham Plaza. Unfortunately I don't see any reduction in costs unless Molinaro is elected, which has a rather low chance of happening, and even with that I wouldn't expect more than a 5-10% decrease in costs at best because of politics.

Yup, sadly I don't see this project staying within or meeting budget under Cuomo's godforsaken reign; I feel that other factors like potential economic struggles (say for instance) will play a larger role than politics since it seems to have been rather unaffecting during phase 1 IIRC, compared to other projects like Fulton St.. About the 6 billion dollar point  you brought up however, it is extreme, but expected since you have to realize this city is one of the most expensive to build in, costs will always be higher than perceived since New York isn't cheap. A far bigger concern for me is the amount of benefits we'll receive by the time the it opens (a long time away). With the growth of our system already steadily rising, it might barely make a difference in the issue of crowds and what not by then.

Lately, I feel like the subway has gotten a lot better. I know that everyone might not agree but to a certain extent, most operators I feel are hauling ass once again especially on express runs. Idk if I get lucky with operators or they're actually removing useless timers such as the one at 74th st on the (7). Dispatch is a whole nother story because when you see multiple trains approaching the terminal, how do you not have the common sense to start sending some trains out?? The subway has improved a tiny bit IMO, though there are still lots of problems that need to be addressed like flooding.

Changes have been slow in my opinion from the slightly hyperbolic "State Of Emergency" Cuomo declared last year. While the agency is picking itself up for once (i've seen less trash, delays seem to be down, communication is better), crowding still is an issue, trains are still greatly unreliable for many and fares keep going up for little justified service.  It's a good start in my book, though more improvements in the system will be needed for it to handle future generations.

As for the Q113/114 SBS plan, it'll help those in the Rockaway such as @EphraimB so I support it. These are my overall thoughts (so far)

    My opinion:

Im not so sure about a Q113/114 SBS. I don't know if residents on Guy Brewer. want to give up parking spaces for bus lanes since many parts of the Brewer don't have a lot of driving lanes (especially in Southern Queens, where a great number of people drive). The plan may also cripple local bus service if done, specifically on the Q111 and maybe the Q114 (this has happened to prior SBS routes). And I don't really see how it may be able to speed up other sections of the route beyond Guy Brewer, though i'll look into that further later on. I feel the route needs more buses that are better managed, some times I've waited over 20 minutes late for a Q113 or Q114 that already has lackluster headway's to begin with. I'll say it's not the easiest thing to do considering the traffic both routes run through (and the $$$), but it seems more logical and benefical to me than putting SBS on the route, only to cripple local service many need later on.

I get it..Its gottin to the point (with me anyway) if im waiting for an (A) anywhere along 8av/fulton/cpw if the (C) shows 1st i just board it...Lately depending on ur destination locals beat expresses by a mile

Often times, that's no joke either. Literally the other day both an (A) and (C) train were at 42nd street, so I decided to take the (A). Turns out the (A) became delayed in Manhattan and Brooklyn as usual, and I didn't see that (C) again until the (A) passed Shepherd Avenue where the (C) already went to Euclid and was running in the opposite direction (I kid you not!). Only in New York City lol...

Goes to show that doing these stations on the cheap doesn't solve much, I feel it actually almost creates a mirage instead that the MTA continually brags about. This leaking certainly is minor in a way, though generally, im sure many of these new ESI stations won't last as long as their older brothers they're replacing under this current state. Smh...

Not to sound impatient, but it's been months since delivery started and the shutdown is only a half year away. When the hell is the MTA going to start rearranging the fleet or at least release a solid plan? Or are they waiting for the last minute as usual so they can screw everything up in typical fashion?

Some trains are already being arranged, like the R160 (C)'s going to the (J). And currently, im sure they already have a plan as to where there going to go, and a plan of rearranging the fleet before the shutdown. If so, there probably keeping it isolated since changes happen, and the public really can't influence the matters that much, nor care about which specific NTT or SMEE is going to a line. If your latter point is true, the MTA could waiting until the last minute since Bombardier hasn't delivered all the sets yet and the agency still is testing them. Just my (mostly unproven) thoughts.

I must say that I'm impressed when it comes to boarding. If fare evasion wasn't an issue and if all buses had some sort of security system (aside from cameras) installed, then most/every bus could be SBS, there by eliminating the title

That's the one good thing I really like about the Q53 and Q52 SBS (and most SBS routes in general). Pay before boarding really helps speed up the buses during school and rush hours (at least from where I live in the Rockaway's). The reason every bus can't be SBS is since many routes don't warrant the ridership for bus lanes, staff to check for fare evasion, pay before boarding, not to mention the MTA's budget.

What's going to happen with those 1996 RTS that are being stored at LGA?

Aren't they being (or already are) retired? I'd assume they'll be scrapped or moved again soon? Just my opinion.

They should convert the street from two-way to one way Northbound from Empire Blvd to at least Fulton Street to make NB traffic on Utica Avenue faster. Southbound B17 and B46 SBS would use Schenectady Avenue instead and access would not be lost since there is an entrance to the Utica Avenue station at Schenectady Avenue.

Adding more lanes to Utica doesn't make a difference in my opinion, it'll only take a few months or so for car demand to meet back up over the supply. And next thing you know, traffic again just like before. More lanes always creates more traffic, that's not how you solve this type of issue.

Is the (7) extension to Secaucus still up for discussion?

Not currently by the members of this forum, of whom a decent amount question the idea of the (7) train going to NJ in the first place, let alone the costs that could arguably go towards something more important.

Making the switch over to the Red OnePlus 6 in a week or two....the 6T won't have a headphone jack, which is a huge dealbreaker to me.

Saddens me that there are less options for phones these days without headphone jacks. Sooner or later, all of them wont have it, it's why im holding onto my iphone 6s at this point. My sister has the iphone 8 and she has no other real option but to use wireless headphones, which I (and she) currently despises...
