Mock-up offers glimpse at T's new train cars for Orange, Red Lines

Recommended Posts

Interesting article and photos about the hard mockup for CRRC's first US order...

Take your first look at a physical template for the new vehicles that will replace all the trains on the Orange and Red Lines over the next few decades.

A Chinese company, China Railroad Rolling Stock Corp. is building a factory in Springfield to manufacture the cars locally. Each of the new cars costs about $2.43 million.

The factory is expected to be completed this year, and manufacturing will begin around April 2018.

Eventually, 152 of the cars will be produced for the Orange Line and another 252 will be produced for the Red Line.

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officials have said that a fleet of standardized cars built by a single manufacturer would be more efficient for training and repairs than putting the contract out to bid by other manufacturers. They also said it would be cheaper to replace all the cars than continue to upgrade the old ones.

Gov. Charlie Baker, MassDOT CEO Stephanie Pollack and members of the media were given a tour of the new mock-up on Tuesday in Medford.

Damn, retiring trains from 1990? They should send them to us when they're done lol

BTW, I just checked, their fleet actually has the same specs as ours. Hmmm......

plus the fact they are retiring thw 1800 series the "newer" ones

30 years almost I remember R21 and R22 cars they were fairly young as well when they went. So not unheard of.

Those first AC propulsions have become really unreliable...

London is also planning the replacement of their 1992 tube stock by 2025

That's about the size of it.

The R30s were mothballed early. They lasted from 1960 to 1990.

The (C) and (M) were running redbirds until at least 1993-94. Maybe the ones on the (J) left in 1990 I remember them I was riding them on the (C)(M) but still young indeed.
