That’s awesome! How you like it so far seeing that it’s been 4 years. I’m sure you’ve been through it all.

I have a class for 5/16 but currently on Medical Hold. Going in on Tuesday to have it cleared and hopefully start the following Monday.

Good luck I hope you clear and get to start on 5/16!! The job is great honestly! It has its days, but it’s a job just like any other, you have the typical work place stuff, egotistical dispatchers, supervisors, superintendents, etc. I don’t pay it any attention, I come in, get my schedule card and get on my train. I will say this, focus and get your rest! Nobody is perfect but try to limit your chances of incidents by being tired or not paying attention to detail! Other than the homeless problem and emotionally disturbed customers, it’s not bad at all. Hope to see down here soon!

That’s crazy. I think they are more lenient with TOs because when I went for Bus Operator back in 2018 they were saying minimum is 4 points to even be considered for employment. Anything more was a red flag for them and wouldn’t hire you. Until that was gone or reduced.

Yeah that’s a fact I got denied for bus operator before for that same reason lol, but I’m glad and thankful I got in as a T/O.

Hello everyone and thank you all for all the helpful info!

List # 38** Called in for Pre employment on 4/5. Patiently waiting for the next step.

Does anyone that's been hired have any any info on whether some past points on my license would affect me getting the job?

I have a valid NY state drivers license (never any suspensions) but i do have some points from a driving violation in 2020.

Really hoping this wont shatter my chances at getting the job. Any info is appreciated.

That doesn’t matter I started in 2018 and I had close to 10 points lol they just don’t want any open tickets, parking or moving violations! I believe someone said that they haven’t been asking for abstracts recently I don’t know.

Hello all, 442x here. Just got home from pre employment.  First off, it’s a LONG day, be ready for that and make sure you have no other obligations during the time you’re there.  If you work take off.

with that said you’ll go sign in at the front desk and continue to the 5th floor .  You’ll check in and sign your name that you’re reporting.  For us, they took us upstairs with the director of training g and gave us some things to learn and know about the job.  We then went back to reception and someone went thru the whole employment processing paperwork on a group basis

*my advice, have everything already completed, it’ll get you through faster.*. Quicker you hand in your application is the quicker you get taken to the lab.

you’ll then go the lab where it says stamp your paper….unnecessary for us so only do that if they tell you.  You’ll wait (again) to take a urine drug test.  They will not provide water unless you don’t provide a specimen.  But you’ll be there 3 times as long for sure.  You’ll then receive your drug test copy of papers and be sent on your way .  They say they’ll contact you within 3-90 days

what the training director said:  “don’t worry about how many classes, we’re hiring train operators all year and we need at least 600”. “We’ll be doing two classes a month then skip a month, then do another two classes, etc”

so with that said, more emails to come for sure…keep a look out

if y’all can just let me know what we’re up to medical wise it’d be appreciated

    any questions I can help

I can confirm that I heard this exact number from a TSS in terms of the number of T/Os needed and how they would hiring for the rest of the year! Good luck to all and hope to see ya down here soon!

Yeah I know, but they see tons of stuff and the majority of it is irrelevant too, so how can you expect them to retain everything when they're taught to walk around on pins and needles the entire time.

I still think that YX should eliminated and more time should be dedicated to hands on posting in the yards and on the road on every tour.   Let's say they post AMs in the yard and now they're YX with a switching job out of a terminal on the PMs and expected to layup trains, it's completely different.

I agree with a few things you stated here. A lot of the information being given during school car is irrelevant, however if you really asset yourself and pay attention a lot of those things become very relevant when you’re out there on your own. Now to be honest we know this list was pretty much started at a time when there was a high shortage of T/Os so coming in you should know that you’re gonna be used as is! They tell you schedule wise you can be anywhere on random tours, so just gotta mentally prepare for that. In terms of the moves, just ask, either other T/Os, dispatcher or TSS, believe it or not there are still people down here that have no problem helping out, but if you don’t ask you can’t be helped!

They want every job since high school.  No resume has every job you've ever held since hs.

I took a picture of all my information I did the first time for pre-employment lol I know it sounds like a lot but when we went back in for a second time I had that to reference. Also they tell you to do everything with the best of your knowledge. So as long as everything matches both times they call you in you’re fine.

To those who are YX now..

Please dont tell the Dispt "Oh I'm not to comfortable doing that"

Especially if its JUST a move where one has to take a train change ends and take it back to lay up behind another train..

Seen two of them Use this excuse at 179...

Smh what is wrong with people? Like I get it, the job isn’t easy in the beginning, how are you going to learn if you’re not actually doing moves?

What kind of route guides did they add? The little pamphlets from 2013 or did they make something new?

When I say route guides, someone told me they added the points of no return location questions and other what aspect would you get if you’re this train questions to test. That’s what I was told.

YX begins this week. the consensus is that everything is super rushed.....too rushed.  hope you did well on your practical and if not, you will - best of luck !!

lol well I know for the B division it was a lot of information packed into a short time and this was a before they added CBTC and route guides to the curriculum. You’ll be fine it really takes applying yourself to make sense of the information that’s being thrown at you! They need ppl so it’s gonna feel like it’s rushed because they’re literally trying to get every body they have on the road lol…Good luck on ya practicals if you haven’t done them already!

I did my pre-employment January 7th but haven’t been called for medical. I asked a School Car TSS if there were more classes scheduled but he didn’t know -_-

Be on the lookout they are definitely going to be having more classes as per a TSS I spoke to 2 days ago! It’s a process but the spring coming and they’re ramping up for spring and summer, with all the T/Os that’s out, just make sure you check your email daily! Good luck 🙏🏽

Thats awesome. Keeping the same tour and RDOs the whole time would be amazing! They made it seem like they change your tour and RDOS all the time when XX

I’ve been told that back in the day it used to be like that’s I recently had a student who told me that a couple of his classmates had this happen, they went from AMs to MIDs then to PMs I believe, but this was one of the first couple classes after Covid.

can you please explain to us, or give us tips, about "bids"?  can we "bid" when we're Road Extras?  I don't even know what a bid is honestly :(
I know we can't choose a "pick" until 2 years or even 7 years right?  Any links or resources that teaches us about things like Picks / Bids / Penalties / WAA etc?  in your opinion is it best to pick even the worst pick vs continue being a road XX?   I'm really lost and the TSS hasn't really taught us anything about work related things in depth.

also i am very concerned and already sad that we cadets won't be able able to have a stable locked schedule until a few LONG years being extra extras :(

I’ll piggyback off of what the other poster said, honestly right now the TSS isn’t going to explain those things as there are other more important things in your curriculum! I remember we had a day when they did explain all of that to us, showed us how to read the daily sheets, showed us how to use the IVR and a whole bunch of other administrative stuff! You’ll get there just be patient!

No it wasn't my class. I hope so! How long have you been out of school car and was it hard being xx?

This year I’m gonna make 4 years as a T/O. Honestly XX wasn’t bad for me, made a lot of money, but I was working my RDOs soon as I came out lol, I honestly felt like we didn’t get enough time on the trains so kill 2 birds one stone, gain experience and money. Now to be fair, I won a job on the A so I would only do A jobs on my RDOs in the beginning  lol…but to each it’s own! It was different when I came out, still short but I don’t think as bad as now and with Covid, so I had my wishlist honored, never had my RDOs or tour changed the whole time. The higher your number the better the chances of that happening.

Oh wow that's really good. One guy dropped out of my class and I've heard of a few others dropping out of other classes from my induction.

When did your class start? Sometimes people know the job just isn’t for them. A friend of mine had dropped out of the class on the last list, he was told me, “I know that job just isn’t for me, I’m not gonna waste my time and theirs.” And he said he was content with his decision.

  15. 8 hours ago, FilippoSironi said:

Many students have dropped out of your class?

From my class, none, from my induction group I know of only 2, it was 70 of us, I remember a B/O went back to title, his class told us he just wasn’t feeling the job. Then there was an older gentleman that resigned because he couldn’t study enough and didn’t want to get fired. He just had a newborn his class stated, so you know the dynamics with were difficult. Not sure if he has the option to come back like if he were to defer. Again most of the B division T/Os in my induction made it through and still here, there was one T/O that didn’t make it pass the road practical.

Well from what I’ve heard I did get in contact with someone from HR and I was told that the last number appointed was 308• and the last class was feb 14 and there won’t be no class no time soon but always to be on the lookout for a email regardless anything can change.  I also was told the exam will expire in September but it’s only up to DCAS to extend this exam so in august they would have much more information for us.

Just stay on the DCAS site and this forum! There is a lot of informative people on here! The C/R 6601 exam was extended, I learned this just from checking the site. Don’t listen to whispers especially from people who do not work for transit, if they extend it they do, if not, it is what it is, just stay positive and ready! The list is moving fast and with Covid calming down a bit since the start of the year, you never know what might happen for spring and summer!

I know they still need train operators they're short staffed super short staffed. This Saturday into Sunday 207 Station on the A has no train operators at midnight to move the trains, barely any. So they had a conga line of trains waiting outside of 207 for like 40 plus minutes in order for us to move in. I got back to 207 and when I got there the dispatcher was stressing out because they had zero train operators to move a train so that other trains and could pull into the station...

This is true there is a shortage of train operators but this particular scenario can be caused by a lot of different factors. What it sounds like because I’ve been on the A and witnesses this first hand, there’s probably an open switching job at 207 and the crew office doesn’t want to give it to anyone for RDOs because they try to fill all road jobs, then the day comes, they don’t have any board T/O cause that person prolly picked up a road job lol. They did this to me on numerous occasions “oh you know I can’t give you a switching job for your RDO!” While I have literally seen others work switching and yard jobs on RDOs. It’s a lot of favoritism and pick and choose that goes on down here, just don’t let it bother you, remember names and faces lol so when the roles are reversed and they need a favor, you hit em with the nope and let ‘em deal with the congo lines lol

You are really at the mercy of the HR department at this time.  The next class already started on Feb 14th I believe.  There might or might not be a next class, but from what I've heard from folks in the previous class......there might be a next class after all since many students are quitting and dropping out like flies.  This training program is beyond excruciating to a point of sadism.  (if ur a masochist you might love this training program)

lol it’s not that serious honestly! The emphasis put on getting 100s on the 2 signal exams is only so you really understand how to react out there on ya own, it’ll all make sense once you’re solo in that cab! This year I’ll make 4 years and stuff from school car always pops up in my head during a random trip on a random day! I’m not saying the course isn’t hard, since I came out they have made CBTC part of the curriculum and have made it mandatory to know the route guide I heard. Again if this is what you want then you will apply yourself, study and make it happen! I’m not a train buff, but I wanted a city job that pays well enough for me to grind like I did at other lower paying jobs, with benefits and a pension, so I took it serious and made the necessary sacrifices! Sorry for the late reply lol just finished a late clear. lol. From reading a few post from a few of you I can tell you’re hungry like I was for the opportunity to start so don’t let negativity deter you, the job isn’t for everyone and that’s fine, but if you really want it, make it happen when called upon! Good luck to you all…any new hires if you need anything feel free to PM me always willing to help with any questions!

First, congrats on getting the job. Thank you for sharing some insight too. What tours would you say you’ve been getting most frequently and what lines/locations sor far?

When you first come out they let you fill out a preference sheet, depending on needs though that’s where you’re gonna get placed! You get to rank what tour you want in order AM, PM, MID. Then the RDOs, if I’m not mistaken they also ask which is more important to you tour or RDOs. Honestly I heard a class recently came out and they all got dumped on MIDs even with the preference sheet. Once you’re XX you’re at their mercy, sometimes though they do work with you, it may also depend on what number on that list in terms of your group and those in front of you! Obviously seniority plays a part. Don’t let that discourage you though, just gotta put in your time, or put in a vacancy bid and hope to win something lol…good luck

This RDO talk doesn’t bother me one bit. For the better part of a decade my rdo were Tuesday/ Wednesday. These days my rdo is Friday. It is literally and figuratively BLOOD MONEY

lol for real there’s many factors as to why preferences don’t get honored, that’s something that we all should expect starting at the bottom of the seniority list!

  21. 7 hours ago, Jchambers2120 said:

Lol that's what I'm worried about, I heard stories about how they get down in the B div lmao it's like family in the A. Then to add icing to the cake when the  TSS's were explaining drum switches on the 32's and BCO's my head started spinning. Hopefully stuff will start to kick in once we go into the field.

Yeah the equipment should be easy to get used to, don’t know your tour but them 32s definitely are annoying for C/Rs especially on the midnights smh! I know you’ll be fine overall tho, gotta think positive down here!

Start my "A" to "B" transfer tomorrow, I'm a nervous wreck lol.

Don’t be it’s not that bad, lol just gotta get used to the new attitudes you’re gonna have to experience but I don’t think the operation is big difference.
