  1. I doubt the R211s are that much more complex than the first gen NTT (R142/143/160/179) . "Under the hood" I wouldn't be surprised if the R160s and R211s are identical ... they even have the same trucks. I believe all 50 cars that survived the R160 order got an SMS at least once. There's an photo of an SMS'd R42 in CI overhaul shop taken in 2017 https://nycsubway.org/perl/show?148099 Another photo of an SMS'd 42 on the https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?152633
  2. The R68/68As will not fall apart, they are stainless steel and can run as long as the R32s did if necessary. With the Redbirds and 38/40/42/44s it was body issues (rusting, etc) that was an bigger issue than mechanical performance I'll never forget fans saying that the 42s wouldn't be able to last past the late 2000s..... only for them to run until 2020.
  3. NYCT can receive different car classes at the same time. At one point in the early 2000s the TA was receiving brand new Bombardier R142s, Kawasaki R142As and R143s all at the Same time. It can be done, if the new cars have issues just keep the old ones in service until the teething issues are worked out on the new stuff. That's what did with the R142/142A when they was new, IDK why posters in this thread so worried about new car orders coming in simultaneously, TA made it work in the past and can do it again. I believe the R62A and R68 orders overlapped as well.
  4. Tonight on the train home the C/R made that there's NYPD on the platform announcement at Myrtle-Wyckoff.
  5. News article released today on the R211 option order...
  6. You said "When I dip my metrocard" the driver told me "MY card" so I assume you was talking about yourself. I know about the fair fares program, I thought OP was talking about himself and he makes it well known on here what his employment is so I seriously doubt hes qualified for some fair fares program.
  7. How do you have a reduced fare metrocard when you're not a senior and have a job? Only non senior ppl who have reduced fare cards are ppl on SSI or disabled. You can work part time on SSI and still receive the reduced fare card. But you can't get a reduced fare card while being young with a full time job AFAIK.... No wonder they "blacklisted" your card.
  8. Just because a bus has a dent on it doesn't mean their maintenance is bad. For example ENY has good maintenance yet one of their 4800s has an damaged railing or A/C cover or w/e it is on the roof. Ppl hate on GH but I never hear anybody complain about the service quality on their routes. While depots with good maintenance out there have routes that run poorly. Always wanted to point that out. As for the best, I'd say it's an toss up between all the Brooklyn depots (except for Ulmer Park) all the years I've been riding SC routes I only had an issue once where an C40 HVAC wasn't working properly on a hot day, kept shutting on and off and it was warm inside the bus. But I'm pretty sure every depot a couple of buses out on the road with minor defects.
  9. I wonder if NYCT ever considered married pairs again for the NTT to increase flexibility. The M7/8/9's on the commuter railroads are in married pairs and have those computer screens in the cabs just like the R142 and up do on NYCT. So maintaining additional master controllers, computer screens and whatever other equipment is in the cabs shouldn't be an massive extra expense considering LIRR & MNR does it. But open gangway seems to be the future for NYCT so two five car sets to make up an train it is.
  10. Surprised NJT wouldn't allow it when when there's NJT content for Train Simulator, with the NJT logo on the trains and everything. You gotta pay for the NJT content too. Never knew NJT had an store at Newark Penn.
  11. Just who exactly is this marketed too? Only transit buffs are the only people I can see wearing a NJT themed polo. I don't think there are enough transit fans in NJ for this to be an success lol. Even in NYC, I only see railfans wearing those subway bullet tees, never regular commuters. I had an subway map T shirt and wore it to my high school and nobody clowned me to my surprise This will flop even with fans, it might have an chance with buffs if the merchandise had NJT iconic equipment like the Geeps, Arrows or Flxible Metro buses.
  12. The R68 and R68As are linked in permanent four car sets. IIRC the Franklin Shuttle 68s are singles. I can understand how ppl get confused cause some of the unused cabs in the 68/68A cars are full width. They never would allow an 10 car 75ft consist to run in passenger service. They might be able to run an 10 car 75FT consist in yard moves but never in revenue service.
  13. What app are you using? In the Transit Tracker app NYCT and MTA Bus track the same. I use it regularly to track the B42 and B103 (MTA Bus) .
  14. NYC already had open gangway cars years ago, the BMT D Types..
  15. There's quite a few Redbirds apart of transit museum collection, they just repainted some of the pairs into pre GOH paint schemes. There's an R36WF pair in the museum fleet still in the Redbird paint scheme. As well as one R33ML car in a pair (the other car in the pair is green). The R33ML & R33WF probably got the most cars in the TM fleet, it's ethier the R33s or the IND prewar cars with the most cars in the TM fleet.
  16. Can't speak for others but for me, riding the line and seeing those car classes on the . This usually happens when the terminates at 96th street and the is cut off from its yard and has to borrow cars from other lines.
  17. There's both R62 AND an R62A on the today. Wanted the R62A but it was serveral trains behind the one I was on and I didn't feel like wasting my day waiting for it.
  18. This blog post explains it better than I could https://www.thelirrtoday.com/2019/09/m-7-window-splotching.html?m=1 The M8s windows are still clear on both sides of the train and the M9s will have the same problem as the M7s do on the southern windows.
  19. LIRR M7 #7494 and its mate has clear windows on its southern side. As yall know most M7s windows on the southern side are messed up due to the sun. NJ Transit MLV fleet has the same problem but on BOTH sides of the car due to looping at Sunnyside so NJT plans to replace the windows on its MLV fleet. Let's hope LIRR follows suit with its M7 fleet.
  20. That type of railroad building is called an "Embankment". https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embankment_(earthworks)#:~:text=A road%2C railway line%2C or,detour to follow a contour.
  21. Advocacy group f**kery Passengers United running up on Jumaane Williams outside of Hotels Very entertaining video especially at the beginning.
  22. I know, I remember. I actually seen the pinstripes wrapped R142 on the line in service back then.
  23. NYC has two sports teams for every sport, I guess that's why they don't bother with such a thing. Let's say the Yankees and Mets meet in World Series or the Knicks and Nets play eachother in a playoff series, then what? In general the MTA only does special things for baseball, wraps, vintage trains runs, etc. Both Kay and Gary got to do automated announcements in the subway but nothing from Breen or Clyde even though they just as legendary.
  24. What makes you say that? IF they recorded SIR announcements back when they did the A & B div announcements all they have do is an patch job deleting the two closed stations and add Author Kill Road and the S79 SBS transfer. If they didn't record SIR R211 announcements until recently... Personally I hope the new lady that does the PSA announcements on the mainline NTT does the station to station announcements on the SIR with Charlie still doing the "Stand clear of the closing doors" announcement. EDIT: The new lady name is Velina Mitchell
