JFK Airport's four-month repair job spells long lines

Delays at Kennedy Airport are expected to get worse starting Monday when its main runway shuts down for a four-month repair project.

About a third of airport traffic - and half of departures - will have to be diverted from the Bay Runway to smaller runways, leading to longer lines on the ground and in the air.

Millions of passengers at other airports also will be delayed by the ripple effect from Kennedy bottlenecks this spring.

The construction also may spark price hikes for airline tickets.

Airlines will have to cut the number of planes flying by about 10%, so they might raise prices because there will be fewer seats to meet demand, analysts say.

We just need another runway at nwk and these issues wouldn't crop up. Good luck to the PA in their repair work!

While there is no 'off season' or slower periods as airline passengers from all over the world use JFK 365 days a year, this is probably the best and only time to do these repairs that would inconvience the least amount of passengers. This time of the late winter/early spring period has slightly less riders than during the mega busy, Summer and Christmas/New Year Holidays periods.

Of course, there are a number of flights between Europe (for example) and the US which operate only during the summer, or operate daily during the summer compared to three times a week (or whatever) at other times. BA have cut their New York frequency slightly I believe, but that's probably due to the economy as well. For a trip of its duration they still operate an enormous amount of capacity, though.

You are right though, it's the best time to do it.

Walking down the street on the way to the bus stop, I saw someone's Newsday in their recycling bin. The cover story was about noise and how the repairs would make more planes circulate over LI waiting for a slot.
