FWIW, his coms director says it won’t preclude restoring rail onto the branch and that they’re working with the MTA, but I want to see a concrete plan for that, before I fully believe him.

I call BS to that statement, especially after looking at the Rendering's for the first Phase of the Queenway Project. If you look here, you can see that it hinders any possibility for any rail reactivation: https://dlandstudio.com/The-QueensWay-Met-Hub-NY

@BreeddekalbL IDK why I can't quote you for some reason, but the Queenslink team put up a petition on their website to keep the Rail Proposal alive: https://thequeenslink.org/

In like 2006 I rode an R68 (B) train that had its lights off underground. Double whammy as it was a rare ride on an R68 (B) (was rare for that time period as R40s dominated the line at the time) and the lights was off!

Reminds me of the one time I saw an NIS 160 with its lights off while I was doing some training in my flagging class, and that wasn't even that long ago.

Personally, when it comes to the MTA and PSDs, it just sounds like Damage Control, a PR stunt to quiet the public. Times Square on the (7), 14 St-Union Square on the (L), and JFK Airport on the (E) were supposed to get PSDs, but they still haven't put them in yet. They are very slow when something needs to be done, but somehow quick for other things that aren't necessary.

Not a fan of adding PSD's in NYCT but I do wish to see how they'd look. Also it was 3rd Avenue on the (L) that was included in the Pilot, not Union Square

Long overdue. I only wear a mask now on the express bus, otherwise, nowhere else.

Same. Although the only reason I do is because IDK how the B/O will react to being maskless cause I had a QM42 B/O ask me to put on a mask one time when going home from the city, thankfully I had one on me at the time.

ALBANY, N.Y. —- New Yorkers are no longer required, but still encouraged, to wear masks on subway trains, correctional facilities, detention centers and homeless shelters, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday.

Key context: The ending of the state’s facial covering requirement for public transportation and certain congregant settings — some of the last pandemic-era restrictions still in place in the state — comes amid a decline in Covid-19 cases and as the Hochul administration looks to lure more New Yorkers and visitors back to New York City.

The transit mask mandate was one of the last ones in the nation.

Masks, however, must still be worn in health care settings and adult care facilities, including nursing homes. Signs will be posted in transit centers to encourage mask use, but also note they are optional.

What they said: “We have to restore some normalcy to our lives,” Hochul announced during a late-morning event in New York City. “Starting today, the Department of Health will be issuing new guidance regarding masks based on the CDC guidance. Masks will be optional.”

The governor said the decision to lift the mask mandate was based on the stabilization of Covid rates in the state. Health Commissioner Mary Bassett added that nursing homes and health care facilities are still requiring facial coverings due to the risks of Covid spread in such settings.

“This is to protect everyone in a health care facility, where we know there will be people infected,” she said. “The same goes for nursing homes.”

Background: The announcement came just one day after Hochul said her administration was considering whether to end the public transportation facial covering requirement. “We’ll be talking about making some announcements on that very shortly,” she told reporters at Penn Station Tuesday when asked if she was considering spiking the mandate.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority still required masks to be worn at indoor train stations and on subways, the commuter rail, buses and paratransit vehicles, even though the state had ended similar mandates for other sectors and compliance with the policy had declined. A court order ended the federal public transportation mask mandate in April. Hochul said at the time that the MTA would still require masks “in accordance with the [Department of Health’s] determination.”

Aside from public transportation conveyances and transportation hubs, the state had required masks to be worn in health care facilities, adult care facilities, correctional facilities and detention centers, and homeless and other shelters.

The announcement Wednesday also comes as the Democratic governor is seeking a full term in November and has been knocked by Republican foes for retaining any Covid safety mandates.

By the numbers: Hochul said her decisions are based on the data, and New York reported a seven-day average of about 19 Covid cases per 100,000 population both statewide and in New York City as of Tuesday — about half of the rates reported just over a month ago.

But while Covid cases have dropped in recent weeks, public health officials have raised concerns that the virus could see a resurgence this fall as it has in previous years.

Hochul urged New Yorkers to get vaccinated and boosted against Covid, and she received her Omicron booster shot Wednesday in front of reporters at Boriken Neighborhood Health Center in New York City to encourage New Yorkers to do the same. The vaccine, which was developed to target Covid’s Omicron subvariants, is now available at local health care providers after being approved by the CDC in recent days.

“Having a booster shot tailored to a specific variant is significant,” she told reporters. “It’s the first time that we’ve been able to achieve that. And that makes me very hopeful that this will be an extraordinarily effective booster shot.”

What are y'all's thoughts on this?

Not mine, but this was yesterday, I'm guessing because local tracks aren't running CBTC yet which meant they can get away with it I guess. Would this mean that the (N) next year won't be running any new tech when the Queensboro rehabilitation starts?

QB Local runs on CBTC mode active so its interesting to see how this got through

Anyone thinks the R160s are going anywhere but lines that are CBTC ready needs to stick to playing BVE...

    Now thats a game I haven’t played in a minute…

Lets hope that by the end of this year that some 211’s are in service (at least 30 cars although that number might be a bit too optimistic) so that some 46’s could get more shop time.

As for the 160’s, there’s really no where for them to be aside from CBTC Active Lines and that’s Jamaica Yard. Also the way that the B-Division yards are set up with the uniformity (for the most part) of their Rolling Stock keeps things simple, so no need to complicate it.

(Side note and this is a bit off topic, but with CBTC Being Active on QBL and under construction? on the Culver Line and the 160’s from Jamaica being CBTC Active on top of that, (MTA) could start implementing CBTC on the Crosstown Line now to get it out of the way. Helps especially because that’s already funded in the 2020-2024 Capital Program)

Actually all they did now is shift the issue to Broadway. If Broadway shits the bed (as you say), the (R) can get rerouted via 6 Av, but the (N)(Q)(W) (assuming the (W) is still running in the future) will be f**ked. And with the (N)(Q) trains stuck unable to go into Manhattan due to no other lines being able to accommodate the SMEE cars, trains will get stuck in Brooklyn (Prospect Park for the (B)(Q) and at either 36 St or Atlantic Av Barclays Center for the (D)(N)). And yes, Lexington has to be done in tandem with 7 Av, but in my opinion, Broadway and 6th Av should have been done simultaneously, order enough R211 cars to just finish off all the old cars to prevent this catastrophe. Its one thing when there's only one trunk line where SMEE cars cannot run on (Queens Blvd), but its something else when now the SMEE cars CAN ONLY RUN on one trunk line (in this case, Broadway), because the NTT cars can run in fixed-block territory, but SMEEs cannot run in CBTC territory. And if the older cars are retrofitted with modernized signaling, then might as well keep the R68s on the (B)(D), shift R160s from Jamaica to Coney Island, and give Jamaica / Pitkin / 207 St the R211s for the (A)(C)(E)(F).

That’s a good point but by the time 6th Avenue CBTC comes online, we’ll likely have both Option orders for the R-211 fleet. Which would mean that half of the 68/68A fleet would be spending a majority of their time in the yard…

  9. I agree with @R32 3838 and @T to Dyre Avenue here.

The 46's have been running for about 47 years at this point so replacing them should be a priority. If my math is correct, The 1st Option order should replace about half of the existing fleet of 46's. Then the 1st Option Order alone will replace the rest of the 46 fleet in addition of adding a few extra trains into they system. In what world should that NOT be a priority? Granted, given the current schedule of the order in addition to employee's leaving the Kawasaki plant in Nebreska, I don't expect to see the completion of the first Option order until 2027-2029. It'd be a miracle if we even get the 2nd Option Order (which arguably, I don't think we need the 2nd Option Order unless some 68's decide to shit the bed early)

It will take years for ridership to get back to the way it was, which is why all these unnecessary projects such as CBTC, R211’s, etc etc are not a priority.

Better to future-proof the system if thats the case then, therefore adding a level of necessity to these projects.

I know that I posted this before but I don’t recall if I got a response from this, but concerning the upcoming (J) train shutdown east of 121 St, and the claim that the MTA will run the same level of service along the line, why will the (Z) train and skip-stop service be suspended? Is there something I’m missing, because if the same level of service can be provided along the line, then wouldn’t it make sense for the same service patterns to run (or just start the skip stop service west of Woodhaven Blvd, and have the (J)(Z) both stop at 121 St, 111 St and 104 St

They’ll probably run the (J) at 5 minute Frequencies (12 TPH) to cover both lines.

They did about 20 years ago but people want a one seat ride. No one wants the (B)(D)  via 4th ave and (N)(Q) via Brighton which would be the plan if they went forward with the plan.

This might be a hot take, but I think the 211's incoming and IBX (once fully realized) would mitigate any potential problems with swapping either 2 routes passing through DeKalb.

  12. Made 2 maps out of boredom, one where I grabbed ALL Rail Systems in the New York Region and threw them together

And one where I grabbed all Current, Under Construction and Planned ADA-Accessible Stations for the NYC Subway System (along with stations I think could/should get ADA in order for there to be even spacing between ADA Stops):

The new article from rpa on the daily news is the biggest conflict of interest and shilling i have ever seen when one of the queensway members is on the rpa board, very biased

Had my fun with that thread….

Apart from wanting to see Rail Service be reactived, main reason I’d like to see this ROW be used again is so that I can use it for my own day to day commutes. Beats walking to Continental, Dealing with Woodhaven or the delays of the 23

Happened to glance at the Sunday website of the Daily News. There’s an article about the old Rockaway Beach LIRR branch. The jist of the story is that reactivating the rail line is not gonna happen, period. Looking forward to hearing from you rail fans and your take. Carry on.

    ~~Is there a link for the sourced.~~

    - Nvm, I just read it, and while it doesn’t look like it’ll be reactivated anytime soon, I personally think its short sighted to say that reactivation is not happening/impossible. Also the minute I read “Friends of the Queensway” I already saw there this was going. While the idea of a linear park sounds nice, I find it to be idiotic (alone) given the current Circumstances of Woodhaven and getting to/from the Rockaways. I personally prefer the “Queenslink” Option. Combining both the Rail and Linear Park Option sounds like an interesting concept to me that gets the best interests of both ideas. Although with the lack of any political will right now, I doubt anything will happen in the short term as much as I’d like for it to.
