1). Yes even though CBTC territory is stated to start at 59’St, it may be just south of the (B)(D) interlocking, so TECHNICALLY the NTTs wouldn’t be needed.

2). the (B)(D) will have to get upgraded regardless because of the 8 Av reroutes possible, similar to how the (Q) will need to be upgraded once 6 Av CBTC is up and running

It's still a smidge more complicated than that, but I'll leave that for the CBTC threads.

It's beyond comprehension why this thought process of CCYD being able to possibly maintain both the B and D fleets continues to be bought up every few months.

I think it's because, at least for some of the armchair transit planners, the work DCE does is an afterthought for them at best. They don't know how long it takes for a train to be inspected and to correct whatever problems the come up.

I had a post GO put-in from CCYD several months back, my partner does all his inspections, we're almost set to go, when we notice one of the end doors would not lock.

Call it in, and within 5 minutes we had an RCI and two guys from the shop who spent a good 15 minutes pulling the lock apart from the backside (removing the whole panel off the #2 end cab wall where the offside enabler would be) and repositioning it to get the door to stay closed. The got it in place, and we made our interval.

watching that, I since have had nothing but the greatest respect for them.

8th Avenue CBTC includes 59th Street. Therefore, all r68's have to leave the B/D.

That's why Concourse will most likely get a good chunk of the 1st option order.

There are still rumors that the B may move to Concourse. I don't know how that's going to work out.

That’s not how CBTC works. Just because the A and C will begin using it there, does not mean that the B and D need it just because of 59th.

it’s because we will need them to be compatible if they’re sent further down 8th avenue.

  3. just because it's through a fence that doesn't mean the side of the fence you are standing on is in a publicly accessible place.

I have a friend who works for NASA, at the Kennedy Space Center, as a launch controller. She showed me a picture of her and her wife with the Artemis 1 rocket, with a fence between them and the rocket. The side of the fence the two were on they were only allowed in because she worked there. It most definitely was not a public place.

  4. The idea of the T sets “failing” is that thier gangways do not prove to make things better.

they are annoying to isolate, with nothing but these stubborn shower curtain doors to close them off.

and all the things people move between cars to get away from, now the only barrier is my cab.

that’s what a lot of people mean when they say fail.

  5. here’s the thing…

(insert picture of Ben Grimm here)

I did see the pilot set today. She was waiting to depart Euclid from being put in for the 0644 to Far Rockaway.

which would imply that she is still on the schedule laid out in the memo.

  6. Well… I asked… and got “I don’t know. She’s been out for more then 30 days.”

like I’ve been saying, us RTO people aren’t always privy to what Car Equipment is doing, and when/if she’s road ready is their call, not ours.

  7. I think we need a new advertising campaign

“please do not touch employees without their consent, for any reason.”

I would think that would be a gimme in this day and age but I just had a old man grab my arm from behind* to get my attention, while I was off duty waiting for my train home.

The reason? to ask me a question I had already answered for him a minute prior.

    * for the record I have hated being touched from behind for most of my life.

I caught the R211 today, so it most likely had a problem if it was out of service. The announcements on the train were acting crazy, the announcement doubled at 80th Street going uptown, and the conductor had to change the program multiple times. It was the 9:26 out of 168th Street and the 11:15 out of Far Rockaway.

Actually, all that is not automatically actually a problem.

My first ride as a passenger, three days after the first came online, they had to change the program multiple times because not all the proper GO programs are loaded into the darn thing. That is an NTT wide issue.

For example, for the F via Broadway for Fastrack the last two weeks, every time I had that job, I had to turn off the AAS at Prince Street going southbound and Atlantic going northbound, because the F via Broadway routes in the computer are all written on the assumption the train is being sent over the bridge. I then had to make fully manual announcements through lower manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn before I could turn the system back on and reset it for the proper station.

the announcement might have "doubled" because they reloaded the AAS because there was a mistake to correct. that happens. Often the crew forgot a reroute is on and had to make an adjustment.

How do some conductors do it so fast when on the road that it seems almost seamless? Just for my curiosity. Some conductors and operators do it so fast or maybe there’s a “fast key” that does it faster.

soemthing else I don’t know is why on the (L) at 8 Av, conductors take SO long to open doors. I end up missing connections to the uptown (A) in the mornings because the conductor changes cars, and then sits down st the terminal to set the announcements going the opposite way instead of just opening the doors like the conductors on the (7) do at Hudson Yards or Flushing Main St. It seems that conductors on the (L) are allergic to hearing “this is the last stop on this train”

You can do some changes while the train is moving, but for the cars I work with on the B division, getting the train to accept a completely newly selected program requires the train to be stopped and the doors open.

that doesn’t have much to do with your original point, thought, about trying to save space by just having the one program.

  10. because it's a LOT of extra button pushes that can only be done when the train is stopped.

If we enter say, A to Lefferts into the system, the computer always assumes we're at the first stop of that route and will play the appropriate announcements. We would have to go in and manually scroll through the stop list to get to the proper one. in the case of the A, that adds up to more than 25 extra button presses on the control consoles every single time.

    lol

Imagine people get a taste of (F) via 53 Street and then community pressure demands that the MTA make it permanent with the (M) on 63 Street.

Considering the mad rush from the F coming from Queens to the 96th street bound Q I see every morning while working the F or the Q… yeah, not going to happen if they can get away with it.

everyone then gets off one stop later at 72 street and starts hiking toward New York Presbyterian… it’s already the 30th busiest station, and just so many people in scrubs it’s not funny.

It does not look good, that's why.

Because in order to make it easier on everyone that programs the trains, it's better to have one datatbase.

1: that’s subjective. I think it looks fine.

2:you can have one database… but there’s no purpose to have one large file to download from said database. There are lots of things in the automated announcements that Staten Island doesn’t need.

Does SIR connect to the Airtrain?

Does SIR have to wait at Union Square or Lorimer Street for single tracking?

Does SIR prohibit moving between cars? (Actual serious question that time, I know they used to allow it but I have not set foot on SI in YEARS…)

also, all the announcements would need to be edited to remove the word “subway” anyway.

I'm surprised there isn't room for all programs...

i mean these aren't top of the line gaming PCs we're talking about. these things need to be simple, given the environment they're designed to work in. Imagine if the only place to put you computer was on top of a dryer that has a broken vibration suppression system, causing it to shake violently. Not a conducive environment for advanced electronics...

Pretty sure you can't run DOOM on them.

  14. The thing about public transit is that not every connection gets made. Sometimes you do have to go out of your way to get somewhere. I mean, you had about, what, 70 years between the unification of the system and having a transfer from the IND to any other part of the system in Downtown Brooklyn,

That being said, given the headways the corridor now operates at, back riding to Roosevelt isn't that big a deal.

  15. I don't see the problem with the orange and blue bullets on the ceiling displays, since, you know, there is no need to confer other information since local and express is all you need.

I also don't see why the 211S needs the full subway program or why the A/T need the SIR included... Partly because I am firmly in the camp of any extension of the subway that would ever get to SI would be new build with a transfer point, say, being built in the median of the Staten Island Expressway.

I wonder why they still had to reduce the (E)(F)(M) during rush hours considering that the (M) has been slashed from QB for the duration of the work. 53 St should be just fine now with no merges at 36 St.

and not to Toot my own horn but I kinda called it with respect to how the MTA now proposed slashing the (M) from Queens Blvd.

    The question now becomes:

how long will the project last now? And does this mean that there’s a possibility of the (C) losing its R46s temporarily due to the now surplus of R160s that will be available from the (M) (to be used on the (J) instead). This could then therefore temporarily assign the R179s to the (C) and reduce their mileage / increase the spare factor on the (A) ? Just a thought.

Here’s a thought… where are they going to park them? There is only so much yard capacity, after all.
