  1. They were posted on an RTO Facebook group. I wasn't even thinking of the new 86th, but it's understandable to get thrown off by that, since the focus is the new uptown line.
  2. The 5000's are among the older fleet that will be on their way out soon (along with the 94-9600's, which are already on their way out), so I've never understood what the big deal was with handing down those RTS models.
  3. The new timetables were finally released today. Been waiting for this, to see the whole deal regarding the (N)'s to 96th. There are three in the AM, the first to return to the regular route afterwards, and the last one lays up, but apparently doesn't return to service, as there are no putins from there in the PM. (Not sure what it does then. I imagine probably City Hall? Can't tell what comes from there, as I don't see anything dropping out or going in from there. They all must run light from the northern terminal). Instead, four trains come from regular service and then return to it from 96th for the PM. You still have the three putins that go into service at 86th, but only one hat returns there for the night. The rest all drop out at Ditmars. However, after the AM, you do have two that return to 86th! It wasn't like this before! The has two AM putins from 96th and one layup afterward, and one putin and two layups for the PM. Weekends, it's one putin at the beginning of the day, and the layup at the end of the day (though early evening on Sunday).
  4. I don't even know why they did that. I know they're working on the new other half of the station,but the switch is a ways outside of the station.
  5. I don't understand why the area has to be commercial. That's precisely what makes it so slow to travel through in the first place (and the street, for its busy-ness seeming to be even narrower than Beverley). Generally, they don't want big commercial vehicles on parkways. While a "parkway" usually refers to the semi-controlled access roads with the lower underpasses, it seems both Ocean and Eastern Parkways are treated the same. They are basically scenic, and they don't want them clogged with big trucks and buses and other commercial traffic. So they allow some buses on south of Ave. X (and I'm trying to remember if they stay on mostly the service lane. I think at least one of them may switch over to the main road, for the purpose of making the left turn, either direction). So again, it's just a matter of them opening up another allowance for that first block to the north. But I doubt they'll ever allow the whole length of it.
  6. Beverley has a train station as well. I don't think they would allow buses to go that far on Ocean Parkway. Beverley is just one black, and I hope they wouldn't rule that out. (They're on the parkway Ave. X and beyond, but that area seems different, like with the hospital and the highrises. I don't think they want them between Church and X. But the one block to Beverley shouldn't be a problem. But having to get off way back at 10th Av and navigate down McDonald and the zigzag across Church, then to Cortelyou, and then what they did with the BM 1 and 2 going the other way, is just ridiculous. Just use Beverley straight across, both ways).
  7. The work program reflects the final service pattern, but there's supposed to be a supplement that goes into effect first, showing it going only to 57th.
  8. Where did you hear that? I imagine they might do that when qualifying the crews (like they did on the Grand St. shuttle right before the north side of the Manhattan Bridge reopened). But then, since this is a full fledged line, it might be better to run a separate "school car" shuttle for that. Othweruse, the same switches south of the station that the used before will still be there.
  9. What cars are getting shifted to the ? (Being the uses four car sets and the uses five car sets).
  10. And what about employee qualification? I thought they would run special shuttles (rather than extending the , having to discharge at 57th. This is what they did with the Grand St. shuttle when they were requalifying everyone for the Manhattan Bridge North side. But it's easy to do this for a shuttle, not a full length line).
  11. Sure there is a close button. It's under the open button (you can see that on the 179 video, where it's the same. But don't feel bad. I'm just now recently realizing there's another buzzer button right above that).
  12. What I understood, was that this was a provision for a system that would include cameras that would allow the T/O to open either side without getting up and going to the other side. (Like LRV's have). My first thing, was, that's what the extra TOD screen could be used for, but then I was told that would have to add a new screen (which would be placed up, like near the sun visor or something). Not sure when, or if they are ever going to go with that, but they do include the capability to allow the possibility of doing that.

  14. Wow; that would be cool! It's like the two tone blue is a nod to the original blue scheme of the 70's, but also wanted to see the older green as well, and when I was wishing we would get Compo's, seeing the nice color schemes on them in other places, imagined perhaps the blue used on NYCT and the green used on MTAB. Then figured green might be better for expresses, but those are all parlor type coaches now. So it would be interesting to see green buses in the city again!
  15. I wonder if they're skipping the former R110B numbers. Which would be silly since they're totally out of commission, but I had gotten the impression I had gotten.

I don't know what the different K measurements are (if it's pixel size, then that can be increased by either making the display larger or making the pixels smaller, and this one was basically a whole wall), but I go by LED size (with the standard LED being 5mm), and these look like 1 mm, and almost as small as the amber LED's of the FIND text. The pitch on RGB's is still wider than others (because of the heat), but has gotten better on these new signs.

Speaking of LED's, at the new Apple store in Williamsburg, they have a display with the smallest RGB pixels yet: Fine enough for both the curtain-like bullet of the end sign, as well as the FIND (which we also saw in that illustration will use color now). So this is what we can look forward to!
  18. Do these other systems (especially the more “modern” ones) have tight curves like we do?
  19. And they'll never be gone; they'll always have to have someone in front for a system as big and heavily used as this; they'll just activate an alerter button. I wonder how the open gangway setup will work. Will it be like the old articulated cars, with shorter car body segments on a non matching number of trucks; or is it really 60 foot cars with the space sealed up? Not sure how they'll be able to have it sealed like that, and the cars not move too much relative to each other..
  20. Both Flushing and Astoria were built as IRT, and connected to the system via the Queensboro Bridge and Second Ave. el. The BMT then connected with it, but had to run IRT sized shuttles (8 Astoria, 9 Flushing) from Queensboro Plaza, while the IRT ran 7 to Flushing, its own original 8 to Astoria, and the el services. In 1949, it was rearranged, so that IRT picked up Flushing, and BMT picked up Astoria, which was then converted to what would become "B Div". Since the connection to the IRT was gone, when the NYCTA Control Center was created, both lines were connected to the B Div. map and radio dispatcher desk.
  21. Wow! A 160 option is what they should have done all along. Maybe now, we'll see up to #9998, for the first 24 cars.
  22. They reacted at the proposal to completely eliminate the by extending the , for that was the more familiar letter. But in this idea, they would still have the familiar old letter, and it would actually be the original route.
  23. What I would do is simply make the Continental to Bway Junction line the , and then when the viaduct is finished, CTL-MET would become (the original plan, actually), and would then return to Nassau, for the weekend service, which could then be extended to Chambers. (So the two designations would represent the two different routings in the same service pattern period, though running at different times). This will also come in handy for the work that begins afterward, when they will need to increase service, but be limited because of sharing with the on the IND, and all the delays that occur there. So they could actually use the Nassau (Chambers) for extra weekday service at the same time as the . (So now, the routes could actually run at the same time).
  24. Yeah, wasn't even thinking of Wallyhorse. Where is he? If I didn't recognize Peter Cafiero, I'd have to ask if maybe it was him impersonating an official! (Should also clarify that those alternate routings were only for weekends. Weekdays, it will still run normally, to Queens. But I guess everyone got that. I still say they will have to take the off of it's low priority status whenever there's any problem and they want to cut it out of the IND service!) Apparently not, as they seemed to specify 600', so it wouldn't use 143's or 160A1's.
  25. Was wondering how they would shift the cars around to get the full length (G)'s. The and will be getting the new cars, now designated for those lines by being four car sets. So it's a matter of where the 32's will go, and where the extra sets will come from. Didn't think of them putting them on the , but I guess that's possible. They also said the will be increased, and the work will free up some more of those cars. The 68's could be sent back to CI, which would free up 160's, but aside from the SAS expansion, I'm not sure where those would go.
