Good Amtrak destinations at a cheap price

It is probably cheaper (but a little slower) to take Metro-North to New Haven and get on Amtrak there. However, taking Metro-North to Stamford and then getting on Amtrak in Stamford is sheves 20 minutes of your jouney. (Plus you avoid Penn Station.)

The Vermonter doesn't really go to any skiing areas, but it does take you to Waterbury, VT. At Waterbury, you can get a bus to Stowe. Bad news: Service is infrequent and there are only 5-6 buses a day. Good news: If you have a long layover, you can go to the Ben and Jerry's factory there. (Note: Buses only operate Monday through Friday.) From the Burlington station, buses are avalible to downtown every hour on weekdays and saturdays. There is no Sunday service.

It doesn't save you anything. NYP-BOS is $49, NHV-BOS is $36. MNR is $14 off peak.

I just did some moare research and I found out cost and arrival times. It would be $212 round-trip for two adults to go from New York to Vermont.

To Vermont:

Train leaves Penn Station at 11:33 AM

Train gets to Waterbury at 8:16 PM

Train gets to Essex Junction-Burlington at 8:44 PM

To New York:

Train leaves Essex Junction-Burlington at 9 AM

Train leaves Waterbury at 9:28 AM

Train arrives in NY Penn at 6:41 PM

If your family doesn't like skiing, go to Burlington.

Weekend Buses in Burlington:

On Saturday, routes 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12 and 76. On Sunday, only parts of routes 1 and 12 operate. The good news is that there is a Sunday-only bus serving most areas.

Fares are $1.25 per adult.
