mark1447 Posted July 24, 2012 Share #1 Posted July 24, 2012 Megabus is being moved from its Port Authority bus stop. After months of complaints that the discount carrier was being allowed to pick up customers for free on 41st Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, the company is being shunted to Manhattan's far west side. The Department of Transportation told the service it must move by the end of this month, Megabus said in a statement. As of Aug. 1, buses will pick up fares on the south side of West 34th Street, between 11th and 12th Avenues. The new hub is in a location that Community Board 4 has asked for for months. In frequent letters to the city's Department of Transportation, the board pointed out that the spot near the Javits Center is far enough west that it would not conflict with any residential properties. Megabus previously rejected the location as too remote earlier this year, but ran into trouble operating at the Port Authority stop on West 41st Street, where it was allowed to pick up free of charge. Several rival bus companies brought a lawsuit against the DOT claiming that Megabus had an unfair competitive advantage at the location, getting most of the perks of being near the city's bus terminal without having to pay millions in fees usually associated with the location. That lawsuit was eventually thrown out of court, but intense lobbying from the neighborhood — not to mention a long list of safety concerns from the Port Authority itself — prompted the DOT to kick the discount bus carrier out of the spot by the end of the month. Megabus' arrivals hub will still be in the middle of the city — it will continue to send incoming buses to the corner of Seventh Avenue and West 28th Street. Shortline Bus Posted July 24, 2012 Share #2 Posted July 24, 2012 Actually with the extension opening in a couple of years i think the megabus/bolt bus and even a couple of NJ Transit buses could terminate in that area. There empty space in area of 34th St between 12 Ave/West Side Highway and 11th Ave by the Javitz area.

KeystoneRegional Posted July 30, 2012 Share #4 Posted July 30, 2012 I guess I won't be using Megabus outbound until the extension is complete and in operation, doesn't mean that Greyhound/Peter Pan/Boltbus Operations would enjoy my money and ride, I'll choose NJTransit/SEPTA Combo to Philly. #teamStageCoach, lols, =P... Perhaps the city should build a municipal bus terminal over the MTA property at that location to get all of the 'curbside' bus operations off the street, since the PABT doesn't seem to have sufficient capacity for them. There is fairly good access to the Lincoln Tunnel from there, and with the new 7 train terminal, easier access for passengers...

City, MTA and PANYNJ should fund that new terminal to help take the over flow off PABT and get rid of all curbside operations
Bill from Maspeth Posted September 3, 2012 Share #7 Posted September 3, 2012 Was at the new site early yesterday morning. Private cars and cabs blocking bus lanes making drop offs after making an illegal U-Turns in the middle of the street. There is going to be major injuries and property damage in time. No city enforcement around. Took the 6:30 to Philadelphia, 500 series DD, coming home on the 19:30 on a 400 series DD, bus really beat up cosmetically. KeystoneRegional Posted September 6, 2012 Share #8 Posted September 6, 2012 I actually agree and think it's a good idea to build an inter-city bus terminal across the Jacob Javits Convention Center. They could get all the low-priced bus carriers (and perhaps select Eastern Bus, Fung Wah and Chinatown Operators to also) depart via that new terminal. Port Authority could also be relieved somewhat...
