  1. SIR is to the subway what Canadian Football is to American Football. Close. Similar. If you've never even heard of the CFL but I showed you some footage, you'd know it's gridiron football. That being said,.. Currently the SIR has 15 trains... and they are getting 15 trains. They don't need all 15 to provide service since ideally, some will be undergoing inspection, and some will be in reserve, to the point having to take a bad car out of a consist and add in a replacement is more effort than to just say "just park that set and go get a different one". So, in theory, the could use an open gangway or at the very least, a permanently coupled set.
  2. It will start when Car Equipment says so. Also not before an internal bulletin on the subject is released.
  3. These tests are considered a GO. While the 211s are testing, E4 is classed as "out of service" and a temporary tie bumper is put down just south of 8th Avenue. The switches are locked in place and the signal system is disabled. the train operates on "line of sight", basically. and if any work that requires flagging needs to occur while the GO is in effect, R211 testing must be suspended. ------ In other business, the Q GO for next weekend is finally listed on our internal site. The shuttle will run to the Lower Level at 63rd street and the through trains will run to Ditmars to connect to the 7 at QBP. Watch me get that gig. I kept going to Ditmars for the N shuttle the last few weeks.
  4. This who process is chaos incarnate. Put it this way, normally, when we have a GO, it lists a supplemental schedule that we're supposed to use. This GO does not. It just says "LS", or "Local supervision"... basically a run leaves when the dispatcher decides it's time for it to go. (Ironicly I'm assigned to the D today and need to be uptown in about three hours.
  5. Ah, yes, rush hour chaos on a saturday the moment something goes wrong... Ridership numbers say we only need one of the two and in the circumstances, the N wins. The A is already cut short as well, so we will have extra R46s and maybe even a 10 car 179 or two. All I know is there is no direct supplmental service plan for this GO. The A and L have both operated recently with single track, absolute block shuttles. Never say never.
  6. Short circuit. remember that the tracks are not only the DC traction current return, but carry the AC signal circuits as well.
  7. As I understand it, the N would operate between Ditmars and 39th in a fashion much like the M when the Myrtle Viaduct was closed. Absolute block shuttles on single track operations. The 7 would never work for that.
  8. terminating at 33rd would require the train to relay, and the amount of distance west the train would need to travel would violate the power off zone for the GO. not gonna happen.
  9. Okay, the GO paperwork is out, the emergency GO for the Delta is an expansion joint on the Manhattan Bridge. I'm still not sure why they don't run split service from 205/BPB to 34th.
  10. Firstly because we like to run our locomotives cab first for better visibility and unless they're going the long way (or actually are going to CIY), he's going to have to run around the train more than once. while we do have procedures for "other than head end operation" where the locomotive could push, I would not be doing so with something so valuable. Secondly, more brakes, since the five cars are nothing but dead weight. Thirdly, the "rider car" (nothing to do with me) is partly because we're not actually supposed to couple the older types of locomotives together. Only the R156 class can be MUed together directly. It has an onboard generator for the lights. It's also where the extra, necessary crew can ride
  11. Some of the 143s on the L now have the new NYPD announcements programmed into them. three are in the special message menu and the fourth is automatic.
  12. The only way fans are getting into these events is if they also have press credentials and that’s for a reason… they’re specifically PRESS events.
  13. meanwhile... Crazy weather... I report to Bedford Park Blvd for the D yesterday. Sunny... Warm... I was sweating a bit... Get down to Stillwell? Cold, damp and fog so freaking thick I couldn't see the Parachute Jump at all and could barely make out the Wonder Wheel...
  14. yes. just not as often. We had it on sixth avenue a few weeks back... NOT a fun experience
  15. The SMEEs don’t have dynamic brakes. the technology wasn’t included in the fleet until the NTT design was launched.
  16. They are working on getting the 179s CBTC compatible.
  17. Deinterlinging leads to more transfers and less service, specifically because the terminal capacity is not set up to deal with one corridor having only one line. WHICH WILL RSULT IN LOSS OF RIDERSHIP because people are NOT drawn to high frequency and reliability, they are drawn to convenience. It's the same mental triggers that cause items to be priced at $19.99 instead of $20. If their one seat ride switches to two seats, they will seek other means to travel, because they will perceive their trip as now being longer. And it will be, because the line's capacity is set by the teriminals and with the exception of 179... they just can't handle it. Also happen to live on a live you pro-de-interliners love to give the short end of the stick to, so excuse me for not being on board with this nonsense.
  18. The purpose is to make people feel safer. Subway crime is not actually as high as it was in the past, it’s just drawing a lot more attention.
  19. Making up for the lack of downtime the line had over the summer.
  20. The 211s are still listed as being tested on the Sea Beach the next three weekends on E3-4 according to the GOs. the basic trade off is mechanical complexity. A 10 car train of single cars needs 20 control stands and 40 Door controls. A 10 car R160 set has only 8 MDCs and 4 control stands.
  21. Basically a once a day toll to enter Manhattan south of 59th street, to encourage people to take public transit. The collected money would be used to fund transit improvements. London has had one for years now.
  22. DCAS sent my reinstatement letter in the mail is such a crumpled up mess it was amazing it got to me in the first place. Not updating it is par for the course with them.
  23. There is currently no problem with lacking spare trains… because there aren’t enough people available to run them. We’re still short hundreds of train operators and conductors. Hell, the current conductor’s list will be used at least until 2024, 8 years after the test was given. Just imagine that… like applying for a job on your first day of high school and starting the day you graduate college.
  24. Saw her today. Half the pilot train is in the inspection barn at Coney Island and the other half is parked outside on the west side of the building. As I was passing on the N both times I could not see numbers.
  25. We also had the C types, which are closer to the "Gangway" trains the 211Ts will be. They were rebuilt El cars. The D Types and other cars of it's era were articulated. That round spot is actually resting on the motor truck, taking the weight of both sides
