Abba Posted March 11, 2010 Share #1 Posted March 11, 2010 Tonight i got 2 emails at about the same time: QNS-bound A, BKYLN-bound C trains, run express, 59th St to Canal St. Due to switch problems at W. 4th. Visit http://www.mta.info for details. BKLYN-bound F, MANH-bound V trains, delayed and detoured. Due to switch problems at W. 4th St. Visit http://www.mta.info for details. The question could are these switch problems related or are they 2 different problems,in other words could switch problems on the lower level cause problems on the upper level? SmallParkShuttle Posted March 11, 2010 Share #3 Posted March 11, 2010 Just South of W4 St, the local tracks of the sixth ave line split, sending one track to the sixth ave line (left, facing SB) and one to the eigth ave line (right, facing SB). Both those tracks rise to meet the eigth ave local track, which falls in between the lower level tracks. This interlocking is at about W4 St. mezzianine level. At that interlocking, the eighth ave track negociates through a "Y" turnout (switch) to make the same choice the sixth ave tracks made earlier. You can see this on the nycsubway.org link posted below Basically, a frozen turnout on the lower level set for 8 Ave. can cause this problem, and to alleviate congestion, trains are sent express. So, yes these two problems can be related. http://images.nycsubway.org/trackmap/detail-w4.png
