  1. I don't know how I should feel about bombardier's trucks on the R179. I guess it'll be nice to look at. I just wish there was a bigger pick of the rendering.
  2. Assumptions, assumptions. People are only mentioning the C line because that is the only line the R32s really run on. Means nothing.
  3. But I think the design changes will just be on the outside. Like The SMEEs. I don't think a major design change will happen for a few decades. Opinion is my own of course.
  4. Well, on the subject of the 207 and Pitken yard. They have to get overhauled sooner or later so it's technically not a waste of money. (Not saying you said that but others may) So, basically, you want your trains to be feet propelled?
  5. The design change may come with the R211. And considering that it's a new first digit, it may be so.
  6. Are any of the Staten Island bus depots, more specifically Castleton, CNG Ready? Because I saw C40LF 986 with a few crew members in it signed up as TRAINING BUS on the corner of Broadway and Forest Avenue yesterday.
  7. So I just noticed something that I'm surprised I missed. Over one of the 1970s sections, I saw the metal grates for the tunnel. But the grates were filled with concrete. And they were in sets of 10. Has anyone else ever noticed them?
  8. But it's already pretty obvious that most of the R179s are gonna be in 5-car sets. Enough to kick off the R32s and 42s evenly and a few extra sets for SAS expansion. Why would the C stay at 480 feet?
  9. The only lines that the 4-car sets will be going to are the J/Z. The rest will be 5-car sets and where they go is still in question. Though it's obvious that the later cars will go to the Q for SAS expansion.
  10. Those spare cars are for SAS expansion service so most of them will be in five car sets. Leaving the last 8 to be 2-four car sets. Those extra 5-car sets of R179s may go to the Q when Phase I of the SAS opens.
  11. I know it's more than a slim chance, I just said that so I don't get maximum backlash lol And I'm fine with the C getting R68s, any line they run on automatically becomes sexy.
  12. When you think about it, that's not true. They used the R44s and R46s when they were new. They used the R32s and 38s when they were new (I think). The R27/R30 as well. So there is a SLIM chance the A or C may get R179s.
  13. I like how you all complain about variety when everything from R16-R38 were all nearly identical. Aside from the stainless steel of the R32 and 38.
  14. But do the R46/62/68 use PURE stainless steel like the R32? I'm not sure.
  15. Um, the youngest of the R68s are gonna be 25 this year. They are at their mid-life. They have 15-18 years left. And how ling a car has been on a line has NOTHING to do with how old it is and when it will go. And if by upgraded, you mean GOH, that was required because without it, they would never have lasted this long. The R211 does not have a long way. In fact, it's right on schedule in spacing between new order proposals.
  16. The R46s will be replaced sometime between (by the looks of things) 2016 and 2020 considering that the R211 is going to be purchased using some of the 2015-2019 Capital budget. The retrofit is to make sure they last 'till then without many problems. BUT IN THE MEANTIME, I also hope the R179 gets awarded to someone this month. As much as I love the R32's and R42's, they have to go. It's like having an old dog that IS dying, but it's trying extra hard not to.
  17. The R44 was never supposed to be replaced with thr R160. Due to the Carbon Steel in the belt line rusting quicker than the stainless steel on the car, and other technical problems in the body, the cars had to be retired. The R32 on the other hand, are purely Stainless steel and use the reliable design seen on the Redbirds which keep it in better shape. Had the R44 not began messing up as it did, the R32's and 42s would be gone and the most likely would have had those R44s. Enter someones correction in 3....2....1.....
  18. This is how I see it: The R142/R143 were the R1/R9s and R12/R14s of the New millennium. They presented a new design along with new tech and a new look to fit with the times. The R160s were the R16s of the new millennium. They are overweight but they have basically set the bar for a practical design with the expected flaws while at the same time, setting the design standard for many future car orders. The R179 may basically be the Redbirds of the new age. Improving on the design of the R160s and reducing weight. This may be the most reliable and repeatable design for New Tech cars until something better comes along. The most they may do is change the color of the front bonnet and interiors. Same for everything between R16 and R38 only this time, the sides don't need to be painted. The next outer body change may come with the replacements for either the R68s or the R142s. But that's just my thoughts. I know there are going to be those few that have a shotgun in hand so I'm prepared lol
  19. The original order was 1,700 but was reduced to 1,662 due to economic problems.
  20. The can't just expand an order of cars on a whim, they have to have the budget for it as well. The R110s were test trains, therefore mass producing would've been stupid. Especially since they were never planned to run long term anyway. The R160 order was originally supposed to be 1,700 cars. It was decreased to 1,662 because of budget problems. Especially since the economy was going down in 2008-09 anyway. But had those extra cars been ordered, their yard placement would not have changed.
