  1. If any of you guys are interested, I've been thinking about how many times trains have to merge with other lines: : 3 merges : 3 merges : 2 merges : 3 merges : 3 merges : 3 merges : 1 merge : 1 merge : 0 merges : 4 merges : 3 merges : 3 merges : 3 merges : 0 merges : 4 merges : 2 merges : 1 merge : 5 merges : 1 merge : 1 merge It's interesting to see how this corresponds to on-time performance data...(This is based on rush-hour schedules. If I made a mistake, let me know.)
  2. Thanks for not "pulling a Shortline" so to speak and locking the thread right away. Yeah, I was debating with myself earlier today whether or not to just abandon this thread...Repetitive GOs can get annoying and a little bit pointless to post...I'll just see whether anything noteworthy or interesting comes up and then maybe I'll post it here. I certainly don't have my heart set on this thread...
  3. For a calm and relaxing voice, they should've used Annie Bergen from the and 42 St trains (and the R110A I'm pretty sure)...At least she sounds like she's giving an official announcement, not just mumbling the words like Melissa Kleiner. That's just my opinion. Or they should've just told Jessica to calm down ! She sounds pretty calm on the .
  4. You can certainly do that in this thread. I don't see why not.
  5. Well, the MTA provides plenty of convenient information about weekend service changes online. However, I realized that the only way to figure out why service is being changed is to read their press releases, which I doubt that many riders do. So, for curious people (like me), I'll be posting that information provided by the MTA right here in this thread. Other people can post information too, but I hope to avoid redundant posts. Discussion about the service changes posted is welcome. Note: this thread is not meant for unplanned or emergency service changes; use this thread instead. This is not meant to be like the "what if" thread, either, and I hope not to see any fantasy G.O.s. Feel free to post FASTRACK service changes for informational purposes, but discussion about FASTRACK should probably be kept to this thread. Okay, I'll start us off with this weekend just as an example: http://www.mta.info/mta/news/releases/?en=120809-NYCT1
  6. Ugh...Melissa Kleiner sounds AWFUL on the train. I have no idea why so many railfans were "in love" with her voice. Not only does she sound like she's half asleep, but she's just talking, not announcing. Why did anyone choose her to be an announcer? Listening to this video, I really prefer Jessica Ettinger-Gottesman's old "The next stop is" announcement over the current one, though. It sounds much smoother and more human. I don't see why they changed it.
  7. runs via Brighton Local runs to Bay Ridge-95 St via 4 Av local, via tunnel (to provide transfer at Jay St-MetroTech) terminates at Bergen St, some trains terminate at 2 Av terminates at Bergen St, some trains terminate at Bedford-Nostrand
  8. Yeah, I know it's kind of unrealistic, but it's actually quite an interesting challenge IMO. Your solution wouldn't work, as there aren't enough trains to increase service on every single line. Here's my attempt at solving this: runs local in Brooklyn WTC - 168 St runs via 8 Av Express 145 St - 34 St 205 St - 34 St Coney Island - Atlantic Av 71 Av - 2 Av runs via 8 Av Local, terminates at 2 Av Metropolitan Av - Myrtle Av, every 20 minutes extended to Coney Island some trains terminate at Canal St trains terminate at 57 St; some downtown trains terminate at Canal St shuttle trains run between 57 St and 34 St some trains extended to 179 St some trains short-turn at 137 St and 14 St 241 St - 34 St shuttle, Hoyt St - Wall St 148 St - 34 St runs at full capacity, using some cars from the Okay, it's not perfect...
  9. NEXT: Because of TSS reaching 1000 posts, the entire population of New York City is partying in the busy streets of Midtown Manhattan! Thus, every in-service track in that area must receive its maximum capacity of 30 TPH. You'd better solve this fast, because the party has already started! ! This is my 1000th post.
  10. The last stop on every other northbound train is Chambers St. No trains between Bronx and 57 St/7 Av. Trains run between 57 St and Brooklyn signed as . Trains run express between Chambers and 59 Sts in both directions. Trains run in two sections: Bronx to 34 St/Penn Station, and 57 St/7 Av to Brooklyn via the in Manhattan. Trains run via the line in both directions between Roosevelt Av and West 4 St. Limited service operates between 57 and 179 St. No trains between Chambers St and 71 Av. Additional trains run between 71 Av and Whitehall St. Trains run via the between Dekalb Av and 57 St. Here's how I would do it: runs via 8 Av Express runs via Broadway Express and 63 St tunnel to 21 St-Queensbridge, signed as runs via 8 Av local and terminates at 2 Av runs via 8 Av local/53 St terminates at Chambers St
  11. NEXT: the 6 Av express tracks are flooded between 47-50 Sts and W 4 St, and can't be used. The 6 Av local tracks are flooded between 34 St-Herald Sq and 57 St, too. Rules: you can't suspend any routes, and Manhattan must be served with the same TPH as normally.
  12. If I had my way, I'd do the FASTRACK between 125 St and 59 St, but anyway: Queens - 59 St-Columbus Circle, local 207 St - 145 St; uptown trains skip 155 St and 163 St suspended suspended Coney Island - 59 St 205 St - 145 St; skips 155 St runs local; trains run to New Lots Av through the night Shuttle buses run: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=209448607233497620315.0004c67517577db6536cf&msa=0&ll=40.81212,-73.960819&spn=0.102769,0.141964
  13. What I mean is, if you had your way and all the R46s went to the where they supposedly "run better", how would that help anything? Yeah, I know how many trains of R46s the currently uses. But you said, "The R46s used to run better when the was basically ALL R46." How would sending R46s to Jamaica Yard help anything??
  14. What? You just said that the R46s are overused on the , when you're admitting that the runs just as much. Who besides a railfan would want to ride an R32 over an R46? And no, I don't pay attention to the dispatcher when I ride the subway...
  15. TwoTimer, what's going on with the R46s? Do you find them as unreliable as people are saying?
  16. Jimmy, you should try solving my edited scenario. It's much better !
  17. Ah, I see...This doesn't seem to be a very serious problem, though. Unless you're a T/O or a railfan, I don't think you would notice. As far as the weight issue, a 10 car train of R160s is heavier. I never said that everything R32 3838 says is wrong. He just makes so many claims based on his "railfan knowledge" and hardly explains why they make sense. He just says, "I KNOW x, y, z is going to happen." Sometimes he's right, sometimes he's wrong. And, there are certain things that really hurt his credibility, for example: - Saying, "Oh, I was on an R32 and it was clean and fast, so that means R32s are reliable." - Saying that "R68s are a piece of s***" because of brake problems, when many R32s were retired for that very reason and other reasons (http://www.nyctransi...17/page__st__80)
  18. Why would that make the MTA want to retire them? What sort of brake issues? Do you mean that the brakes need to be replaced too often, or that they take a long distance to stop? How did you learn about the brake problems?
  19. Okay, I'm going to re-write my scenario because I've gotta change some things:No trains can terminate at WTC due to a derailment. Because of flooding the 6 Av express tracks at West 4 St are unusable. Rules: 30 TPH total service must be maintained on both the 6 Av and 8 Av lines.
  20. You never said R68s were retiring; you said that the MTA wishes they could retire the R68s. That's what I meant.
  21. NEXT: no trains can terminate at WTC due to a derailment. Because of flooding, the express tracks at Broadway-Lafayette West 4 St are unusable. EDIT: West 4 St, not Broadway Lafayette. Sorry.
  22. via between Jay St and W 4 St; runs local in Brooklyn terminates at WTC terminates at Chambers St
