  1. Does anyone else miss painted subway cars? From redbirds to bluebirds to greenbirds, the blue door R32, and the famous blue stripe Corporate scheme, the NYC subway used to be quite colorful (when the cars were not covered in graffiti). But every car from the R62 onwards has been made of stainless steel, only broken up by the temporary occasional ad/promotional wrap or Cuomo stripes. Why did NYCT move away from painting subway cars?
  2. I would love to see a video of this. And imagine activating the emergency brake at that speed.
  3. This is not from the subway, but I assume the SMEE propulsion boxes are similar to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FRRaKFDqJ8
  4. Does anyone think a NTT could go 70 mph (assuming it was on a test track) if their max speed of 55 mph programmed into them was bypassed? The much older R44s famously hit 80 mph during a test on the LIRR.
  5. Why even is the MTA continuing to install CBTC on subway. Are the current signals not sufficient enough?
  6. Queens Boulevard signals every week: link
  7. Why would the contract force the system to be activated?
  8. I think this is probably the only reason why the MTA requested these features.
  9. I meant to ask what exactly are the differences. (and what is translation?) Also, Yes, as well as cab audio recording, according to the technical specifications.
  10. What are the differences between the R211 and previous NTTs?
  11. Trains built by Kawasaki around the same time as the R62: link link
  12. Does anyone here know where I can find better pictures of Singapore MRT train cabs/controls? All the ones from Google are either low quality are shown from a bad angle or low quality.
  13. I always wonder how different the subway would have been if these fleets did not have so many problems.
  14. Was there a specific reason why the MTA never adopted chopper control in the later SMEEs? Many rapid transit cars of that era had moved on from camshaft/resistance control to dc chopper.
  15. The Main Obstacle to PSDs right now is 1. SMEEs (R68/As and R62/As probably have 10 more years of service left), 2. lack of CBTC, and 3. narrow platforms and pillars. In my opinion Platform Doors should still be heavily considered (All these people getting hit by trains every week) as more of these obstacles are removed. Edit: At least NYCT had the foresight to standardized door position on each division since the NTTs came out.
  16. Did you look at the diagram I made? The train doors on the B (or A) division NTTs are all the the same places on the car regardless of door width. The Platform Screen Doors will only need to be as wide as the widest train doors. (58 inches)
  17. Trains only need to be standardized within their division, (will happens when all SMEEs are retired.) and as long as the doors are in the same positions in all cars on the division then Platform doors will work.
  18. Yes I totally want to be a share of the MTR. Once all the SMEEs are gone door placement will not be a problem. (Will be the same within each division.) Also can’t the PSDs detect the length of the train and selectively open? Also in general there is no good excuse for the subway being so behind the time in technology.
  19. Totally. The open gangways we speak of have existed since the 70s on the HK MTR, and almost every station has has PSDs RETROFITTED in them. Not to mention CBTC installed on most lines.
  20. Based on how long the R211A testing has been extended, I don't think this will happen.
  21. I guess I am an Idiot. I meant why do people get struck by the trains all the time?
