Queens Surface Posted February 11, 2012 Share #3 Posted February 11, 2012 I would take a guess in 2014 whenever the MTA gets to starting that Smart Card program, but then again they just could retrofit the current fareboxes with new readers for smart cards. Far Rock Depot Posted February 11, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 11, 2012 ive been on buses with the pilot smart card reader a year or so ago. its a small device that was placed to the right of the farebox. i highly doubt that if/when the mta starts using this tech that whole new fareboxes will be needed yet alone ordered. Other then that, they will just continue to be reused and rebuilt. The fareboxes are supposed to be replaced IIRC, but I can double check to make sure. Grand Concourse Posted February 13, 2012 Share #6 Posted February 13, 2012 I do hope if the MTA goes out and buy new boxes, they will look to similar types used on Vegas's CAT bus system. Those boxes can not only take $ bills, allow cards to be swiped vs dipped in to be scanned and spat out, but finally distribute cards of a certain value.
