  1. Nah, Brighton Beach (the neighborhood and the beach) is a better descriptor for that station than one of three (four?) streets under the station. Its kind of a similar situation to Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue.

    Good to know.

Another question? Why do they call it Prospect Park instead of Lincoln Road? I noticed the walkways on [emoji578] Brighton line stations still have legacy signage, kinda like the signage at Willet's Point Boulevard.

What do those encircled numbers represent?

  2. I suppose so, but I at least make an announcement. There's also some guys that run local and then suddenly start making limited stops without making any announcements and then they refuse to let passengers off that protest. Some people take any bus that comes, but I generally wait for the M101 because I don't want to make every stop, otherwise it makes more sense to take the subway. That Tuskegee Depot has to be one of the worst in Manhattan.

    I've experienced this before.

But after 10 PM I pressure the operator to ????Request-A-Stop????. I believe the M101/102 do run local at night, but LIMITED service runs within the ????Request-A-Stop???? window.

You should see when an SBS wrapped bus shows up on the LOCAL Bx12. You literally don't know for sure if it's a local or Select until you see it stop at the local stops or it blows past an SBS-only stop.

I've noticed that some 1200 buses from the GH depot have those blue spotlights next to the front route signage. When they're used as SBS they fire blue light intermittently.

  3. While Brighton Beach Avenue does actually run under the Brighton Beach station, it also runs under the Ocean Parkway station, so this supposed "rename" wouldn't be specific enough.

Meanwhile, guess at which station the Brighton Line intersects Coney Island Avenue... That's right, Brighton Beach.

They should call it Brighton 6th Street, after the main exit stair.

  4. Actually, that's not even the (brownM) train! That's the (Z)'s replacement (the Z will be the new name for the Franklin Av Line which will be extended), the (DELTA). The (DELTA) runs at all times between Port Ivory, Staten Island and Brookville Blvd, Queens via the Staten Island Express, Nassau St Line, Jamaica Express, Archer Av Express, and Farmers Blvd Express. The (M) runs its pre-2010 cuts route from Metropolitan Av-South Brooklyn at all times, except it is extended to Coney Island, and runs via Sea Beach instead of West End.

Would the renovations at 121st St (J) have anything to do with that or are they just doing some overdue freshening?

  5. Clearly you're pulling crap out of thin air. In the exact post you quoted, I said "the next X10s were 31 minutes and 38 minutes away". How would I have been able to tell that from BusTime if it didn't work for buses 20+ minutes away? And how come at Castleton & Jewett, it says the next X10s are 2 minutes away, 27 minutes away, and 69 minutes away. Last I checked, 27 & 69 are both over 20 minutes.

If the bus is scheduled to pass by that stop around that general timeframe, but there's no buses heading in that direction, BusTime will say "no buses en-route". That's different from "no buses scheduled" because it means that a bus should be passing along soon, but it's either not coming, or not registering on BusTime.

I'm basing that off a text query I made to a Q50 right after I missed one. That's why I included it in my answer as an example.

I've been accused of that a lot. But I did cite an experience related to why you might have seen "bus not scheduled."

At least I didn't gloat. I stayed on topic. I acknowledge what may irk forum members and I consider it in every reply. Easy now...[emoji29]

  6. I had to use the express bus yesterday. I was texting the X17 stop code to BusTime, and it came back saying "No buses scheduled at this time". I'm thinking "Is BusTime malfunctioning or something?". Then I remember it's a Saturday schedule, and the last X17 gets downtown around 9:20-9:30 or so. (And of course, like a typical Saturday, the next X10s were 31 minutes and 38 minutes away. I caught the first one, but I had a hunch the second one was going to pass us while on Staten Island, which it did).

I'm glad I wasn't returning during rush hour. I probably would've been bypassed by the X10/17 buses that were running on 30 minute headways. (Which is a general problem with the Saturday schedule: Not enough rush hour service, and X17 service ends way too early).

Hopefully when they look into running a separate Friday schedule, they can add President's Day to the list of holidays where it takes effect Either that, or run some of the heavier rush hour lines like the X5, X12, and X22 on top of (improved) Saturday service on the X1/10/17.

If the bus is more than twenty minutes between stops it does that

If you do a query for a BM4 on a Sunday, or for a Q50 right after you saw it leave.

  7. I'm not going to elaborate on this any further. I'm on this forum to contribute my experiences and to tell my story with regards to public transit.

    Shocking development....

I wouldn't be surprised if he's one of these "freeloaders" he's exalting himself above...

I don't exactly buy this crock of bullshit about passing up buses with broken fareboxes either... It's one thing to pass up a crowded bus before ever noticing (or knowing) a bus has a broken farebox - but to have readers believe you're waiting for a bus, your bus arrives, you attempt to board a bus, you attempt to pay your fare with a metro', you see that you're unable to, and you do an about face, off the bus???? And in a lot of cases, the b/o waves you onto the bus !

I don't know about you, but I aint boo boo the fool......

    How dare you.

My EasyPay card is my pride and joy. I may be bombastic, but I am not shallow. Frugal, but no cheapskate. The service sucks, but I do practice what I preach. I pass by dozens of transit police every day. That kind of hypocrisy combined with my posting habit would have already sold me out.

I don't cut corners with my MetroCard.

  9.

Bee Line uses artics unsparingly, so it's still not a viable defense..... It's almost like you're implicating that every single trip on every route in Westchester county are being used to capacity - which of course isn't the case....

Our buses do hit the high water mark. Have you ever rode the #40 to or from Wakefield in the afternoon? That bus passes by several colleges so I can assure you, we deal with crowds.

We have several buses that pass by high profile locations that pack the buses rather quickly. The #20 passes by several shopping centers, a subway and a casino. Afternoons those buses are filled solid, even on a Sunday.

In fact, that's largely fhe reason the #20 has the most packed Sunday schedule.

Unlawful might have been harsh for terms. Nonetheless it is uncomfortable, for both the riders and the operator. My concern has been unruliness.

Regarding the fare box question, my answer was meant for as I boarded. I simply u-turn off the bus and wait for the next one.

  10. The thing I'm wondering is where do you get the money to pay your fare. Clearly, you have nothing to do all day except ride buses and trains and boast about your travels, I'm wondering how you turn that into income.

It hurts to swipe, trust me. I'm just more willing to make a few sacrifices for my monthly.

I value my monthly in a higher regard than my Visa card. My transit budget was always my highest priority after my phone bill. I'm very frugal with my meager income...

You brought up seating/standing capacity to address a remark about low ridership? [emoji38] [emoji38]

That was because someone mentioned my suburban origins and that's the posted capacity for Neoplans (articulated buses used by Bee Line).

I'm more jaded than that. I just find the after school crowding obnoxious and dangerous. These brats are walking vitriol.

If everyone paid their fare I wouldn't even complain. It's not commercially sustainable to have crowds that don't pay.

This is an argument for overcrowding.... There is a difference.

Someone like you that's boarded 50 million buses & trains 50 million times over should know this....

Either way it's subjective, but being a little fair to this guy, he said crowding, not crowds..... Only a fool would believe buses aren't meant to handle *some* level of crowding (i.e., crowds).... I don't think pokemon guy here is that far off the deep end....

You brought up seating/standing capacity to address a remark about low ridership? [emoji38] [emoji38]

My concern is about overcrowding and how the resulting environment causes ridership to shy away.

These operators are human beings and I do think some of these freeloaders miss that point that the money comes from somewhere.

Paying less will not make the fare go down. In fact, it punishes us all by increasing the deficit (currently $38 billion).

  12. I think he's from the 'burbs, where 90 minute headways and 7 people per bus are pretty much the norm.

Our 'burb buses can seat 59 and stand 19, given that NYCT buses are smaller in headway.

I'm quite tolerant despite being an upstater, but some riders push their luck.

How would you know a bus has a broken fare box before you get on?

They usually cover it with a flimsy Xfer slip.

How would you know a bus has a broken fare box before you get on?

And yes buses are designed to handle crowds. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous... Of course there are loading guidelines.

Those guidelines are often disregarded. The crowds are unnatural even for the jaded.

    ???? Eric Shields | #MassTransitHonchkrow ????

    THE Hudson Valley's essential Fare-blazer ????

  13. Not really. The buses are designed to handle large crowds. This is nothing for them. The issue here (and the stupid part) is that a route design to ferry large numbers of people from the airport to the subway has fare machine arrays that can't handle large numbers of people buying tickets (which is stupid in and of itself).

I can't wait until we've eradicated the MetroCard and replaced it with a smartcard system. Then we can have real POP and all door boarding on every bus route...

Not crowding by freeloaders. Lately, I've been passing up buses with broken fare boxes. I don't care how bad it is outside. At least I can breathe. People will pile drive a bus with no farebox in inclement weather.

No bus is designed to handle crowding. It's unlawful, actually. Buses, like eateries and auditoriums, have an allowed amount before it becomes a safety concern.

  14. Even if NICE bus made connections reliably, this easily sounds like a two-hour-plus commute.

I did that once. During the NY Transit Museum bus festival, I did an all bus ride from Co-op City to Far Rockaway. I got to Mott Avenue by sunset. My longest wait times were at the Lower East Side (B39) & West Harlem (M10).

Gun Hill's maintenance is mediocre at best, and their cleaners are apparently nonexistent. Their 2003 artics look ready to go now, let alone 1023 and 1027.

They probably don't run those two buses in everyday service.

Those buses are rotting in the Eastchester Depot with missing bumpers, popped tires & dented sides. I pass by every day.

  15. Quick question: How do I report a bus driver?

I usually tweet about it. Include the Bus Lot number, Control ID, Bus route & cardinal direction. Use hashtags to classify what kind of complaint you have.

    I use #fareevasion, #rowdiness, #overcrowding #buzzed #Xfergiveaway & #gotpunked, to name a few.

    Buses never lie...

  16. 1.Impossible because the only places to have (space for) more than two tracks are Classon Av and east of and including Bedford-Nostrand. Both are far from being any use at the moment (besides layovers and short turns at Bedford-Nostrand), let alone be any use to the (E).

    2. The (V) was asleep when/if the (G) ran on QBL.

thanks for clarifying that. Another question - taking note of the signage at DeKalb Avenue, did 2nd Avenue play a role in allowing (M) service on the West End center track?

  17. Second

    Avenue

    Subway

Oh. I feel so dumb... XD

    Explain yourself.

There are center tracks at some of the (G) stations that are currently disused. I believe you could snake the (E) through that section.

Out of curiosity, when the (G) operated via Queens Boulevard, what was the (V) doing other than 6th Avenue?

  18. Next:

A fire inside Bloomingdales knocks out power to the entire area underneath.  The 53rd, 60th and 63rd tunnels and the Lexington Avenue Line and SAS are ALL affected by this.

Instead of suspending the (E), route it through the Crosstown Express Portion, terminating at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn Street station by re-utilizing the "ghost" platform.

Lexington Avenue service should be broken into two sections:

the (4) between Woodlawn and 125th Street [terminal on Uptown side], and between 42nd Street & Utica Avenue.

the (5) between Dyre Av & 125th Street [terminal and rerun on Downtown side].

the (6) between Pelham Bay & 125th Street [terminal on uptown side].

The (7) would have to connect passengers between Times Square and Queensboro Plaza with the (N) train broken between Times Sq & Stilwell Avenue, and the 31st Street shuttle.

the (R) can terminate at Queens Plaza and customers who need Manhattan should Xfer at 74th Street to use the (7) for the above scenario (since Queensboro Plaza and Queens Plaza are disjointed).

    BTW, what is SAS?

I think I missed a detail that might ground this roleplay.

  19. Downtown

    (D) Via (A) to west 4th street

    (cool.png Via (C) to west 4th street

    (E) Via The (F) to West 4th Street

    Uptown

    (D) Via (A) to 59th street

    (cool.png Via (C) to 59th street

    (E) Via (F) to 63rd/Lex then regular routing

Suspend all (C) Service in Manhattan and Brooklyn send the (F) to Euclid and the (G) to Coney Island

That kinda sounds like the past month's worth of reroutings. What a way to start off. :-)

  20. It's that 10 MPH limit because of the track condition, design or maybe because of entering and leaving an ATO zone?

There was service there before for some years and I'm sure it's role in that junction was intended for revenue service. Couldn't some upgrades to the track pull that limit up a tad? Super elevation adjustments etc? Is this radius as tight some other further west? Alabama? Cypress?

    Just curious.

something happened earlier this week that caused service to truncate to Myrtle - Wyckoff Av's. Not sure if it's related.

When I was on the (J) earlier this September, I noticed half done paint jobs on those flyover track hulls. It could be that they're still making finishing touches.

I was under the impression it was for the (L) shutdown. I just looked up the (M) reconstruction project didn't think about it duh! I think the service plan was for that and not the tunnel shut down honestly.

Not a half baked idea though. The (M) can continue to serve Bushwick and now East NY as the viaduct gets torn down. I don't think they plan to refurbish the structure. Likely why they're asking some tenants to move as it may get messy.

I do recall that they're working on the viaduct as a precursor in preparing for the (L) shutdown. Spare stock will bring the (G)(M) and even the (C) to 10-car sets.

I actually suggested running a (V) to/from Canarsie to Queens Plaza or 71st Ave during the shutdown back when the MTA first announced it. But current space constraints on the 6th Ave local tracks would mean the (V) could only run on a very limited basis during rush hours and middays which would limit its usefulness. And the (M) line in Bushwick/Ridgewood will need the boost in service more so that it can absorb the displaced (L) riders who board in the middle stretch of that line.

they could return the (M) to its Bay Parkway terminus. Those express tracks on the West End are currently disused. They could hitch the (V) at Queens Plaza and bring the (G) back to Queens Boulevard.

And once the (L) shutdown is underway the extra cars can supplement (F) and (G) service. The (F) would be able to go full express btwn Jay Street & Kings Hwy while the (G) accomodates local riders.

This is assuming work on Culver Line station renewals is complete. Some (F) provide PT service to Kings Hwy so why not pass that to the (G)?

  21. The (7) to Westchester is ridiculous

It would never happen even if halfheartedly approached.

At the Westchester Hearing someone suggested the MTA take on Liberty Lines and NICE.

Was I right to cringe? Would you (given existing irresponsibilities the MTA is charged with?

P.S. how do you parse text to show the MTA logo? i'm curious

Erm, I see that now. maybe a Woodhaven/Cross Bay Blvd Line should be built connecting the Archer Av Line to the Rockaways a bit more directly. Also this would involve literally making the (E) into a loop line.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That would be easier to achieve using the crosstown line, which does have a dormant express track. Your prior suggestion is simply another target for hurricane weather or spending.
