  1. ????I'm guessing you've had a bad experience. So have I.

There are people inside who disapprove but they'd be crucified if they squealed.????

????They feel their voice is all but gone and some do view the union as outdated and unfocused on long term solutions. ????️

????Drivers feel inadequate and scapegoated by a system that has also failed them.

????The salaries are superb, but there is a high, emotional price for every corner they can't cut.????

????As a basket case myself, I know trauma when I see it. No one should have a front row seat to some suicide jumpers marriage to the third rail.????⚠️

????NO driver should be sucker punched for driving a bunch of ungrateful punks through a section of town they'd get shot at in.⚰️

????MVMs aren't required to maintain EZP cards. They're costly to maintain and a 15¢ loss is incurred for every $1 extracted. Having them out of the picture lowers maintenance costs & minimizes sabotage. ????????????️

⚒️These can be refilled over the phone or online. Automated systems and online portal available 24/7.????

Weeks? ????It's just a few days (10 at most). There is no replacement fee (usually $1).????️

The form is two pages long. A twelve year old could fill it out. Reduced fare riders have conversion priority and can use their old card up to a fortnight until the balance runs out.

If your card is stolen your balance is yours. I'm advocating for a system that lets you activate any MetroCard bought from a vendor by pairing it's serial with the matching account.

I'm also looking into dual balances, which is only available to reduced fare customers right now.

Bonuses are applied in reverse, meaning I pay $2.62 a ride.

Stubbornness is my nature. It makes me more willing to bring up points others miss.

Mass transit has a history of leaving customers holding an empty bag. You read my tidbit on the tourist end BEFORE you replied to this comment?

Compared to my banter, the MTA is even less considerate.

It seems riders in the poorest sections of the city have the most complaints, yet cause the most trouble and the most damage.

I'm sticking to my guns regardless of how many of you state otherwise because I've seen the cycle at work.

They never represent themselves when it's needed and are a factor in why some stations don't get attention.

If I was forced to paint over graffiti every other day I'd get sick of it too and not keep wasting my brush strokes.

If people complain about losing their MetroCard and how costly it is, looking at options helps. Like EasyPay.

Too often, riders take the doomsday approach at their own expense others.

Sorry if I come across as rash, I just look at things with a varied nature.

Urban transit vs. my suburban Outlook. Maybe that's why I'm insensitive to some concerns you might have.

This doesn't mean I don't share your gripes. It makes me more willing to bring up points others miss.

  2. At the very least they have audible announcements a lot better than when I was coming up with Redbirds and terrible PA systems and roll signs.

    Funny you mention that.

Does anyone else notice a screeching sound on R46 & R68 trains along 53rd St (MANHTN), 7th & Flatbush (B)(Q), and Queensbridge? Is it the walling, the trains, or Platform controller's audio feedback?

Is it possible to transplant R160 Strip maps on R142-R143 cars? They're both Panasonic, or no?

  3. The service change website for the weekend of March 25th now has the (5) to Utica/New Lots instead of the (4) to E180. Looks like the (MTA) woke up and used their brain

However, the strip maps are still mismatched. They light up in the right areas, but they're using cars with (4) strip maps.

Is there a way to label it a (5) but use a (4) strip map, or should they just shut it off? A lot of scratching heads on the (5) today...

  4. 1) Myrtle Ave is giving you the evil eye right about now for that idea.

    2) Car equipment shortages are not the reason why the (G) doesn't run up Queens Blvd anymore. Relaying problems at 71 Avenue with the (M) and (R), along with the demand for Queens - Manhattan service are the concerns. Also, your proposed car assignments make no sense. The (B) already runs eight-car trains exclusively and there are not enough eight-car 160s around to run on the (F).

    3) How are you doubling down on the (E) and (F) service when the Queens Blvd express tracks already at capacity?

I do appreciate the criticism. I figured I miscalculated somewhere.

It helps me learn a little more about the dysfunction.

As long as you include valuable information in your replies, I'm ok with my ideas being shot at. You guys know the nooks & crannies of this system quite well.

I'd say the Swiss cheese holes in my know-how are 40% smaller since I joined. ???? Glad to be here.

  5. No for 3 reasons.

    1. The R would lose access to Jamaica yard, requiring deadhead moves to/from CI.

    2. You'd be cutting service on 60th Street -- a much busier corridor than 63rd.

    3. You'd be adding a merge to the F and N lines.

    You have a point.

    Another suggestion, slightly muted:

Bring the (G) back to Queens Boulevard as an eight car at the expense of shortening (B)(F) cars to eight, and cutting the (M) back to its roost in the West End.

Double down on (F) service along 6 Ave or funnel part time (E) service in the (M)'s place, since the routes exit Manhattan the same way.

  6. Thought exercise: what if we rerouted the (R) via 63rd St?

How about swapping the (N) for the (R)? The (N) can go local to 71 Ave and then local to Parsons & the (R) to Ditmars Boulevard. Then the (F) can skip the local stops.

I make the suggestion because the (F) and (R) manifest is exceedingly long. I also nominate the (R) as Astoria Express.

Is this feasible? I know it won't happen though. Any conductor worth their time knows it takes too (F)n long to cross Queens Boulevard by rail.

  7. "Detroit's"? I've never heard the R32s called Detroits. Brightliners, yes. Detroits, no. They weren't even made in Detroit.

No R68 is 35 years old. The oldest ones on the (D) line began service in 1986.

My mistake. You're right. Thanks for clarifying that.3b0e18c31725348e23067328e0fb9d1a.jpg

  8. That wasn't it... 681 had BOB as its run number.

And btw 681 (the bus on the right) hasn't even seen service yet so it definitely isn't used more than 7175 (the older bus on the left) which has been in service since at least the summer of 2015...

I thought the snow tracks meant something.

How dim of me. I can't believe a cheesy joke went over MY head.

    That's all I joke about...[emoji29]

  9. To answer your question in regards to the R211 bullet sign, according to Wikipedia, "To designate the route, a large LED screen with the route bullet will be displayed at the ends of the train similar to trains with rollsigns; in addition, the route's destination will be displayed above the door on the front. There will also be a few changes in interior appearance. Updated FIND displays would be installed."

    I just finished reading it.

I also went over the footnotes. These were the victims of cost overruns, and there was a tidbit in which Kawasaki & Alstom protested the contract with the warnings that have now amounted to current problems.

  10.

    That was probably a (R) or (W)

Jay St - MetroTech has 5 syllables. I only heard two or three.

Sent from my m8 using Tapatalk

Nope. R179s and R211s will have the same length as the R160: 60 feet, 6 inches

That's good to know. Makes sense because those metrics I gave would require a lengthier platform.

    Oops.

    Another question?

Do the R211 head cars have rollers or an actual digital display for the route symbol?

I ask because I don't take concept art seriously when it comes to the MTA... Like the 4th Avenue "remodelings" that look like refurbished originals.

  11. There are no Bombardier 5-car sets of R160s, there are siemens sets tho.

I believe that's what I saw. The undercarriage utility boxes passing by had their logo.

The R68s aren't being replaced any time soon. It was just crew playing with the signs.

Thanks for clarifying. I noticed a (D) running on a R160 about five weeks ago, and heard one from the opposite uptown platform at DeKalb last week.

    It said,

This is a Manhattan-bound, (?) Local train. The next stop is, (??An?) St.

    ? = Incoherent.

    I could be mistaken. It could've be a (Q).

I was wondering if anybody else saw that. I passed a train of R179s heading north by Howard Beach last Friday that seemed really long while on the A train going to my grandmas at Beach 25th St.

I've heard they added an extra six feet to the car (3' on each end). Maybe those are the ones being tested for gangway doors?

    You mean an Alstom 160 (160A) to a Kawaski 160 (160B)?

The Alstom propulsion 160Bs are always mixed with the Alstom 160As, nothing different between them other than who built it.

Once in a while you'll find a Siemens propulsion 160B paired with a Alstom propulsion 160B or 160A, but it can happen at random.

I answered a question based on details by @DJ_TORO but it was really an answer to yours.

It was a single five car set.

The logos were on a matte label instead of a shiny one (like the Alstom ones are).

I saw it once when I was waiting at Euclid for the next (A) train.

If I do see it again, why not?

What I saw: circa November 2016, on the uptown EXP track

The side displays are crisper, less bold text, and the lighting is at least 7500K (very blue). The technicians were on board with laptops and measuring equipment. The holding poles are the bulge in middle type.

Here we have 3015 signed up as a B train and 3010 signed up as a L train. One of the 4-car sets is parked behind 3010's set, making a "9-car" set lol:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aTgfpLTlUZI

Is it fair to assert some R68 cars could also be replaced?

    The R32 "Detroit's" are fifty [emoji69] , but how old are the R68s? Thirty, thirty-five? [emoji53]

Sent from my m8 using Tapatalk

No non of the NTT's can run together because of different propulsion's. That's why you cannot link a R160 to a R143 and I think R142 and R142A's have a problem if they are linked together. One car would end up pulling the other in a sense because they are incompatible with one another.

Sometimes I notice that the NYCT pairs two different five car sets, because the lighting isn't the same.

Question: can an R160 Alstom 5 car be linked to a Bombardier R160 5 car without issue?

It looks like real time data is now available for Broadway Lines. It's not pictured, but I do beleive (B)(D)(F)(M) trains are being tested...

Transit app's GO feature allows riders to share real times based on GPS location. I made a suggestion on Twitter that conductors should have the app running in their cabs as an interim, zero dollar real time solution.

Getting to know the Hudson Valley one bus stop at a time... ????????

  14.

    .

From what I've seen, most of the time on the local routes, it's just a matter of being let off before the traffic light instead of after the traffic light (and in most cases, the light is red anyway. If only they had that flexibility to do it during the day). Very rarely (if ever) have I seen anybody ask to be let off in the middle of a block in front of their house or something.

Speaking of red lights, I nearly missed my ride yesterday. The operator was ready to floor it but the signal turned red just in time.

  15. I seem to recall someone who posts in the bus threads that portrayed himself as knowledgeable in most things pertaining to transit. Seems like something like this would be rather easy to research. Brooklyn and the Brighton line are relatively easy to find it seems to me.

I also recall someone saying that he joined this community with holes in that knowledge and he sought collaboration to improve it.

If I knew it all then I wouldn't travel. But since I don't, traveling is a great way for me to learn new things and visit new places.

I find my remark concessional and reasonable. Your sarcasm, not so much. [emoji53]

  16. The main entrance to Prospect Park on the eastern end is/was located at the intersection of Ocean and Flatbush Avenues. It was also the exit for the zoo and for Ebbets Field. It was also my home station for fifteen years. The Lincoln Road end is the secondary entrance historically even though most neighborhood residents use that end of the station. Since you seem to be interested in the history of the Brighton line I would advise you look up the timeline of the northern part of the original line. Then your answer should be obvious. Carry on.

I'll give it a go. Guess I'll have to do the link hunting since you didn't post one...[emoji57]

  17.

The problem is that some limited-stop routes have a local portion (on the limited-stop portion, it obviously makes sense, or else people would figure out they can ride the limited and get off between stops, and it wouldn't be much of a limited anymore).

Some/most B/Os are reasonable, though in those situations from what I've seen.

    Like the Bx15?

  18. Request A Stop is only available on the local and express buses. We don't have to honor it on the limited and SBS routes.

    That's good to know. [emoji4]

Honestly, I would only use Limiteds in a hurry.

And often, I'm not in a real hurry.

People who don't take their time planning their commutes ruin everyone else's.

  19. Nah, Brighton Beach (the neighborhood and the beach) is a better descriptor for that station than one of three (four?) streets under the station. Its kind of a similar situation to Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue.

    Good to know.

Another question? Why do they call it Prospect Park instead of Lincoln Road? I noticed the walkways on [emoji578] Brighton line stations still have legacy signage, kinda like the signage at Willet's Point Boulevard.

What do those encircled numbers represent?

  20. I suppose so, but I at least make an announcement. There's also some guys that run local and then suddenly start making limited stops without making any announcements and then they refuse to let passengers off that protest. Some people take any bus that comes, but I generally wait for the M101 because I don't want to make every stop, otherwise it makes more sense to take the subway. That Tuskegee Depot has to be one of the worst in Manhattan.

    I've experienced this before.

But after 10 PM I pressure the operator to ????Request-A-Stop????. I believe the M101/102 do run local at night, but LIMITED service runs within the ????Request-A-Stop???? window.

You should see when an SBS wrapped bus shows up on the LOCAL Bx12. You literally don't know for sure if it's a local or Select until you see it stop at the local stops or it blows past an SBS-only stop.

I've noticed that some 1200 buses from the GH depot have those blue spotlights next to the front route signage. When they're used as SBS they fire blue light intermittently.

  21. While Brighton Beach Avenue does actually run under the Brighton Beach station, it also runs under the Ocean Parkway station, so this supposed "rename" wouldn't be specific enough.

Meanwhile, guess at which station the Brighton Line intersects Coney Island Avenue... That's right, Brighton Beach.

They should call it Brighton 6th Street, after the main exit stair.
