Oh don’t remind me of that infamous (F) train breakdown. My cousin visiting from overseas was on that train and it scarred her for life, considering that at the time she was a teenager. Don’t forget the (A) train derailment and the Queens Blvd (F) derailment.

Sorry to hear that about your cousin.

Those two derailments wasn't the train's fault, it was defects with the tracks that caused them to derail.

Why tf did the MTA cut out the R32s because 2 years of low ridership anyway?

Cause they was unreliable and expensive to run. Going by MDBF data the R32s were much worse than the R46s are now. MTA probably was like good riddance to that fleet.

Not replying to you specifically but replying to the general thread. The R46s had two high profile breakdowns WHILE THE R32 WERE STILL IN SERVICE! (The one on the (F) died between West 4th and Broadway - Lafayette and the one died on the (R) and had to be towed). The R46 MDBF dropped 20,000 miles while the R32 were still in service from 2017 until the pandemic started in 2020. The R46s would be in the exact same shape they are in now if the R32s were still running.

  3. The new 2022 XD40s, the front door can be closed from the outside using an key. The slot is placed near the bus I.D number in the front. When did they start spec'd ing MTA buses with this feature?

On the older buses the B/O usually has to push the doors to open/close them when boarding or leaving an OOS bus.

  4. NJT XE40 made its debut today (or very recently) a fanner I'm subscribed to has an video of it. The interior has next stop screens similar to the ones on MTA buses. The new signs also show the weather forecast, I wish the XD60s had these screens, hopefully this spec change is permeant with the new signs.

  5. I used to collect bus timetables from Newark Penn as a kid, this was back in the flexible metro days so that was an long time ago lol, haven't seen any there in modern times. EDIT: as per the poster above, Newark Penn still does have bus timetables.

I wish NJT had a bus map for downtown philly, they don't have to include the Septa routes just the NJT routes. NJT philly bus operation is confusing to me, like is the 551 a loop in downtown Philly or it terminates and layover somewhere in Philly?

Also on a different note can someone clarify: are the base order R211A's supposed to start arriving this year, once the 30-day test is over? I read somewhere that they've been delayed to 2025 at the earliest but maybe that is the second option order that article was talking about?

I ride the (A) a lot and honestly the 75-footers are giving me a lot of anxiety lately with the closed storm doors, especially when there's an issue and the train is stuck in a tunnel underground. I can't wait for the R46s to get off the (A) ...

The R211s will start arriving this year once the pilot train passes its 30 day revenue service test.

And to add on to this, the way how I look at service cuts is the exact way (MTA) did during the 2010 cuts.

Don’t give me that “you don’t use this line” excuse. I’m looking at the ridership numbers to justify my opinion, just like they did back in 2010. Unfortunately if they don’t get money, they are going to cut service where it’s least used. This isn’t a “foamer” mentality, it’s buisness.

And to just to recap what they might do if they get into another budget crisis:

    No (B) service in Brooklyn.

Weekend (M) service ends at Myrtle Ave-Wycoff Ave.

Fulton St & Broad St (J) closed during Sundays.

    (Z) eliminated except TPH would be decreased.

    (W) eliminated. Again.

    (3) late night service eliminated.

J & Z line ridership is too high to eliminate the (Z) . When the TA suggested to eliminate it in 2010, they realized they would have to replace all of the (Z) train runs with (J) runs to meet the demand, the line is that busy during the rush.

No way the (Q) would be able to handle Brighton by itself on weekdays, it can barely handle the Brighton on weekends!

I don't think closing two stops for one day saves much money, Fulton (J) is probably busy on Sundays

  8. Chambers and Broad were closed on weekends years before this site even existed, so posters on here didn't even have an platform to complain about closing those stops on weekends cause social media and this forum didn't exist yet!

I remember riding (J) trains terminating at Chambers on weekends in 2004.

There's no fat to trim in regards to service cuts on the subway, no way the (J) would be cut short two stops in the city. Most of the system is pretty well used during the day and early evenings.

It seems that the MTA can never learn from its mistakes. This is like the fourth year the MTA has done the 53 St tunnel full closure GO between Christmas and New Years, and they keep screwing up. This was the perfect year (and next year too) to maximize work zone access, since the Christmas Eve/New Years day holidays fell on weekends. Also, there have been many signal and switch issues + mechanical breakdowns during this GO that have caused invasive reroutes which were not really necessary. For example:

    1. This year (and next year too), the GO could have ran from December 23rd 10PM to January 2nd 5:30AM, doubling the time that the work zone is available for workers to get more projects and upgrades completed.

    2. The 6 Av Local tracks CANNOT handle 30 TPH from the (E)(F) trains like Queens Blvd Express tracks can, which is why you've been seeing (F) trains being rerouted via Crosstown during rush hours. Its train cap is only 25 TPH. To fix this, the MTA could have just canceled the 179 St (E) trips, and slightly reduced the (F) service by cancelling the <F> and making sure that headways on the (E)(F) were 5 minutes each (24 TPH). This would likely also mean fewer Kings Highway trips, or a slight reduction in service to/from Stillwell Av if the pattern of alternating (F) trains between Kings Highway and Stillwell Av has to be maintained.

    3. Switch issues and train breakdowns at West 4 St have been causing reroutes on the (C)(E)(F) lines because its been a long time since these switches have been in continuous service, in exchange for "locking in" the 36 St interlocking and Queens Plaza interlocking. The tracks that are used in that West 4 St area to switch 6 Av trains back to 8 Av (southbound), and vice versa-northbound are likely seldomly used (when there are GOs and emergency reroutes), meaning they dont get as much TLC as mainline revenue tracks. Thats like saying 'lets reactivate the Nassau St connection to the Montague (R) tunnel'. Because of these switch issues and capacity issues along 6 Av, you've been seeing reroutes daily such as:

    - (C) trains express south of 59 St-Columbus Circle

    - (E) trains rerouted to 2 Av (F) station

    - (E) trains rerouted via Broadway to/from Whitehall St (which interferes with the (N)(Q)(R)(W) due to needing to switch from the express tracks to local south of 57 St-7 Av)

    - (F) trains bypassing Manhattan altogether by rerouting via Crosstown, which delays the (G)

The TA canceled the (E) to 179th Street trips for the PM Rush today.

  10. This is not an article from The Onion, lol......

The MTA’s $1.1 billion plans to buy 500 new electric buses could be derailed unless New York state’s utility regulator cuts the authority slack on its electric bill, transit officials warned.

Gov. Kathy Hochul and her appointed MTA leadership have touted ambitious plans to convert the entire fleet of 5,800 to electric power, beginning with the new purchase. But powering just the existing 15 electric buses currently costs two to three times diesel or natural gas, officials wrote in Dec. 6. comments submitted to the state Public Service Commission (PSC).

State law signed by Hochul last year required the PSC to reduce the impact of peak “demand charges” on large-scale electric vehicle (EV) charging operators like the MTA. The commission has until Dec. 31 to come to a decision on how big of a discount to give.

  11. Surprised since the LIRR M3 came back this year, there's only been one set running all this time until today:lol:

There's some railfans on YouTube I'm subbed too that's has multiple videos of the M3s regularly uploaded, giving the impression there was at least multiple sets running at once.

Its mindblowing they have that much footage on board of one commuter rail train that seems to run at random, on multiple lines on an daily basis.

At least this one was publicized. The (N) service was quietly reduced a while ago. Trains are like 15 minutes apart sometimes. That was unheard of except on the (G), (S), or night time service.

This is common on the weekend on the (N) from what I noticed, (N) line headways seems normal on weekdays from my experiences.

  13. Other than an Saturday only (D) line G.O, this weekend there was no G.Os on any line in the system this weekend.

There's no weekend G.Os next weekend except for a minor (D) line G.O skipping 155th S/B. Back in the day up until the late 2000s, they rarely had weekend G.Os between Thanksgiving and New Years.

NICE is adding a new pilot route, the n75 between Hempstead and Uniondale via Peninsula Blvd/Hempstead HS, weekday rush hours only.

    n70-12-21-22.pdf

Surprised they have enough funding to create an entirely new route. Always thought the Nassau County bus system got crumbs from Nassau County in terms of funding that they barely have enough funding to run the routes they already have.

I don't think the B39 should continue operating TBH. It's pointless, the amount of money they spend to run it they could instead put in to build elevators at Marcy & Essex St. That is the entire point of the route in the first place right?

It would be very difficult to put an elevator on the Brooklyn bound platform at Essex as the platform is very narrow. Marcy already has elevators on both platforms IIRC.

Doesn't the B39 only use one bus? It's not exactly breaking the bank to run I'd imagine.

I wonder how many people will use this ticket (or in other words, how many people are traveling from an MNRR station to an LIRR station? I can imagine that is a lot slower than driving in many cases.

It will be popular with Yankee fans who live in Long Island. During the season I regularly see Yankees fans in midtown around Penn transferring to the (D) train or sometimes the (A) to the (D)

  17. An MTA Property Protection Agent shot someone at Union Street on the (R) train tonight. First time I heard of those PPA actually shooting someone.

For those who don't know, PPA are the armed guards who guard the employees who work on the MVM. This shooting supposedly happened due to an argument, not an robbery.
