MTA Metro-North Railroad to Test Smartphone Ticketing This Summer

MTA Metro-North Railroad, working with transit mobile ticketing specialists Masabi US Ltd., will begin testing a smartphone app that will let people buy their train tickets anywhere, anytime and never have to hold a piece of paper.

This technology will allow customers to use today's phones to quickly and securely buy and display electronic tickets thereby avoiding queues at ticket machines or having to use cash on-board trains.

"We are as excited to begin testing the next generation ticket selling technology as we were when we introduced ticket vending machines a quarter of a century ago," said Metro-North President Howard Permut. "Our customers adapted quickly to TVMs and they became the preferred way to buy tickets. The latest test is intended to ensure that the newest technology will be equally easy to use, as well as secure and reliable."

During the pilot, select users will be able to download the free app to their iPhone, Android or Blackberry phones. Through the app, these users can buy any type of ticket, one-way, round trip, 10-trip, monthly etc., with any origin and destination, using their credit or debit cards to make the purchase.

Long overdue!! I usually decide to take MetroNorth on a whelm like when I wake up and decide to sleep a bit later and those friggin drivers on the Hudson Rail Link sometimes like to cut it close, especially the one that is supposed to meet the 09:22 train at Spuyten Duyvil. <_< It usually means that I may have to rush over to the vending machine and hope that there isn't a long line, or that there are problems with the machine accepting credit cards because I could very well miss my train. Almost happened the other day too. Driver came late and then got caught up because they were repaving several streets. Had literally one minute to get my ticket and get downstairs for the train. Being able to get tickets with my phone will be GREAT, not to mention no need to have a receipt print out now. I can just whip out my cell phone and let them scan the ticket.

What part of "on a whelm" do you not understand???

First of all, it's whim, not whelm, so no I don't understand.

Second of all, let me think. You know that once in a while you're going to use Metro-North because of traffic or whatever. Could it hurt to have a few tickets lying around so you could just grab it on your way out the door and not have to worry about buying a ticket when you get there?

Oh I forgot... You never have any typos... "Your vs you're"... And if I knew I would be using it then yeah I would buy tickets in advance. If I buy an unlimited express bus pass then that means that I don't plan on using MetroNorth. How I spend my money is MY business. I don't need your damn advice.

What the hell are you talking about? I used proper grammar up above. It wouldn't make sense to say "Grab it on you're [you are] way out of the door".

And you said yourself that you mainly use the express bus and get a weekly pass, but even with the occasional trip on Metro-North, it's still a good deal. Something like that. You made that post today, so don't ask me to look it up because you'll only embarasss yourself.

And I'm not saying how you should spend your money. I'm not saying not to buy Metro-North tickets. I was just giving a suggestion on how to save time. I guarantee you the next time you go to the station, you'll follow my advice, even if you don't admit it here.

Here we go again... Did it occur to you that I was referring to another post...

So what? That still has nothing to do with me using MetroNorth sporadically. Maybe I don't want to buy them in advance and it is more convenient for me to buy them as I need them.

Uh okay... I'm so incompetent now that I need you to tell me how to plan my commute...

Go ahead. If I made that mistake so often, it should be no problem to find it.

And in any case, I wasn't making any wise-guy comments while I made those mistakes.

Or maybe it's not......

Yes.

Ok can you guys just leave the arguments to the mailbox?! Almost a lot of post I see, is arguments and more between you guys. I'm neutral in all this, but lets keep it clean folks.

There is nothing for me to keep anywhere because I didn't ask for his advice on when I decide to buy my MetroNorth tickets. All I stated was why it would be more convenient for me and others for that matter. If it doesn't work for him then he feels he must automatically give his unsolicited advice. Aside from being pressed for time, it is simply more convenient to be able to buy them on the go and long overdue, not to mention that it should save on the waste of paper and such to print those things.

You right VG8 it's your money. With that said this is why alot of people on board are not thrilled with you with your rude comments. How about just being polite sometimes to a poster saying "Ok i consider it?" Then do what the hell you want with your money. Honestly Checkmate made a damn good advice IMO but again it's your choice.

And what i say if you dont like Checkmate comments to avoid him. I wont say it again. And no rude replies to me as a mod.

Back to topic. On the topic great move. Just wondering if MNRR will still charge a late fee.(buying on board cash with conductor)

Probably. I mean, with this new thing, it's a matter of the conductor just glancing at your phone (or maybe quickly scanning it), similar to a paper ticket, whereas with the cash, he has to handle the cash and process it and everything.

Eh, you could always just pick up the MetroCard when you get to Manhattan. I think this is more for people who are in a rush (i.e. The train is pulling into the station and you see 5 people ahead of you at the ticket machine), rather than monthly pass holders (but then again, it's easier to just have the monthly pass on your phone instead of having to worry about losing a paper pass.

I assume that they scan the code on your phone and then it gets invalidated, right? Or else somebody could just buy one ticket and keep holding up the same code every time they get on the train.

Oh I forgot... You never have any typos... "Your vs you're"...

I just thought I'd add this, but it's "in sync", not "in sink". Just saying....... back to the topic at hand........

But still you technially have you entire ride with that ticket/MetroCard and it saves you from the lines @the vending machines @GCT or Penn Station (if the LIRR starts this too.)

True. But maybe in the future, there will be some way of doing both. I mean, they had some kind of pilot program where you could tap a credit card on the farebox/turnstile and it would charge you and let you through, so in a few years, it might no be an issue.

In any case, it can't hurt to have the extra option of buying it on your phone.

Relax okay. I don't always use an English keyboard when I'm on here so I'm bound to have some mistakes.

All I'm saying is don't give me attitude when you yourself are making a mistake.

You know for cash customers: one selects the ticket and then when the conductor scans the barcode. he/she charges the fare

Out of curiosity, can you buy a monthly pass or something directly from the conductor? Or only a single-ride ticket.
