The TTC gave the public its first glimpse of a new fleet of subway cars at Downsview Station on Thursday.

The trains, built by Bombardier, will carry about 10% more passengers than the current trains, or about 120 sleepy Torontonians on their morning commute. The car features an open-concept design which will allow people to walk from car to car. The cars also feature a number of new safety, health and accessibility features such as hand poles covered with an anti-bacterial coating and more wheelchair spaces.

The 78 new subway cars cost $236.7-million and was paid for by all three levels of government.

“I’m incredibly proud of these new generation subway cars and of our ability to support Canadian jobs in the process,” said Mayor Miller in a press release. “Public transit is the most efficient and greenest way to move people, and these cars will make the transit experience even better.”

The first public ride of these trains is expected to take place by December 2010.

These cars will only be run on the Yonge-University-Spadina line and not the Sheppard or Bloor-Danforth line. The 1st order will kill off the H4's and H5's with the second order killing off the H6's. When all are in service the YUS will just be Rocket cars with T1's on the Sheppard and BD lines only.
