On this note, at least on the 80s signs for the 68As – don't know if the 2001 replacements were printed the same way – the MTA, in its infinite wisdom, grouped the readings alphabetically. This makes sense to somebody in a suit, less so somebody working in RTO. Consequently, "Far Rockaway" is nowhere near "Rockaways, Queens" or "Rockaway Park," and "Lefferts" is stuck in the middle. On other orders of rollsigns they wisely placed terminals near each other for the C/R's sake, and in later 68 rolls they combined "Far Rockaway" and "JFK Airport" into "Far Rockaway via JFK Aiport," which made things smoother.

Alright, cool.... That's a better way of putting it then.... Your initial reply (to me) came off rather condescending & repressive.

Fully understandable. It was very badly phrased.

Good to know.... At the same token, don't preach to me about accepting political realities in regards to getting people out of cars then....

Conveying that I should advocate the reduction of car usage as much as possible, to me, is advocating dictating how people should spend their time & money...

I understand the political realities and that most people do not care about the issue or have time. I meant to convey that if you believe that the climate crisis is real, you should support reducing car usage. I was not trying to be patronizing, so please forgive the way I phrased it.

Given your environmental, anti-car talking point, I wouldn't know it.... Sounds like you don't want to overtly state that you want to sell commuters the infeasible, unrealistic pipe dream of a transit utopia.....

If we weren't in a climate crisis, things would be very different. Then I would push for more gradual changes, and try to meet half way. At the current point, trying to meet half way will mean that we will not reduce emissions enough to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, and place all our futures at risk. Rural areas need cars. I am not denying it. Urban areas need to become more walkable, need to be denser, and need to have better transit systems.

AFAIC, it's tantamount to an anti-car talking point & as a public transit advocate, I refuse to go that far left with it.... The staunch/extreme pro-car guys do the same shit when it comes to public transportation....

Honestly, as was stated, what percentage of public transit employees themselves in this city even utilize & rely on mass transit to get to & from work every day? Hell, when I used to take the LIRR in the morning to my old job, I would always notice the sheer amt. of cars in the parking lot inside QV depot.... Tells me all I need to know.

You better beware the restaurateur that wouldn't eat what he/she themselves are out there serving to anyone that dares patronize that restaurant.

If you are fine having the planet be uninhabitable, then sure, accept the political reality that it is hard to get people out of cars. If you want to do something about it, like me, you need to advocate to reduce car usage as much as possible. You do note that I understand that some trips can only feasibly be done by cars.

Driving in NYC shouldn’t be hard, but when you have speed cameras going up left and right and it’s not just only in school zones. In about a few weeks alone I’ve seen cameras go up in Brooklyn in a rapid rate. I understand that lives are at stake. It’s driver responsibility, pedestrian responsibility and it’s biker-Electric scooter responsibility.

When we are in a climate crisis it should be made much harder. Unless we drastically reduce car use, the world will become uninhabitable for my generation and those to come. New York City has great transit options. People should be steered to using them. Speed cameras only ticket people when they go 11 mph over the limit. People hit by a car at 30 mph are 70% more likely to be killed than a car at 25 mph. Cars should be ticketed for going at least 1-2 mph greater than the limit, and the number of cameras should be increased.

    Stop blaming pedestrians. https://www.curbed.com/2020/9/3/21419149/pedestrian-safety-deaths-angie-schmitt

I hate it more than you do brother (I drive everyday). All this vision zero thing is complete nonsense and everything you mention on the 2 previous posts.

The Mayor has not gone far enough with Vision Zero. Driving in NYC should be hard. People's lives are at stake.

  8. I just noticed that the webpage is now up: https://new.mta.info/projects/rutgers

The project will begin with three weeks of work in September. There will be service changes on theandlines every night and all weekend during those three weeks, with additional weeks planned in October and November. Beginning in early 2021, there will be four months of continuous work that will require similar service changes.

    Benefits for you

Our work to fix the Rutgers tunnel and its infrastructure will help make transit more reliable, resilient and accessible, for years to come. The improvements we're making range from protections against future extreme weather events to ADA and circulation enhancements to the East Broadway station.
    Better service reliability

    • New tracks, ties and third rail
    • New fiber optic cable and signaling equipment

    Long-term resiliency

    • Rehabilitated pump room to increase pumping capacity
    • New cable racking system to relocate cables above flood levels
    • Rehabilitated fan plant to improve ventilation

    Better accessibility

    • New accessibility features at East Broadway station include:
    • Raised platform boarding areas
    • Tactile platform edge warning strips
    • Widened staircase from mezzanine to platform for improved circulation

Project Schedule and Impacts to E and F Service
While we’re doing this work, we’ll need access to the tunnel and its track. That means we can't run train service through the tunnel while we're working. On nights and weekends for three weeks beginning September 14 and one week each in October and November, and on nights and weekends for four months in early 2021, there will be no train service At the East Broadway or York St stations. To provide as much subway service as possible, we’ll reroute E and F trains in Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn,
We'll reroute E and F trains nights and weekends during:

    • Weeks of September 14, 21, and 28
    • One week in mid October
    • One week in mid-to-late November

Then, in early 2021 service changes will be in effect for four months.
How E and F service will operate while we work

    • E trains will be rerouted on the A/C line between Jay St-MetroTech in Brooklyn and W 4 Street in Manhattan
    • F trains will be rerouted on the E line between W 4 Street and 36 Street in Queens
    • E trains will be rerouted on the F line between 36 Street in Queens and Delancey St-Essex St in Manhattan, the first/last stop for all E trains in Manhattan. This change allows us to maintain subway service at 2 Av and Delancey St-Essex St.

While we work, the East Broadway and York St stations will be closed to customers. The World Trade Center E station will also be closed during work hours. We'll provide free shuttle bus service at East Broadway and York St so that you can get to a nearby subway station. The Chambers St A/C station and Cortlandt St N/R station will also serve as alternative points of entry into the system.

The uncovered signage reveals continue to get more interesting. As well as the early 1980s Akzidenz signs along some (1) and (6) stations and the blank kiosks along the (R) and (J)(Z) lines, West 4th is now showing a sign last visible in 2008 or 2009. It's a 1990s enamel sign, with a sticker update for the (V) from 2001 as well as a sticker update for the elevator install from 2005. There have been at least two or three different signs installed over that one in the past decade. If anybody is aware of other stations undergoing replacements, let me know. Most of these are still visible, though a few have already been covered up. @Union Tpke

Wow. I personally don't understand why they feel to replace signs that are perfectly readable. If it is very faded and scratched, that is one thing. This is a waste of money at a time the agency doesn't have money to spare.

Anyone have a date when exactly the R179s will be back in service?

Do you really think that if we knew when they would be back in service there would be no mention of a date in the "R179 Discussion Thread"? Relax and be patient.

Here's an idea for de-interling Broadway:

    (N) Coney Island to 96th st/2nd Ave via Sea Beach -> Bridge -> Bway Express (all times)

    (Q) Coney Island to Hillside-179st via Brighton -> Bridge -> Bway Express -> 63rd St -> QB Express (all times)

    (R) Whitehall to Astoria via Broadway Local (all times)

    (W) LL City Hall to 71st-Forest Hills via Broadway local, QB local (rush hours/middays only)

    (E) No changes, except doesn't run at night (use (F))

    (F) Runs via 53rd st tunnel and QB Local to 71st-Forest Hills (all times)

    (J) Jamaica Center to 57th st-6th Ave via 6th ave local (all times)

    (G) Extended to Forest Hills on weekends (optional)

    (M) Metropolitan Ave to Bay Ridge-95th St (all times)

So Queens Blvd looks like this: (F)(W) local, (E)(Q) express. Broadway now has zero merges, 4th Ave in BK gets a more reliable train and the Jamaica line gets full time 6th ave access.

City Hall Lower Level can only fit 8-car trains.

Well that's QBL for you, I wouldn't expect anything less when it comes to that, no one like older trains on QBL.

Railfans like me do, and I really miss 2008-2010, when you had R32s, R40Ms and R42s running on the line with R46s.

What happened was there was a weekend G.O. on the (E) line sending all trains to 179th. There was a large gap in (E) service that evening so they turned the next (F) at 179th into an (E). It just so happened that the next train was an R46.

I wish I could have ridden that. I have never been on an R46 (E), which is something I always wanted to ride on.

The original, original 63 St line was actually supposed to be at 79 St (It would've gone under Broadway on the Queens side). IIRC it was a combination of geotechnical stuff and the fact that Midtown is busier that got it pushed down to 63rd.

As for 61 vs 63, my guess is that the overriding concern here is that 63 St is pretty much directly across from 41st Av in Queens, but none of the other streets south of it have corresponding Queens streets, and they probably wanted to minimize underwater tunnel length.

It was initially going to be 64th Street, but officials at the Rockefeller Institute at 64th Street feared that heavy construction and later train movements so close to the Institute's buildings might have adversely affected delicate instruments at the Institute and change the accuracy of the research being conducted.

IIRC, There were plans to make the (C) 10 cars last year but there hasn't been an update.

Quite frankly, I don't understand this obsession that (MTA) has with keeping the (C) 8 cars. They had a chance to fix it with the R179 order (they ordered it right the first time, with more 10 car units then 8 car units), then reversed the order to the way it was now.

The plan was to make the (C)  10-cars long with the R211 order. Then, it was changed to accelerate it with the postponement of the R32s' retirement. Expect it to become 10-cars long after the R211s arrive.
