  1. Good thing Donald wasn't around when you took your hearing test!
  2. Have lived in: New York, NY Providence, RI Have been to US (major cities/well known, not including small cities or towns): New York, NY New Haven, CT Albany, NY Providence, RI Boston, MA Philadelphia, PA Orlando, FL Baltimore, MD Honolulu, HI Washington, DC Newark, NJ Newark, DE Jersey City, NJ Hoboken, NJ Wilmington, DE Portland, ME Warwick, RI Nantucket, MA Been to Foreign: Vienna, AUT Salzburg, AUT Zagreb, CRO Ljubljana, SLO Bratislava, SVK
  3. try Bose but don't buy anything until you see on the box. Many of their products are made in the USA but be on the lookout for those that are "engineered in the USA" and "Made in China" so that you don't buy one of those. That information will be on the box of the set you buy, so just make sure to pick an American made one out.

  4. And length was in response to the title, main topic, and first post of this thread...
  5. OK here are the measurements: A 207th to Far Rock - 32.29 miles F 179th to Coney - 26.94 miles 2 241st to Flatbush - 25.56 miles
  6. I have the mileage for the top 3, I can post it tomorrow...like I said earlier it's A->F->2
  7. A is the longest, followed by the F, followed by the 2. I don't have the rest at hand.
  8. Ah yes, the obligatory part of the year where some new jack decides to "call me and INDman out" and tell me they know more about my life than I do. Sounds to me like someone can't handle a simple difference of opinion in another thread, got his panties in a bunch, and now decides to try and get all personal about it. Here's a fun fact, this is a hobby for me. Which means I learn things and I apply them. By not being a duche bag in real life I'm qualified to operate subway cars for free nearly whenever I want, completely legally and within all governing rules and codes of conduct in some place (hint: not NYCT). And I've made a lot of very good friends out of it too. Do you even know why "trolley museums" saved subway cars in the first place? All the cars at those places would have been scrapped if not for that. And as much as the cars in NYC still are a lot of fun for people to ride, good luck getting to operate them if you're not a TA employee. But at the "trolley museums?" Operable for anyone who meets certain minimal restrictions and has a small amount of money. Lots of people here at the forums have done it...they see the value in what we do. No one's gone back unhappy. But yet those who haven't been there seem to find it quite necessary to bash something they know nothing about. As for my personal business, it's my personal business so I choose to keep it off the forum rather than debate it with you here. As someone who has been gainfully employed since he was 17 years old, including through college where I got and completed my degree, I don't have to explain shit to you. Anyone who knows me in real life will speak to my character so I don't really care what the internet lemmings out there like you think. As far as I'm concerned it's actually a good thing...every time you post something stupid and ignorant like this, it keeps other stupid and ignorant people off my ass that want to learn more about trains and are too lazy to do it themselves. The people that are alright know better than to take anything you are saying seriously anyway. Anyone who reviews my comments on this site will see that whenever someone asks a serious question I take the time to write a serious answer, off topic excluded of course.
  9. The R10s were not lemons. They were just never meant to run that long, and were not properly maintained throughout their service life.
  10. OK to square the confusion: There are "school cars" that are stored in yards and used as classrooms. They are not operated by students in the class, they are just used for classroom space to teach them the course. The course, is called "schoolcar". When the class is ready to begin learning using real equipment, the instructors take them out with actual subway trains to practice. These cars are also referred to as "schoolcars" and do not take on passengers obviously since their crews are practicing under supervision. When INDman says the "Schoolcars" are going, he is referring to the ones in yards which are used as classrooms. However "schoolcar" as a course will continue to be taught. And part of that course will still involve practicing on real equipment.
  11. ah yes the old 59th Street/Lex...still remember that from as a kid...
  12. sure is...and with the help of a few other preservationists, we'll hopefully keep it in good condition and running for a long time
  13. Ah OK, that helps. At the very end (around the time the photo was said to be taken in Dec 1987), only the GE cars were on the . They did not mix them with other 26/29's by that point IINM, but they did mix them with unrebuilt R33ML cars. This means that car must be an R17. R33's got their overhauls later (86-90), so perhaps a few of the cars on the train are R33's. But the one in the foreground would be an R17.
  14. What's the date of the photo? Actually the R26-R29's as delivered had the lowered number plates. They weren't raised until sometime near GOH. Of course if you're going to rely on nycsubway, that's where things can get hairy because there are not many photos taken between 1983 and 1990 on that site. Looking underneath the cars, I can barely make out what appear to be motor generator sets underneath the car. So this tells me it's either an R17 or an R26-R29 that hasn't been through GOH. During GOH the 26/28/29's got their MG sets replaced with modern inverters. That's why the date could be important. If this was early 1988, for example, that would tell you the cars had to be R17's because by '88 GOH had been finished on the 26/8/9s, so they'd all have inverters. End result: inconclusive
  15. Not the only reason but nothing that will get posted here or said to anyone that I do not know personally. And nothing "bad" so that all the rumor mongers reading this don't go start making things up. As an aside, note the middle BU in that 3 car consist is of a much older (pre 1900) vintage than the others. Looks like it might even be a 200 series car.
  16. IMO nothing looks good with graffiti on it. Especially not corporate graffiti.
  17. Some old time favorite photos of mine (the GOOD SHIT): And finally something a LITTLE more recent...
  18. It's very rare something comes along I want to ride or photograph. Most of what I want to do involves working on cars. A lot of railfans get into trouble because they don't know how to carry themselves and several are just mopey idiots who blatantly break the law and the TA's rules in pursuit of their "hobby" I stay away from trips organized by railfans because they are always the same stupid foamy shit. The official trips and special services are better, but it's the non railfans that are the reason why.
  19. Same I did the solo thing for a LONG time. Never even touched a so called "fan trip" until the holiday train in 2007. Railfanning is overrated. The hobby is inclusive to a fault. Certain people's boorish behavior is allowed just because people feel sorry for them. I don't believe in making excuses for people, so I hang out with who I want to. And it's never about the trains, it's about the people. Anyone that knows me can attest to that. There are a lot of opportunities foamers miss out on as a result of their behavior. Their loss, not mine.
  20. I always enjoyed riding trains as a kid. The opportunity to get involved in preservation and learning about transporation years ago (which was better) was simply too much to pass up. I get to run R9's, Lo-V's, SMEEs, (all LEGALLY) what more could I ask for? I get to be the reason why a lot of them are running. I get to have the ear of a lot of important people. I get to coordinate a bunch of different things in this hobby. Pretty effing cool. Opportunities are there if you want them, pursue them, and get to know the right people. Or you can just drool over car moves
  21. Nope no pizza in NH/Staven/Branford at all...just apizza if that's your thing. Tolli's is supposed to be pretty good for apizza (you pass it on the way to Goody's) but getting J to stop there is probably as hard as getting me to do any work on buses up there (aka not gonna happen). If you're interested next time you drive up, I'll try it too...
  22. Brooklyn: Knapp Pizza by Ave X, Spumoni Gardens by 86 St., Tony's Famous by the Fulton Mall at Boerum Bronx: Tony and Val's north of 242nd Manhattan: Pizza Park 66th and 1st, La Mia 76th and 1st, Mimi's 84th/Lex Queens: Mazara's on Metropolitan and 72nd
  23. Ahem...Not true AT ALL by judging SOME of the people in this hobby. They could be the last man left on earth and those "pretty girls" will either be forced to turning into lesbos, nuns, or killing themselves. Like I said You can daydream all you want but some of us prefer to make our conquests in the real world...where we don't need to use our hand...
  24. Some of us prefer to live in the real world. You should try it. It's better here. You can "fantasy map" your way to retirement age and till the tips of your fingers have worn themselves off from typing too much and that's not going to make anything happen, it's still a waste of time...you'll put hours into drawing something that fellow foam...I mean railfans...will look at for 2 seconds and comment on. Sounds pretty dumb to me.
