The connection from the BMT Jamaica Line to the BMT Myrtle Avenue Line used by the (M) just east of Myrtle Avenue station was completed rebuilt from the ground up in 2018 (I think).

Additionally, parts of the Babylon Branch that were grade separated in the 1970s/80s are elevated. There are mostly just short sections at stations to make space for parking below, but there's also a long uninterrupted elevated section between Lindenhurst and Copiague.

The (M) line structure that was rebuilt was an concrete structure, not an steel EL.

Honestly i wouldn't be surprised if they ordered more XD's

It would be so much better if NJ Transit ordered a couple hundred buses every year like NYMTA rather than huge orders to refresh the fleet at once... Orders that take serveral years to complete. The NABI and MCI orders are huge. That NABI order started like in 07/08 and didn't finish until like 2013.

That way theres an balance where there's an mix of old and new buses.

Whatever they choose to replace the NABIs it will most likely be one order of one fleet of buses. I'd say they probably choose the XD40 to be uniform with the artic fleet. Then you only have to supply parts for three models of buses, NF, MCI and who ever is making buses for that pilot order of electric buses (Proterra? I forgot).

Bx3 unreliable?? That route is packed to the brim Literally the first stop in Washington Heights

Yeah, that's because the route is unreliable with long gaps in service!  I totally agree with the article that the BX3 is unreliable. Every time I ride it its ethier long gaps in service or unscheduled short turns. Nice route to fan when it's running properly though.

  4. Today the (4) train I rode from Utica to Grand Central I assume the automated announcement system wasn't working as the C/R made manual announcements at every stop.

Also been on an (L) train not too long ago where the automated announce system was out of sync and the C/R had to make manual announcements.

This doesn't explain why Jerome's R142As look so dirty compared to their R142s. Any observant rider like myself can tell the difference between the two, not just by their sounds, but also how clean & dirty they are. Clearly Jerome's 142s received some type of treatment that their 142As haven't received yet. Hopefully, they get their treatment soon, cuz they're definitely an eyesore in their current condition.

BTW, I'm a new member on the forums.

In my observation they are equally dirty on the outside *shrugs* Ethier way I hope the (4) line fleet get washed soon as well. The A & C line fleet recently got washed and the cars look so much better.

Using the (R) from Whitehall St up to 86 St-Brooklyn will be longer and crowded because of a crew shortage on the Staten Island Ferry, hourly waits until next morning. Although, NYC Ferrys are free but still be packed with extra boats.

Seems like this was done on purpose by SI Ferry crews calling out sick in the masses to make a point (only guessing). Surprised that the SI Ferry captains only get paid 70K a year according to an article I read. 70K a year to operate those big ass boats though the congested NY Harbor? Seems like they are underpaid. I always thought SI Ferry captain was a six figure gig.

Anyway, here's the article shedding some light on the situation.

  7. I rode an SRO M98 before N/B in the peak direction, so cutting it might not go over well with its ridership base. I think the route has its purpose because none of east side subway lines go to Washington Heights.

Even with HRD traffic the M98 is probably still quicker to the heights from the east side vs taking the (4) train to the BX13, BX11 or BX35.

  8. Westchester has R62As now and the cars are in good shape. R188s which is just an R142A with CBTC runs the same as they did when Westchester had them and the MDBF jumped up  then dropped though the floor, IIRC the Bombardier R142s now have an higher MDBF than the both the 2013 built R188s AND the converted sets.

If Jerome is to blame for the 142As condition then why aren't the Bombardier R142s there having the same problems?

Maybe just maybe, the R142A/188 is just a shitty subway car:lol: I like them but they are easily the worst of the NTT car classes.

BTW I don't think individual maintenance shops get to choose to have digital ads installed on their tech trains, I would imagine someone higher in the NYCT rankings makes those decisions. Some of the R143s also has those digital ads.

I was thinking while riding on the Long Beach train this afternoon, the LIRR missed out when it came to the Far Rockaway branch. Long Beach trains get really packed during the summer weekends and if the Far Rockaway were to terminate closer to Rockaway Beach, I bet it would attract those summer beach crowds. It’s current terminal is not even at the main strip over there on Mott Ave where the (A) train is so it is definitely an after thought. I shocked to see one night at around 10pm an almost standing room only train from Long Beach heading towards Penn Station.

Funny thing is the (A) line in the Rockaways use to be apart of the LIRR until they abandoned the Rockaway Beach branch. I guess the LIRR wasn't intrested in Rockaway Beach service.

Nice to hear that weekend Long Beach trains are busy to Long Beach as it's an nice little beach town IMO.

  10. Last night I had a dream where I rode Nova RTS #9327 on the BM2, still had the express bus seats. Got off at Flatbush & Glenwood even though that isn't a stop on the BM2 in reality, transfered to the B41 which was RTS 9302.

Odd dream considering SC never had Nova RTS and FLA never had 9302, nor are those buses notable to me personally.

The problem now is that LIRR barely have enough equipment in its diesel pool for regular service, let alone service service expansion, and/or summer service increases to the Hamptons.

It wasn't that long ago when they had to cancel some service over the summer to meet service, and/or run trains that are short

They should order a surplus of Diesel equipment whenever the current fleet is up for retirement. Or lease cars from other railroads like they did with MARC a couple summers ago. But I heard Port Jeff riders hated the MARC cars so that's probably why they didn't do it again.

    In that case, electrify everything.

Electrification costs 18 MILLION per mile, I don't think the entire LIRR system will be 100 percent 3rd rail anytime soon.

Not even to extend it for more than just the 50 minutes each morning and afternoon that the (Z) ran? I think that whatever usefulness it has is somewhat hampered by running it for such a short period.

Where would the Broadway Line connect to the CPW line? The CPW line is double-decked better Columbus Circle and 110th St, so that’s not a good place to make such connection.

Yeah, I would extend the time period the skip stop runs. Only change I would make.

People have actually been advocating for that in railfan internet circles for years

  13. LIRR canceled the battery powered MU project, claiming it isn't feasible. The article is on Newsday website, but behind a paywall.

As a railfan, I'm so happy about this news:D Diesel branches should be locomotives and passenger cars, also they can share the same pool of equipment with the other diesel branches rather than have Oyster Bay have an oddball battery powered fleet.

  14. This one came out of left field....

Time to dust off Amsterdam depot, most likely the artic routes will be split between Hale and 100th Street, 40 ft routes to Amsterdam if there is space to hold the entire Quill 40FT fleet at Quill. If not overflow of 40FT routes could be squeezed into MTV.

Disclaimer: This is speculation on my part, IDK how the TA will assign routes during Quills closure.
