No 4 Avenue service... so (N) runs via tunnel and Brighton express to Brighton Beach and as a shuttle between 36 Street and Coney Island. The (Q) runs via bridge and Brighton local as usual. That has to be the most retarded GO.

Someone going between southwestern Brooklyn and Manhattan has to choose between train-bus-train or take a detour to Coney Island via the local (Q)/(F), while the rerouted express (N) dead-ends at Brighton Beach. Who is this helping exactly?

I believe the (N) only ran to/from Brighton Beach because there just wasn't any other feasible turnaround (which is why it also went express down the Brighton Line). They could theoretically terminate them at Prospect Park, but that would be extremely disruptive to (Q) trains. I know (J) trains terminated there when they used to run to South Brooklyn during (4) train G.Os.

Nomenclature/Routing Wise, the other scenario wouldn't have been much better:

  • (N) Astoria to Whitehall Street (basically the (W))
  • (R) Forest Hills to Brighton Beach

While the (R) stations in Downtown Brooklyn would all be served by the (R) train instead of the (N) , after a certain hour there is no regularly scheduled (R) service north of Whitehall Street. You would end up either adding additional (R) service, or having (N) trains eventually operating into Brooklyn after a certain hour, which would complicate things even more.

The other alternatives would have been

1. Cut the (N) south of 34 St (bypassing 49 St) and make the (Q) local via lower manhattan in both directions, and run the (D) to Brooklyn as the Brighton Express to Brighton Beach

2. Terminate the (Q) at Brighton Beach and connect the two (D) or (N) services by extending them to Stillwell Av.

both plans would have then caused an unnecessary reroute of the (Q) just to piece together the 4 Av services.

The (N) could not end at Prospect Park because of the delay to the (Q) by fumigation, and terminating at Kings Highway posed an issue because of a single pocket track relay and I’m not sure about the presence or lack of a crew room at Kings Highway, so extending to Brighton Beach would have been the most feasible. Extending both the (N)(Q) to Stillwell Av would have required the Astoria-Brighton service to share the island platform with the Sea Beach shuttle service. And remember that the headways on the (N) were already thinned out to not need extra train crews and account for the limited terminal capacity at 36 St for both the (N) and (R) shuttles.
