  1. One is clearly private/personal communication. Professional commmunications between personnel within a public organization is something else.
  2. It's probably what you think it is. You have one wall running down the center of the train lengthwise and the seats are facing outwards. You could practically dangle your feet off the train exposing yourself to the hazards of traffic. An inverted person by analogy has all the organs on the outside.
  3. Poor people are often the victims. They have less choices, less power, and less leverage to get what they want. For example: Macy's is laying off 2,500 workers and closing a few store down. I can tell you who won't be laid off. http://money.cnn.com/2014/01/08/news/companies/macys-job-cuts/ And this is one of the few reasons they deserve any assistance from the government/charity. If they still can't help themselves, I don't feel anything more should be done to better their lives.
  4. Wall Street for sure. It's the biggest and longest running scam on the planet. 90% of investors lose their money in the financial markets and yet the industry continues to peddle its services for its own gain. Wall Street firms aren't there to help anyone retire rich; they are there to profit off of your money. As for the investors who win out, they are the firms themselves or very skilled/lucky investors who make their profits when the other investors are suckered into losing positions. These winning investors then pay a paltry 20% capital gains tax (which used to be 15%). I'm very well aware of the irony of my statements being an investor myself…
  5. This morning I was on a train that had to dwell at 9 Avenue for about 15 minutes because of a stalled train up ahead. The moron train conductor didn't close the door for the first 7 minutes or so and then discharged the train and closed the door only to announce that the train was back in service after 5 minutes. At least 1 ran express from Bay Parkway to 9 Avenue per platform announcements, but it never caught up before the traffic jam was cleared.
  6. Family Guy was never funny. The Simpsons used to be funny. Kill both shows and start fresh. The jokes get old.
  7. Just make sure it's sanitary. Don't "eat" it if it's too salty. That's indication that it hasn't been "prepared" well.
  8. In the end though, it all boils down to a few pieces of critical equipment.
  9. I take that and generalize it. Anything your girl can do that you can't do is a point against you. And this is probably the wrong place to make this statement, but I make it my goal in life to hoard every skill learnable on the planet. Girls love capable men.
  10. Isn't Sea Beach's "test track" about to become a revenus track some time in 2014? They are taking one local track out of service to renovate stations from 8 Avenue to Bay Parkway. Then stop replying. None of what you three have been posting pertains to R179.
  11. Yesterday and just 5 minutes ago, these comments wasted my server storage's precious bytes, my mobile data, and my time and attention.* * I get instant e-mail notifications of comments to threads I subscribe to.
  12. Does anyone still burn optical discs (CD, DVD, BD)? The latest optical disc standard, BDXL, has been out for over a year already but has almost no market presence despite being superior to the older BD in every way. Thus, the 100GB blank discs have been very expensive at $40 a pop. And the 128GB discs are nowhere to be found. So it comes as a surprise to me when I read this: Is Sony & Panasonic’s 300Gb Optical Disc The Seed For 4K Blu-Ray?
  13. I doubt it. It leaves out several crucial ideas which have been the hallmark of his works. (Check post history to see what I mean.)
  14. It's under 2C on page 7 in the report (http://www.mta.info/capconstr/sas/documents/final_summary_report.pdf) if anyone else is wondering where that was found.
  15. All of the new deep-bore tunnels, however, seem not to have this problem. Maybe there's a certain depth at which this becomes not a problem, or real estate rights are superceded by city/state/federal rights. The extension's curves go right under private property.
  16. Service is going to suck for people between Broadway–Lafayette Lafayette and Jay Street during late nights from December 2 to 6… The runs with the from West 4 Street to Jay Street–Metrotech, but the Manhattan Shuttle only runs between Broadway–Lafayette Street and East Broadway necessitating 2 transfers (involving the shuttle, , and ) in either direction.
  17. At Canal Street (on the Brooklyn-bound platform leading to the Manhattan Bridge) one doesn't need to venture to the edge to see. In fact, much can be seen even by standing behind the orange line.
  18. Agreed. They could have put the red LEDs elsewhere. They just have to be showing anyhow. And for us passengers, it's difficult to tell what train is coming when the sign is so tiny. From one end of the platform, I would need wait until the train has made its way down two-thirds of the platform before being able to squint and see what train it was. Anyone who needs to make split-second decisions based on the train that's arriving is pretty much screwed.
  19. Count me in too. I'm more of a narcissist than he is.
  20. Dang. This sucks. And I have to get my luggage from Coney Island all the way to the JFK Airport during the outage for a 2-week vacation.
  21. The issue would be connecting the tunnels for switches. While a cut-and-cover structure could be modified to merge and/or join tunnels (such as what's been done with the 63 Street connector), bored tunnels don't have the flexibility.
  22. If I didn't have to guarantee that I would be awake by 9am tomorrow morning (instead of being at a police station all night), I would be willing to go through a bit of trouble. It was the perfect opportunity to do the talk-down routine. In case anyone was wondering, the guy was "white"—probably Latino as he did have purely European features. If I get trouble, it's usually from black kids.
  23. In the blink of an eye, words spilled from a guy's mouth: "Chinese boy you got 50 cents on you? Motherf**ker." That wasn't even enough time to reach for my pockets to throw change at him. Did he need that 50 cents or was he showing resentment that I looked rich?
