BM5 via Woodhaven Posted January 24, 2016 Share #1 Posted January 24, 2016 From 1/16 I start the day off taking the subway ( the was running local, so one less transfer at 71st Avenue was needed) to Jamaica, catching the n6 to Hempstead, and then catch either the n55 or n71 to Sunrise Mall (the n55 would give me only 4 minutes to make a connection at Sunrise ti the n80, while the n71 gave me three, however the 71 leaves before the n55). The bus was on layover, as you can some in one of the pictures. I only got on the n71 because while both buses were Orion V's, the ex-Foothills are in much better shape IMO. 2002 Orion V CNG 1013 on the N71 (NICE Bus) at Hempstead Transit Center by BM5 via Woodhaven, on Flickr Here's the Stat for that trip Route: n71 Time: 11:45 AM Bus: 1013 Origin: Hempstead Transit Center Destination: Sunrise Mall Stop Ridership Revenue Hempstead Transit Center 23/0 $57.75 Fulton Avenue/ Tennessee Avenue 0/1 $0.00 Fulton Avenue/ Hendrickson Avenue 1/1 $2.75 Fulton Avenue/ Kernochan Avenue 1/0 $2.75 Hempstead Turnpike/ California Avenue 0/2 $0.00 Hempstead Turnpike/ Uniondale Avenue 2/0 $1.35 Hempstead Turnpike/ Glenn Curtis Blvd 0/1 $0.00 Hempstead Turnpike/ Merrick Avenue 0/1 $0.00 East Meadow Plaza 0/1 $0.00 Hempstead Turnpike/ Squire Ave 0/2 $0.00 Nassau University Medical Center 0/1 $0.00 Hempstead Turnpike/ Franklin Avenue 1/5 $2.75 Hempstead Turnpike/ Prospect Avenue 0/1 $0.00 Hempstead Turnpike/ Newbridge Road 2/0 $5.50 Hempstead Turnpike/ Center Lane 0/3 $0.00 Hempstead Turnpike/ Jerusalem Avenue 0/2 $0.00 Route 109/ Main Street 1/0 $2.75 Carmans Road/ North Gate 0/1 $0.00 Sunrise Mall 0/5 $0.00 Total Riders: 31 The bus was 9 minutes behind at one point (past NUMC), and I was really worried about not making it. Suddenly though, the bus does the Carmans Road segment pretty fast, and makes it to Sunrise Mall at 12:41, a minute before the n80 was supposed to leave. The problem is, the n80 left a minute early. I saw the bus when arriving at the mall, praying for it to not leave, which did nothing. I had it planned so that I can take the n80 to Hicksville, to the n73 to Wantagh, to the n19 to Freeport, to the n4 to Jamaica. I did not have a back-up plan, so I had to figure out one, which I quickly managed to do. I was going to take the n19 departing the mall at :20 towards Freeport, get off at Wantagh Avenue, find an eating spot, then get on the n73 to Hicksville, for the n24 to Jamaica. I ride it to Wantagh Avenue. At Merrick Road/Unqua, two women and their child got on, and they got into a fight with the driver because apparently he skipped them at Dunkin Donuts (which I believe is on the part of the route east of Sunrise Mall, so they walked, and driver says that he had no time, insisting they didn't arrive at the stop on time. IDK who's right, but it was "entertaining", to say the very least. 2003 Orion V CNG 1699 on the N19 (NICE Bus) at Sunrise Mall by BM5 via Woodhaven, on Flickr Here's another shot of 1699 after getting off at Wantagh Avenue 2003 Orion V CNG 1699 on the n19 (NICE Bus) at Merrick Road/ Wantagh Avenue by BM5 via Woodhaven, on Flickr I didn't know what to do, since the n73 arrived in 30 minutes. All I wanted to do was hop on a bus to Queens (no matter which one it was). NICE and accurate bus stop sign by BM5 via Woodhaven, on Flickr I catch the n24 to Jamaica, since it came first. 2015 New Flyer "Xcelsior" XN40 1900 on the n24 (NICE Bus) at Hicksville LIRR by BM5 via Woodhaven, on Flickr I try getting off at Queens Village, to catch the Q88 to get home, but the driver bypassed my stop, and the other stop, and I asked him where he stops. He apologized and said something along the lines of there's a lot of things to handle, a lot of noises to deal with, and that he sometimes can't hear it. Either way, I end up missing the bus that I could've made if he didn't bypass the two stops. The next one was a no-show, so I ended up waiting 20 minutes for the Q88 (should've just went to Jamaica). This was my ride home, and wrapped up my little fan trip. 2011 Nova Bus LFS 8039 on the Q88 at Amboy Lane/ Jamaica Avenue by BM5 via Woodhaven, on Flickr

BM5 via Woodhaven Posted January 27, 2016 Author Share #4 Posted January 27, 2016 Nice ones. (pun intended ) Thanks! So sad the n73 had to die this way RIP n73 and cornflower loop Well, no one used the cornflower loop anyways (however I feel the n73 via Jerusalem/Gardiner all day would've sufficed). N6 Limited Posted January 27, 2016 Share #5 Posted January 27, 2016 Well, no one used the cornflower loop anyways (however I feel the n73 via Jerusalem/Gardiner all day would've sufficed). Does anyone know why the n73 was used more than the n74? Could they have merged the routes? Could they have merged the N80 and N81?
checkmatechamp13 Posted January 28, 2016 Share #6 Posted January 28, 2016 Does anyone know why the n73 was used more than the n74? Could they have merged the routes? Could they have merged the N80 and N81? I think the n73 was kept because it was marginally shorter than the n74. The n73 had a 27 minute runtime, while the n74 had a 31 minute runtime. So with the n73, you could run 60 minute headways with one bus (27 minute runtime with a 3 minute break on each end). That's why rush hours, they had both running, but on a 40 minute headway. The n73 had some extra runtime added with the Cornflower loop, and the n74 was over 30 minutes anyway, so you just had two buses going up and down the corridor during rush hour. DS4Ever Posted January 28, 2016 Share #7 Posted January 28, 2016 Dont forget that 27minutes is an estimate so if the n73 leavesHicksville at 4:30pm it should arrive Wantagh at 4-57pm...but in peak hours buses can becaught in traffic leading for a n73 bus to arrive Wantagh at 5:05-5:10pm...for to have a 60 minute headway would mean the n73 should speed up its run (that would also cost the bypass of the Cornflower loop since predominately no one boards in this loop so it is much of a waste The n73 has possibility in being revived as well as the n81
