Free Ride: Latimer announces Bee-Line buses to be free for summer

Rides on the Bee-Line Bus in Westchester County will be free beginning June 1.

Westchester County Executive George Latimer made the announcement Monday at a press conference, adding the free fares will run through Labor Day.

"That savings is profound for people who use mass transit," said Latimer.

The financial relief for commuters comes amid soaring gas prices.

Latimer also proposed a gas tax cap of 12 cents per gallon that would run from June 1 to Nov. 30.

"The overall impact of the state and the county action together is relatively modest, about 20 cents per gallon, but there is a difference between paying $4.40 per gallon of gasoline and $4.20 per gallon," he said.

The legislation mirrors action taken in Rockland and Dutchess counties and comes after the Gov. Kathy Hochul suspended part of the state’s tax on gas.

A committee is currently reviewing the legislation.

It must be approved by the Westchester County Board of Legislators by early May in order for the gas tax cap to take effect in June.

Whoa! First CT Transit and now Bee Line..

I wonder if the BXM4C will be free as well, making the 4C free might give the route an much needed ridership boost considering people will still have to pay for Metro North

From what I heard, the 28 is the exception, but that could change.
