metsfan Posted August 8, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 8, 2008 I was wondering what subway cars are not tunnel friendly, and what the worst combinations of car + tunnel are. Thanks in advance! - Andy
Brighton Local Posted August 10, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 10, 2008 Hmm. For instance; noise, size? along those paths?
trainfan22 Posted August 10, 2008 Share #3 Posted August 10, 2008 R142's in the line tunnel? Or loud HAVC on R142's in the tunnel?
metsfan Posted August 10, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted August 10, 2008 No no. Loading gauge is the maximum profile available for trains to fit through a ROW be it open, a cut, or tunnel etc. Example photo and link to wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loading_gauge
R1Toasty Posted August 10, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 10, 2008 What about the Malbone St wreck? I think that might be considered a case of the tunnel being unfriendly with the subway car.

Yes, i know how narrow the brighton line tunnels are, however i'm asking what the worst combination of car + tunnel etc would be, what car tipe ie R42, and what tunnel, ie brighton line road bridge tunnel (the narrow tunnels under the roads along the route). What cars can't fit well where. - Andy
MotormanMike Posted August 10, 2008 Share #7 Posted August 10, 2008 In the Montague Street Tunnel on the R,M lines from Court St. to Whitehall St. - 75 foot cars (ex R-46) Can't fit in the tunnel that branches off midway for the M line. So if an R with R-46's takes a wrong lineup inside the tunnel , major problems.

Has there been any past incidents? - Andy
MotormanMike Posted August 11, 2008 Share #9 Posted August 11, 2008 Basically , they will slow down to a complete stop once they embed themselves in the tunnel wall ...
