Does the Metro North have trains that stops at the platform but a certain number of cars can open at said station? For example, to the LIRR, the train to Hempstead is 10 cars making a stop at Nostrand Av from Atlantic Terminal but can cover 8 cars at the platform.

This post reminds me of the hiking stop on the Hudson Line "Brakeneck Ridge", only one door opens at that stop

  2. Thanks to G.Os over the past couple of years, technically it's been possible to ride R46 on the (B) line trackage over the years.

    Brighton Express - (N) via Brighton G.O

    6th Ave - (Q) via 6th Ave G.O

    Concourse - (C) to 205th G.O

Under normal circumstances, one would be able to ride between Propect Park - DeKalb on the (Q) and CPW on the (C)

Except for 47th-50th - 59th Street, I ridden an R46 over 98 percent of the (B) line route without officially riding an R46 (B) train.

Is there a tracker for the R46 (B) train or some way to find it on the tracker website?

There's an reddit thread about this, but it hasn’t had an update in a while.

Otherwise, there's no tracker for subway cars for the public like there is for the buses.

Best bet is to wait at Atlantic Ave until it shows up, or you can ask the NYCT twitter page.

Well thank you for explaining this. I knew there had to be a reason. I just wish they weren't so loud as they make it more difficult to hear announcements, which are often already muffled and unclear. I hope they find a solution for this soon.

    (L) line crews often turn off the HVAC when they have to make manual announcements, once their finished, they turn the HVAC back on.

  5. The reason the (7) ran 10 car trains in the 90s is because the R33WF singles did not have A/C while the married pair R36WF did. This was only done during the summer, the (7) ran 11 car trains the rest of the year.

They did not want to run an fleet not equipped with A/C in the 90s. Towards the end of the R33/36 WF service life's in the early 2000s they had no choice but to run the 33WF singles during the Summer because ridership was so high.

Why is it that the Bombardier trains are so smooth while the Kawasaki makes (R142A, R143 especially) jerk so roughly? Can't say the R142A/R143 have aged gracefully inside compared to the R142 and R160s, either.

If inside you mean the interior it depends on what yard the cars are based out of. 239th R142s interior are kinda raggedy compared to Jerome and E180th and the R160s interior at ENY are horrible compared to Jamaica. R143s interior are bad because of the yard they are based out of.

Also someone keeps vandalizing the interior of the ENY fleet with permanent marker writings on the ceiling, which they cover up with blue sheet paper which does'nt match the rest of the interior color wise. They even vandalized one of the R179 cars.

  7. Bus service that pass though Jamaica Queens must be a mess right now due to a cop being shot in the area.

In relevance to this forum, the cop was responding to a fight on a bus (bus driver flagged the cop down due to two riders fighting over an seat).

  8. Had an nice ride on the 3:01 NEC express to Trenton :D hauled ass on the straightaway. Those 3900 expresses are some of the best express commuter rail runs to fan in the region.

However my train back to NY is 15 to 20 minutes late due to mechanical problems. I hope my return train is an Arrow 3, train I took here was MLV - ALP consist.

You’re spot on right there. There are good buffs and there are fake buffs that do nothing but vandalize and damage equipment that is used for passenger service, especially any kind of software related activities that do damage the train’s information. My old company’s ID card (I don’t work for them anymore) was used to gain access to free rides on railroads or subways just recently by these fake buffs and if they found out that it was used, that person will be fired and charged with criminal conspiracy to commit fraudulent.

Software related activities that do damage to the train information? Huh?

Yes, some of these younger railfans can be a problem but IMO yall is starting to be ridiculous about their activities.

How come some of the station signs are red and green? Can they convert those stations to blue instead? Some people will find the colors annoying even if they’re minor issues.

New Haven line = Red signs

    Hudson Line = Green signs

The Harlem line uses Blue signs that's why the other two lines don't.

  11. M8s are used in CT, you must be talking about Danbury & Waterbury branches. They aren't used there cause those branches aren't electrified.

Same applies for the Harlem line between Southeast and Wassic, that part of the line isn't electrified so MUs can't go there.

M7 can't run in CT cause the New Haven line in CT uses overhead wire as an power source (M7s are 3rd rail only).

M9s don't run in Upper NY cause Metro North doesn't have any M9s.

The R32's aren't "long gone". They will never be gone. NYCTA knows that if the 179's or R211's have another mishap that results in the entire fleet being taken out that they have to come back in service.

If the R211 encounter an issue a few trainsets into its order, they would just bring back R46s in storage to replace the sidelined R211s. They won't send the R46s straight to scrap, they'll be in storage for a little while then as more R211s hit service the R46s will gradually be scrapped. This is how it was done with the cars the R142/142A and R160s replaced.

AFAIK they are still sending R32s to scrap, eventually only the garbage train units and museum cars will be the only R32s left.

  13. I rode it, it's a nice train but man the reduced seating.... benches only seat about three ppl comfortably, four or five ppl if you squeeze in there. I heard regular riders, not railfans saying "well where you gonna sit" "Where's the seats"  Other than that the train got positive responses from the riders from what I saw.

My only issue with the cars, otherwise they are very nice, smooth ride and they accelerate fast. I like the fact that the wall ads are all digital, that's my favorite thing about the R211 for now.

Also the headlights on these cars are very bright! Reminded me of the Track Geometry Car when I saw it in the tunnel cause the headlights are so bright.

  14. 4236 might be scrap, just seen it being towed down Flatlands Ave AWAY from Flatbush Depot. Look like it was missing parts on the roof in the rear (wiring exposed).

Or it was going to ENY CMF, reason I'm not sure is the bus is taking Flatlands Ave and I'm not sure what highway it could possibly be going to. Maybe it's heading to left on Pennsylvania Ave to Linden Blvd to the Van Wyck to the Whitestone Bridge and it's using that routing to ECH?

Anyone else start to see people with a box full of candy (and usually with their little kids) walking around trains quite often nowadays? I'm starting to see them on almost every (J) train I board, and sometimes on the (E).

Yes, it seems this hustle has exploded in popularity recently. Feels like I see multiple ppl selling candy per subway ride.

Amtrak will reduce service on the Hell Gate Bridge to accommodate work on Penn Station access.

Surprised since Amtrak isn't THAT frequent between NYP and BOS, I'm guessing single tracking between Queens and New Rochelle? That's the only reason I can see them needing to cut service though there.
