  1. The is luckily not too far from other options where the service is out. There is the to Manhattan for those too far from Broadway Junction. The is also about 0.7 miles or less from the stations where the service will be out. Not too bad of a walk. For those whose destination is Clinton–Washington Avenues, the runs express and so the walk from Atlantic Avenue–Barclays Center will still be 0.7 miles. For those whose destinations are Manhattan-bound the also covers all of the areas that the rerouted Manhattan-bound trains won’t serve from High Street–Brooklyn Bridge to Chambers Street. The ones in a touch spot are those out in Canarsie, Starrett City, and Spring Creek.
  2. Being able to hire from within is a luxury. Companies only get the necessary loyalty and dedication if they’ve not treated their workforce like disposable adversaries working for slave wages. Judging by the contemporary discussions about labor, companies haven’t been doing that. And if you treat someone like crap, don’t expect them to give the best effort steering the company to great places from high places. I don’t know what goes on within the MTA rank and file, but the media would have the public believe that the MTA has it tough being a political hacky sack for the city/state government, a money bag for the contractors/workers, and a punching bag for the riding public. I don’t see much spoken about those who actually move the trains or coordinate their movements, but it’s hard to believe that there are no candidates with relevant experience to draw from to lead the subway arm of the MTA.

  4. You could already do that in stations and while not in tunnels. The real game changer is not having to lose connectivity while between stations or transitioning to a tunnel segment. I’m sure the rest of you know the experience: web page is loading while the tunnel mouth is looming ahead. Will the page load before the signal goes dark?
  5. There is always homeless man by the emergency gate at Canal Street (Centre Street entrance). He holds the door open while shaking his cup for money. Occasionally, some homeless white guy is also there asking for 50 cents (next to the MetroCard vending machines). Would be hilarious if some cops set up shop at the junction where the two flights of stairs meet. Let the homeless guy hold the emergency gate open and arrest the stream of farebeaters coming in.
  6. As funny as that sounds, sorry to hear about your experience. Sounds like it would have been a great experience to me seeing that there were consequences.
  7. Nothing to do with subways or tunnels, but have you considered comparing the volume of water that inundated the city in 2012 and the measly volume that all of the combined tunnels (active and inactive) can hold?
  8. About 30 minutes from West Williamsburg (almost Greenpoint) to Chinatown by Citibike. The subway would actually be competitive with a bicycle if the Second System provided for a built-out station at South 4 Street and a Worth Street line connecting to it.
  9. Signal problems… pulling into track 6 from the West End/Sea Beach side in service… going back out via West End. train also just pulled out on track 4 via Sea Beach. Not a great day for folks east of Dahill Road (the street separating Sea Beach and Culver)
  10. How is this possible? If the trains are stopping at and then turning at Bergen Street, trains cannot pass. Did they rehabilitate the lower level that nobody knew about?

  12. No switches south of Astoria Boulevard to turn extra trains, and no redundant connection between 2 Avenue and Broadway (local tracks) to avert the costlier alternative of routing trains via 6 Avenue…
  13. Far from my original intention. I intended to highlight the track set-up—how the MTA takes the absolute laziest way to connect new lines to existing ones. The other examples are the Dyre Avenue branch which connects only to the local tracks and the plan to connect the Queens bypass only to the local tracks east of Forest Hills. Something changed between the IND and the MTA. The IND often avoided hard-wiring connections such that only one option was available and avoided creating breaks in existing track to shoehorn in another connection. One of the few places where the MTA made better engineering decisions was the 63 Street-Queens Boulevard connector, though they still cannibalized half of he pocket track to make way for a ramp.

  16. They did the bare minimum with the overhead countdown clocks. “Let’s install one countdown clock in this station—preferably eclipsed by some other structure so it can only be seen from some specific angle—and call it a day.”
  17. Another potential problem that I think gets overlooked: the MTA will cut corners à la Rockaway connection. See this crappy setup? I suspect Astoria would get the same if not worse with the branching option.
  18. The branching proposal is like taking the worst of each option. Less throughput to/from the airport, less throughput to/from Ditmars Boulevard and Astoria Boulevard, an extra fork/merge for 2 Broadway routes… the only happy campers are those between Queensboro Plaza and 30 Avenue. They would be guaranteed 2 services unless the MTA figures out a way to make an for Astoria.

  20. I remember once an terminated at Kings Highway right after another had some the same thing. Because the wait had been so long, those headed to the stops beyond were pissed and formed an angry mob. Then supervision got the back on track to Coney Island. But not before the next Coney Island-bound was already pulling into the station. Right now should be one of those moments… the next to Coney Island is 7 stations away. The last one is 7 stations ahead. EDIT: Hmm… interesting. They automatically made this Kings Highway-bound Coney Island-bound and made the train behind us run express from Jay Street to Kings Highway. EDIT: there is also a kid hanging off the back of the train. He might die since the train is about to round a curve into West 8 Street. Who do I contact? EDIT: They got off at West 8 Street. There were 3 of them apparently.
  21. My favorite 💖 spot to stand when I am in a train that alternates door opening sides between stations. Unlike the to/from Brooklyn, I cannot stand in the same spot for the majority of my ride on most other trains. Among the entire subway system, the other routes where this is possible: between Flushing–Main Street and Queensboro Plaza (Queens-bound) between Flushing–Main Street and Grand Central–42 Street (Manhattan-bound) between Atlantic Avenue–Barclays Center and 125 Street (Bronx-bound) between Bowling Green and 125 Street (Brooklyn-bound) between Pelham Bay Park and Grand Central–42 Street between 9 Avenue and Bedford Park Boulevard (Bronx-bound) between Jamaica–179 Street or Jamaica–Van Wyck and Lexington Avenue–53 Street (via 2 Avenue) between Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue and Lexington Avenue–63 Street (via Sea Beach) between Coney Island–Stillwell Avenue and 72 Street Those are the routes where you can literally sleep standing up against the door for a good stretch of time.
