I had the most wonderful time busfanning today.
So I was sitting by the Amtrak track all day (10:45-5:05) attempting to get both of the VIA sets, but since Amtrak only runs, what, every two hours on a Sunday? And CDTA runs down the block (literally an 8 second run to/from the track), and that runs every 30 minutes, I spent some time over there fanning in the wait between trains. Now let me give you some background details. There's this road that leads up from the main road to the railroad bridge. Keep in mind, that that road is a public street. So, I wanted to try out getting some shots from higher angles, so every so often i'd walk over there from my spot, and take some shots there. So since the high today was 38, and the winds were 15-25MPH, I figured i'd bring a facemask, especially if i'm going to be there awhile. (Especially because the Adirondack is really sporadic, so I thought it wasn't going to come until 7-8) So, the VIA set comes, a half hour early, and I get a video of it. So i'm really excited I get to go home early, and when i'm walking home I see this broken down bus. I stop for a second, about to pull out my camera, when the supervisor comes towards me. He asks me the usual "Why are you taking pictures of the bus," yadayada. So I recognize this supervisor, because he was the supervisor at my school for the greater majority of last year. But when I answer "it's a hobby", instead of the usual "Oh, ok." I get from drivers/supervisors, he asks me my name and address. And i'm thinking to myself WTF? I mean come on seriously, I busfanned in front of you for months, why do you have a problem now? He said I didn't have to give him my address but I figured, I didn't do anything wrong, so I gave it to him anyways. And I pull out my CDTA hat, just to show him I was just a fan of CDTA, (normally when I do that the drivers/supervisors say "Oh, so I guess you really do like CDTA!") and do you know what he does? He asks "Where'd you get the hat?" I say "CDTA sent it to me." (Which is true, my mom ordered it) And he goes like "CDTA doesn't send these out, these are for employees only," and he goes on this whole schpeel. And he says into his radio that I was wearing a facemask, I had a CDTA hat, and I know he's talking to the cops, because he's a supervisor, so I figure, fine i'll wait this out. I see a cop car pull up, so i'm ready to talk to the cop, and five more cop cars pull out from around the corner, and surround me. Talk about overkill right? I mean even if I was a terrorist, do you really need five cars? (8ish cops) (BTW, I heard on one of their radios that there was a home break-in in progress, and it sickened me that all these guys were hassling me, while they could be out there catching the guy that broke into somebody's house.) And they said they needed to give me a pat down.... ..... But I let them, because yet again, didn't do anything wrong, don't have anything bad on me, I had nothing to hide.... But then I realized that I had a lot of schedules inside my jacket pocket, so I tell them, and I attempt to go take them out real quick, and they're all like "WOAH, WOAH, PUT YOUR HANDS BACK ON THE WALL." They didn't aim a gun at me or anything, but this one guy was shining his flashlight on me. They also needed to check my ID, but I don't have any photo ID because i'm underage, so thank god they realized that and allowed a non-photo ID. So I explain to them that i'm 13, i'm from the city, i'm a busfanner, and they were all like "Oh, ok." I showed them the pictures, and they pointed out how my good my photography was, and just when they were about to leave, the CDTA supervisor makes them take my hat! Why? Because it has the CDTA logo on it, it's CDTA property. (Even tough I got it in the mail directly from CDTA, but the supervisor obviously didn't believe me, because my mom ordered it, so I didn't have all the details) I don't know if he thinks I jumped a bus op or what, but it's a good thing he didn't see my keychain. It's also probably a good thing I didn't wear my CDTA shirt that day either. The cops gave me a property receipt, so i'm going over to CDTA tomorrow to get this settled out. Oh did I mention that one of the cops recognized my address from an earlier indecent? (It was about the crazy guy across the street, not going to get into details about that, but the cop seemed to like guy who filed the complaint, so hopefully that worked out in my favor) Oh and the cops also told me that loitering with a mask on is illegal, even when it's below freezing and snowing, but they didn't arrest me/ticket me for that. So I made it home, the same time I would have if the train didn't come early.....
Oh and here's a mini-rant/story that uses the background information from above (This is the same day mind you)
So the supervisor told me that two bus ops from Troy said I was standing behind a wall, wearing a mask taking pictures. Let me make this clear, I was NOT standing behind a wall. I was standing on an ELEVATED SECTION OF ROAD. But yeah, the B/O's reports was not at all what happened, which is probably why the supervisor took so much precaution. And then the supervisor asked again "Why are you taking pictures of the buses and the drivers. That's when I realized that those B/O's probably exaggerated the story because they didn't want their picture taken. I'm sorry but I have no respect for B/O's that hide behind the "It's illegal" rule (even tough it is legal, but for some reason Troy didn't get the memo, because you're always hassled when you busfan there) because they don't want their pic taken. Seriously, be a man and just say that you don't want you're pic taken. (Even tough, and I explained this to the supervisor; that except for the NABI's (none of which are on the 22 on the weekend) you can't see the driver because of the windshield design. I'm less likely to take a pic of your bus if you say you don't want your picture taken. (I have this regular driver on the 13 who told me the first day, he doesn't want his picture taken. To this day, the only time iv'e taken a picture of his bus, is when I didn't realize it was him, or the back of his bus if it was a Gillig ONLY. (Because Gillig's don't have rear windows) than if you say it's illegal. (i.e. this one driver on a highway run told me filming was illegal, so I went to the back corner seat, and filmed there, and I would never have done this if it was a personal issue.)
*sigh* Well, I don't know if i'm blacklisted from CDTA now or what, but i'm back home now, besides that, it was a very good day, got quite a few good CDTA/Amtrak photos and videos, including both VIA sets.
EDIT: Addition: I also can't believe that supervisor did that to me, he was the supervisor at my school for almost a year, and that's the only place I busfan almost every day. He knew damn well what I was doing, he knew damn well I wasn't a terrorist, etc.
And I know he knows me, because on the last day he was supervisor at my school I asked him about the Orion VI's, and he told me they were all retired a week ago.
Also, yes, they normally don't ship out CDTA hats, shirts, etc. but I know quite a few people at the office, so ya know....
