But in Atlanta? Not so much. However, some commuters on the city’s southside were treated to an odd sight this week: a double-decker bus, decked out in MARTA livery. The bus, which holds about 100 people, is part of a six-week trial to see if the model could help ease congestion along some of the system’s busiest routes, according to the AJC.For now, the trial is restricted to serving Clayton County, where the 14-foot-tall beast doesn’t have to navigate around any low bridges. Other routes will be announced throughout the trial period, officials said. This trial should probably come as jolly good news for transit enthusiasts. MARTA is thinking outside the box. And above the bus.But MARTA’s new toy isn’t the first high-capacity bus solution the system is exploring as it diversifies its rolling stock to fit a range of needs. Earlier this summer, the agency rolled out double-long articulated buses, also capable of holding about 100 riders.
QM1to6Ave Posted July 20, 2016 Share #2 Posted July 20, 2016 What ever happened with the MTA's trial of a double-decker?
GojiMet86 Posted July 20, 2016 Author Share #3 Posted July 20, 2016 What ever happened with the MTA's trial of a double-decker? Too much time to deboard and too tall? That would be my best guess. There was a discussion before from 2009: http://www.nyctransitforums.com/forums/topic/14475-double-decker-buses/
LegoBrickBreaker101 Posted July 21, 2016 Share #4 Posted July 21, 2016 Oh wow, those look nice! I'm heading to Atlanta in December, so hopefully those are in service then.
GojiMet86 Posted July 21, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted July 21, 2016 It's a six week trial, so don't get your hopes to high up. If MARTA does indeed order them, then you might have to wait a while.
