MTARegional Bus Posted July 29, 2012 Share #26 Posted July 29, 2012 I remember it just like that!!! Tho I didn't know they had the exhaust pipes on the top, always thought those came in, in the early 2000s. Thanks for the throw back!! The exhaust pipes on top have been the a RTS'S since 96, but that was for the novas only, it would be on till 97 or 98 when they started to install the pipes on the TMC
NewFlyer 230 Posted July 29, 2012 Share #27 Posted July 29, 2012 Did those 1990-1991 RTS's #8000-8399 sound the same back in 1993 as they did before they were retired in 2010?
The Real Posted July 29, 2012 Author Share #28 Posted July 29, 2012 Did those 1990-1991 RTS's #8000-8399 sound the same back in 1993 as they did before they were retired in 2010? Nope, 8000-8397 and 8400 was originally powered with a Detroit Diesel 6V92 with a Allison V-731 Transmission (even though 8397 was Methanol powered). 8398 and 8399 was powered with a Cummins L10G with a ZF ECOMAT 5HP-500 Transmission. At the end of life, 8000-8396 had Detroit Diesel Series 50 EGRs with a Allison V-731 Transmission. 8397 died as a Hybrid Electric with a Detroit Diesel Series 30 and a GM Allison Hybrid Drive. 8398 and 8399 died at Command Bus as Buses #4976-4977 with Detroit Diesel Series 50G and Allison V-731 Transmissions. As you know 8400 is NYPD 9598 and still retains its original 6V92/V731 set up.

tkx2510 Posted July 30, 2012 Share #32 Posted July 30, 2012 Damn I really miss those days. I remember living in Fresh Meadows along 188th when these showed up at QV and Jamaica. The original iteration of the Series 50 and the Alcoas made them official. Used to love going to Jamaica Ave for the private bus line TMCs That bus i first seen run on the B45 line to Downtown Brooklyn when i was back in brooklyn.
