  1. Here's a good reason why it's a "possibility of 143s going to the C": It may not be the whole fleet, it may be the whole fleet indeed. Yes, they spent money installing cbtc. Just like they are going to pay money to have them installed in more fleets like the 160A-1's. It's going to happen anyway. The idea of basically a fleet shift will allow the installation and testing/revenue service of more cars on an existing revenue cbtc line. And in the future they can always shift them back. It 1) won't be the end of the would and 2)easier and maybe even cheaper in the long run to shift them as such until the entire NTT fleet is cbtc ready when they start adding more lines to its cbtc list.
  2. Honest question. I would like to know your reasoning as to why the B would get priority?
  3. The 142A's are kawasaki built. And kawasaki won the bid for 188s and 142a conversion. That's a good sign why 142s from the 2 and 5 lines weren't slated for Flushing.
  4. M8s were specifically designed for New Haven. And with 3 electrical systems, they became heavier than all the other fleets MTA has on their rails. Adding a pantograph to LIRR for tunnel/Penn station use is ridiculous. That's adding an extra electrical system, increasing its weight and maintenance costs. Converting the entire electrified territory to underrunning third rail is a waste of money and time. It's fine as is. MNR has those 3rd rails because it was inherited from NY Central. Remember, the differences in cantinary, voltage and 3rd rails were done purposely duringthe golden age of railroading when every region had different multiple companies and to limit one companies trains in another's territory without payment. Like during the days of 3 subway companies here in NYC. The M9 order is to replace the M3s and have extra trains for ESA. Having them almost identical to the M7s is the most logical and cost effective solution.
  5. 143s shifting to the C kinda does make sense when thinking about how the MTA thinks. Those cars are "broken in". Crews are already pretty much certified operating them. They're already in 4 car sets (which keeps the C at 8 car consists), and add in the factor of shifts due to mileage, well, the 143s have primarily been a Canaries line exclusive(except for a few cameos on the Myrtle shuttle). Hypothetically speaking, 143s shifts to the C, 160s shift to the L, 179s go to the Jamaica line.
  6. The red stripe on the 142s were only as a tribute to the redbirds. If the engineers decided to add color, it would most likely be blue. But they prefer low maintenance costs. "Every screw, every washer, every nut, every hole drilled for the screw costs money and will continue to." That was told to me by Mr. Berger who was an engineer when I was an intern. I learned alot from him. And one of those things learned was what he said. Very important factor even when designing the exterior look of the car.
  7. You may have your few dedicated riders, but not enough to fill the farebox enough to justify the route. And those who really need speed, have the express bus.
  8. The idea of route planning is not to cater to convenience. First you must cater to demand. Example: demand-service to Queens Blvd from the rockaways thus, the Q52. Convenience- extending the q52 to Mott Ave. And the demand was fulfilled by using an already existing route. If there's a demand for your service, logically existing routes will be adjusted first. But there is no demand. It's an idea that seems good(to you) on paper. As commuters, it's not needed. People adjust their commute to schedules and routes. One does not need to backtrack to 111th still. But simply leave with enough time to take the bus to the L, one of the best lines out there hence is large ridership, or the MTA, which finally eliminated the need for a transfer at essex.
  9. Dude, I've lived in bushwick. Commuted thru ridgewood woodhaven and everything inbetween. It's fine as is. I've used it. And if you havens noticed, most lines during rush hour are like sardines. If you post a comment like that, me thinks you've never ridden the Lex. This is New York. Where getting from point A to point B is more important than a seat. When you realize this, your route planning will improve.
  10. You go the other way to myrtle Wyckoff for the L or M. I've been on woodhaven routes. Frequently. It's not really that bad (compared to my 20 daily commute between rockaway and mahattan or the Bronx and even Jackson hts).
  11. The Q55 connects to the J at the East end and the L and M in ridgewood. The Q54 has subways at both ends including a qbl train. If people really want qb, they can transfer to a number of buses along both routes which can reach various points along queens Blvd.
  12. After the 32s and 42s get retired, and pending the r68s rumored upgrade, the 68s will be the last B division cars with roll signs. Ad as we saw in the past (Lenox reconstruction),"stickers" can be added to roll signs for 96st. IF needed.
  13. Here's my two cents on this "what if". Given than a credible source reported the preliminary rumor that the bulk of the 179 order is going to Pitkin, here's what I can see happening. The 5-car sets could go to Pitkin. Given how the r42s go byebye then, I'm assuming the 4car sets go to the BMT eastern to replace the departing 42s. The 5 car sets may run on the A, and after SI gets its 64 R46s, i would use the remaining 46s on the Charlie, making that line finally permanently full length. Now this whole switch with jamaica and ci involving fleets for the Quincy and Fox seems way over the top and, IMO, justba way for railfans to see the new cars on SAS. Why? It's not needed. Why make a complicated multi yard shift when you can just KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid).
  14. Lance, that's a very logical assumption. One that seems more likely than anything. But as always its a wait and see. CDTA, there's been rumors, passed along by credible people, suggesting that Pitkin is in line to be home of the 179s. It wouldn't be much of an upgrade since basically almost every NTT has seen time at Pitkin. Also remember, when the 179s come in, the 32s go out the door. Even if they still keep some 46s, that will only have Pitkin servicing 2 fleets. R32 3838, are those the definite numbers? And remember, those 64 cars have to go thru a refit before heading to SI. They have to be brought up to FRA Class 1A standards since SIR is a railroad. One can assume that along with the refit, an SMS will occur as well. And cars on SI don't go thru as much hell as "main line" cars even though SI cars are more exposed to the elements.
  15. Whether or not it will be enough cars, 64 R46s will be going to SI. And what does the R46s have to do with SAS?
  16. That route has been tweaked so many times over the years. And the current chambers st road work isn't helping either. The service cuts made it worse. One thing I would do is take it off of West St. In and out of battery Park City via Chambers.
  17. I just realized something here's everyone arguing over what's the best way to have SAS extend to Brooklyn right? Yet, this whole time, I'm realizing that no one mentioned that SAS WILL be going to Brooklyn. I guarantee it! Ask me how. go ahead. I dares ya. Lol Seriously, technically we are arguing over something that's already gonna happen.
  18. M22 extention to South ferry? Smh. The last thing the M22 needs is an extension. It had its service reduced on doomsday and it's never been reliable ever since.
  19. I would like a slight update too. But the cost of maintenance drops when the same parts can be used throughout the majority of the fleet.
  20. i hope thats the final exterior design. but since its a concept, i doubt it. Ive seen the concepts for every fleet since the R110's and from past patterns, they wont look exactly like that.
  21. im noticing that this thread has already made a complete 360. we've already discussed a loop. a connection to the centre st subway and using Rutgers. And that "its useless if it doesnt go to the outer boros" line, service to throgs neck, co-op, and every other option conceivable.. and until phase 3 is built, all second ave trains will come from CI( as Q's). as i stated before, the documentation on SAS at mta.info mentions yards throughout all 4 phases. Lay-up tracks will be provisioned starting with phase 2.
  22. Nice! If you or anyone sees 913, please let me know. Im looking to catch it before it gets scrapped
  23. And that was killed off in favor of a Q10 LTD. So.....Why bring it back?
