  1. They've already had R211s run simulated service on the (C) for thermal capacity testing over the summer so it wouldn't surprise me to see production sets on the (C) occasionally as they phase out the R46s. I could see them doing that particularly on weekends like how the (R) used to borrow a few R160s from the (E) and (F) to give some of the Jamaica R46s a rest before 2020.

So on Presidents’ Day week, they are replacing the switches at 42nd St which will have downtown (E) train runs via 6th Ave, but the (M) is completely suspended between Essex St & 71 Ave, instead running to Chambers St. Why is the (M) being affected by this?

Right now on the app I only see the (E) service change.

I also haven’t seen any new R211. YouTube videos in the past month. The mechanical issues must be very extensive that the train is likely sitting in the yard. Better now than in the future when you’d have to pull the whole fleet out of service like we did with the R179s and how the Washington Metro is doing now with the 7000-series trains (also Kawasaki). However I’ve been hearing that the issues with Washington Metro cars may be a track related issue affecting every car in the entire fleet but that the 7000s are worse off

As far as I can tell the WMATA issue is a combination of a track related issue and a spec change made by WMATA to the 7000 series during construction which affected the structure integrity of their axles. Their solution at the moment is to do inspections of both more frequently to catch defects faster.

Ok. So the primary order for R211As are 4060-4499. The R211T are 4040-4049 (with another 10 to be delivered as 4050-4059). Since the TA exercised option number 1, what are the numbers for those?

I would expect they would be 3400-4039 since that happens to be exactly 640 cars and fits nicely with the existing batch of 4040-4499. Option 2 would then start at 4500.

Then get ready to see those (G) trains carry air.

Three of the top ten "hottest" neighborhoods in NYC in terms of both housing searches and transactions (Red Hook, Gowanus & Fort Greene) are served by the (G). I doubt it would be empty for long.

  6. If the (G) went to 8 cars, then they would just discontinue OPTO on the weekends the same way they did to the (M) during the Canarsie Tubes project.

Also there is no way they would ever schedule 12-15 minute frequencies on the (G). That would be political suicide.

  7. Serious question for the technically minded folks:

how possible would it be to install a "simplified" CBTC system on the museum fleet that sends out its location so the system knows where it is and receives signals from it (almost like cab signalling) but doesn't include ATO, so that museum trains can continue to operate as more and more sections of track are cut over?

I'm not sure if this is confirmed, but Grand Avenue just updated their label. z6na4HS.jpg

I wouldn't mind this if it was the same kind of illustration as the classic NYCT depot stickers like ENY, Amsterdam, Flatbush and Kingsbridge (incidentally I almost typed "the classic NYCT depot stickers from the 90's" ; do we actually know when depot stickers were first created?)

This one looks too much like the clip arty style of illustration the MTA Bus stickers have and it just doesn't look right

  9. I just want to know what's by 1st Av and 58th St that's worthy of rerouting the B64 over there when it's already used as a pretty important crosstown route and the only route between western Bay Ridge and the zoned middle school in Dyker Heights.

The Brooklyn Army Terminal isn't *that* much of a ridership generator. B11s over there are generally empty... I just don't get it.

  10. I'm late to the party on this but I have a few questions for anyone proposing that one yard lend equipment to a line from another yard for the purposes of making service:

    1. How are we getting the borrowed equipment to that line for the start of the GO?

    2. Where is the normal equipment for that line going to go during the GO?

and 3. How are we going to ensure that both the borrowed and sidelined equipment is going to be in the proper places to resume normal service when the GO concludes?

But why is the Holiday Train ending at Chambers St?

And where is the TRUE holiday train with the R9’s that is a tradition for many New Yorkers? I miss the older days when it was simple and would run 2nd Ave to Queens Plaza.

    1. Because the train is using South Ferry Loop to turn and they don't want to deal with the first five cars stuff again

    2. The Arnines are not available due to mechanical issues.

Why would the contract force the system to be activated?

Because it is standard practice for both parties to agree on a project duration and then the contractor gets a bonus if they hit that date and it is also common for the contractor to be docked pay if they are late.

In this instance where the MTA is refusing to activate CBTC after the contractor has completed the work, it is not only violating the contract terms it is also denying the contractor its bonus and docking pay (for it being completed late) even thought the contractor fulfilled its end of the bargain as written in the contract.

If I was in charge, I would have continued with the installation of CBTC on QBL but not activated it / changed fleet around until all the 211’s came in. Because I know that R46’s, which have been home to the (A) for a while, would not survive on heavy ridership/dwell times like Broadway. That’s also why I wouldn’t have retired 50 R32’s and instead assigned a small number to CIY/Pitkin.

And the contractor who installed it would sue you in five seconds. That's very clearly breach of contract.

Ahhh okay. Your Sea Beach middle track justification actually is not correct - the sea beach express track is ni-directional signaling - that’s how the (N) used that track between Kings Highway and 59 St during the station rehab

You are correct that the middle track is bidirectionally signaled but they put it in absolute block between 8th Avenue and 86th Street when the R211 tests.

also while I’m here: there are multiple 30 minute gaps on the (C) in the Bronx today, gee I guess they really did need the R68s to supplement after all :shrugs:
