CPBO Posted December 17, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 17, 2009 Here's the document that shows how Gov. Paterson, the state Assembly and state Senate quietly whacked funding for the student MetroCard program. Legislative leaders touted the deficit reduction plan on Dec. 2 with press releases proclaiming nearly $3 billion in state spending was cut "while preventing tax hikes and loss of aid to vital services." But Gov. Paterson, Assembly members and state senators didn't mention what was buried on page 79 of the 85-page bill. Albany officials were drastically slashing to only $6 million their payment to the MTA for "the costs of the reduced fare for school children program." RokuSix Posted December 17, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 17, 2009 This angers me. To think that I have to wait so long to play these political games and get a piece of paper to prove that I can... while the people already there keep overlooking important facts...it is so unfair! SubwayGuy Posted December 17, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 17, 2009 Because politicians don't care about doing good. They care about blaming someone else when things go bad.
petabread Posted December 17, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 17, 2009 MTA board member Jeffery Kay announced that yesterday at the board meeting. He kept repeating how Albany isn't showing anyone that Albany is slashing contributions to the metrocards.

SoSpectacular Posted December 17, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 17, 2009 They probably want more kids going to their zoned schools. Francis Lewis is our most crowded school in the borough because it's actually a GOOD public, non-selective school with a decent graduation rate and an abundance of extracurricular activies and classes, which the other high schools here really lack. At least the school will be less crowded... This means we must take what we have and improve upon it. It's the only way to "survive".

MAA89 Posted December 18, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 18, 2009 I don't see what is new about the Daily News article. The fact that the budget for Student MCs were slashed from 45 to 6 million dollars was mentioned in this NY1 bulletin: http://ny1.com/1-all-boroughs-news-content/top_stories/110541/mta-board-passes-doomsday-budget-cuts and we were talking about it in another thread yesterday: http://ny1.com/1-all-boroughs-news-content/top_stories/110541/mta-board-passes-doomsday-budget-cuts The Daily News article was only published this morning and this thread started around midday. I am afraid this is old news and I am surprised no one figured out earlier.

CPBO Posted December 19, 2009 Author Share #10 Posted December 19, 2009 Like a double-post, but on a different thread and on topic... Since the is a Public-Run Private T/A and the State and City cannot find ways to pump money into the T/A. The does not even need to pay for students to get to school, the Department of Education should pay money to the to f...und this Student MetroCard Program. The has the right to cut it even though I am disappointed. The DOE, City and perhaps State should all be responsible for this. The obviously cannot find another way to find money unless if the DOE plans to take over the program, the City and State fund money into the . Obviously, the is always striving to meet the 21st Century needs, but due to their money shortfall and uncooperative State Gov't and Union (no offense), they are experience money problems... very well put!!
