  1. Nope, not a cowboy. I just recognize a good train and know what to do with it. I don't take any chances with something I'm not sure would stop safely within station limits.
  2. I dont think they wanted to build a rather lengthy transfer (think the fabled PABT Times Sq transfer tunnel in length), but rather have passengers go right downstairs and find the tail end of a . Remember that 2Av is two blocks away from Lexington, not one. Lex to 3rd isn't as long as 3rd to 2nd, but its not like its a city block either. With a transfer tunnel that long, it wouldn't dent the Lex ridership coming out of the Bronx one bit. But yes, older plans just had a station at 125&2nd and on into the Bronx with no Manhattan terminus entirely. The SAS was always about the wealthy, anyway.
  3. Yes, it was never said that every trunk would get a FASTRACK setup. It may happen further on in the future, but at the moment no.
  4. Well of course FASTRACK supercedes any other GO's on the line, and nothing else would run on the line that would cause service diversions.
  5. In sheer braking power, 68A -> 160 Alstom -> 160 Siemens -> 68. The greatest difference of notice is between the Alstom and Siemens sets. 68A are also faster cars than 68, and have among the fastest units in the SMEE (There are some R32 cars up there too, but the problem is because of the married pair setup, its difficult to figure out which pairs are faster than others, and its nearly impossible and purely chance to get all the fast pairs on a single consist). I had a good motor today 5076 = 53mph bet 34th - W4, 47mph going into Newkirk s/b (not down the hill), 48mph at Sheepshead Bay s/b. The latter two numbers are on flat track. Fastest 68A Ive ever had. I wish I had it going back north, might have had a shot at 55 n/b at Newkirk.
  6. Just remember, the may be completely unaffected as it's only a few intervals after 10.
  7. Lets see how many fannies run out there on the overnight to ride a rare WPR-Flat that's express on the midnites. (sees the foam coming)
  8. Well it makes sense. Well the IRT is for all intents and purposes normal. The and have no change. Instead of confuse all people all night by having a "red" train go down the east side the whole night, just swap terminals for the night and send the all the way down. In the past when the has run all night (back in the days of trains going around the SI ferry loop), it has been express all night, with the and local. In all likelihood it is like that again, to compensate for the increased time it takes to get to the east side to get a train to Flatbush. I just hope/wish that shuttle bus has some service to 149-GC, but I doubt it.
  9. 1. The switches north of West 4 from 3-1 tks are not commonly used because of the wheel detectors. All switching will probably be done at 34-6 (between 42-34). As with the , the last train wouldn't have left the area by 10pm sharp, it was more like 1030. 2. Overall train frequency really doesn't matter, what matters more is the the amount of trains that have to be diverted and where they will be once the diversions begin. With that said... 2a. S/B © - 2 or 3 trains. Based on the IRT Lex, the idea is to start diverting after 10, allowing those trains in the zone after 10 to complete their trip through. Taking the last two trains off, the track will be clear of © service by 2230, and therefore will probably not end early. 2b. N/B © - 4 trains. The track will clear of © by 2230. 3. There are 7 trains that still have to go thru 6Av in both directions after 10 (for those who will fact check me, the first one n/b will get ahead of the first diverted 8Av train so it doesn't count). Things will be tight the first half an hour with those last couple of ©'s that got to go through. The 53rd St corridor is roughly on 5-6 min headway in the 10pm hour. Add in the 10min headway on the at that hour and the last couple of 's that gotta go through, and things will still be fine. The problem comes when the service is added in, as its still quite frequent until 11. Switching issues at 2Av for the will be a pain as well. However, all this is nothing a well written suppliment cant solve that will adjust the leaving times.
  10. It was a stabbing downstairs, the whole area was cardoned off as a crime scene. When someone hears "police investigation", people automatically assume 12-9, and often even tell others as if they knew for sure. Back shortly after 9/11 and during key holidays during the year (except New Years Eve/Day), "police investigation" meant bomb scare.
  11. The R160 Alstoms brake well, allowing the T/O to operate them very aggressively. It is not uncommon to come in full blast and brake just before the C/R board going around 35.
  12. Some GO's are indeed running. I'm off today so I'm not sure which ones. By the way, the five inches represents roughly the amount of snow needed to cover the running rails from the ties.
  13. Yup, its back today. Apparently the biggest internal change they made from last winter is a new day by day basis when it comes to calling plans. Before, what was called at 11AM Friday was in effect until 11AM Monday, which was a big waste of money if what was forecasted didn't pan out or ended early in the weekend (like this storm did). Now, everything's on a day by day basis with extra hiring techniques in place for weekend. It will also allow for GOs to run the second (or first) half of the weekend. So in retrospect with these new rules, its no longer the large gamble it was seen in the past.
  14. TA does not have enough pairs (with sufficient spares) to run full-length trains.
  15. I still see luggage that doesn't roll well when filled to capacity (not overstuffed).
  16. Only station that's a bit out the way is High St, and although York isn't that far, it's kind a cumbersome getting on the other side of the bridge supports. So far, we are unsure if they will decide to end the ( and © early, or just wait until the last one goes by, as the headways are fairly high around 10. And remember, the is still running at that hour with the . I do feel for those coming in from PABT, though. Have to slug their luggage through that famous underground passage.
  17. I was told the FASTRACK for the 8Av segment is in March, from 59th-CC to Jay.
  18. Just to let you know, there STILL is no strike threat, it hasn't even been discussed among the inner circles of the membership.
  19. Well, its all habit for us T/O's. I find myself punching at locations I don't (or shouldn't) have to (school car teaching says when in doubt, punch, can't hurt). But don't think the punch actually did anything tangible during these times.
  20. I have yet to go out there. I gotta get out there one of these days.
  21. I think it was once proposed to close 18th Street and it was shot down?
  22. Well, its as people have said, the best area of the system for a RFW is the Brighton...
  23. I still have no idea why actual trackage has to be closed for stations to be constructed in these mock scenarios. For instance, I can see them closing Lex-63rd for a bit to fully construct the other side of the station (or even a part of it, like the lower level for instance, but the tracks remain open for service (or anything else going through 63rd) to bypass safely. Look what they're doing for the Culver viaduct, they didn't exactly shut down the entire thing for weeks or months at a time (save the weekend GO or two).
