    There's actually a MUCH better solution, although it involves a bit more creativity. And every hour? Seriously?

     

     

    NEXT:

    The flushing Line collapsed from the strech of 72-77 streets. The Roosevelt Avenue Station is heavily damaged. Only the Queens Bound Express Track can be used on the IND Queens Boulevard Line. Reroute ALL modes of transportation around the strech (i.e Buses and Subways). I know this is for subways only but lets see what you can come up with.

    I don't know buses, so I'll just deal with subways.

     

    (7) To avoid overcrowding, there are no trains between Hunters Point Av and Flushing - Main St. Trains run as connections to the LIRR extra service.

    (E) Limited service. No trains north of Queens Plaza.

    (F) The following service pattern in effect:

    ......Trains operate at 25 trains per hour during the rush.

    ......Trains operate in the peak direction only in Queens during the rush hour:

    .........AM rush, northbound trains terminate at 145 St. They then proceed southbound to Coney Island as (:( or (D) trains and wait in the yard.

    .........Middays, trains run in both directions at 7 tph. In Queens, the switch arrangement allows for this, if Manhattan-bound trains wrong rail between 71 Av and Roosevelt Av. Additional (F) trains operate between Queens Plaza and Coney Island.

    .........PM rush, southbound trains originate at 145 St, after having arrived there as (:) or (D) trains.

    (M) No trains between Myrtle Av and 71 / Continental.

    (R) No trains between Northern Bl and 71 / Continental.

    LIRR Lots of extra service between Jamaica and Long Island City, and between Flushing and Long Island City.

     

    NEXT

     

    Queens Blvd Express tracks closed. Provide as much alternative service as possible.

  3. Judging by the range of explanations for the issue at Prospect Park (at various times, the reason was a signal problem, a stalled train in BIE, a rail condition, and a general mechanical problem), I'm assuming that a signal went up under a train.

     

    What is odd is that the announcements at about 5:00 PM at Atlantic Av (even on the (N) platform) blamed a stalled Manhattan-bound (Q) train at Prospect Park. The odd thing is that that was at 7 in the morning.

  4. Section A of (1) train service: 242nd to 137th St-City College.

    Section B of (1) service: Shuttle buses provide service between City College and 96th St.

    Section C: (1) trains run between South Ferry 96th St.

     

    Do you seriously think shuttle buses would be adequate for that line? Buses were barely enough in Inwood when 181 St collapsed, and that's only because the (A) was right nearby.

  5. I try to keep mine to one or two station/area closures.

     

    ANYWAY... in this one I'll try to refrain from using a ridiculous number of single-track shuttles to provide service to out-of-the-way stations.

    (2) No trains between 149 St - Grand Concourse and Borough Hall. Trains skip Hoyt St.

    (3) No trains between Wall St and Borough Hall. Trains skip Hoyt St.

    (4) No trains between 149 St - Grand Concourse and Utica Av.

    (5) No trains between E 180 St and Flatbush Av.

    (6) No trains between 138 St and 125 St. Trains operate to Bowling Green.

    (7) No trains between Hunters Point Av and Times Square.

    (A) No trains between Chambers St and High St. No trains between Howard Beach and Far Rockaway. Trains run local in Brooklyn.

    (B) No trains running.

    (C) No trains between Chambers St and Euclid Av.

    (D) No trains between 161 St and 145 St, and between 2 Av and Atlantic - Pacific.

    (E) No trains between Court Sq - 23 St and Lex Av - 53 St. Trains run local in Queens.

    (F) No trains between York St and Delancey St, and between 63 St (relay via 57 St NQR) and 21 St - Queensbridge.

    (J) No trains between Marcy Av and Delancey - Essex. Marcy Av-bound trains run express after Myrtle Av.

    (L) No trains between Bedford Av and 1 Av. Limited service in Manhattan.

    (M) No trains between Myrtle Av and 71 Av. Trains run every 24 minutes.

    (N) No trains between Queensboro Plaza and Lex Av, and between Whitehall St and Atlantic / Pacific. Trains run local in Brooklyn.

    (Q) No trains between Astoria - Ditmars and Court St - Borough Hall.

    (R) No trains between 36 St and 71 Av.

    (S) Round-robin service in the Rockaways.

    (Z) Suspended, use (J).

     

    NEXT

    The 125 St Viaduct is discovered to have a structural defect. As a result, (1) trains cannot pass or stop at 125 St.

     

    Change (1) service and provide enough extra service on nearby lines to accommodate passengers.

  6. Manny-B and the WTC area is impassible

    All stops near Manny-B and WTC are closed

     

    I don't know what you mean by near, but I'll try.

     

    (1) Extended to New Lots Av via the (3).

    (2) Runs local between 42 St and Chambers St.

    (3) No trains between 14 St and New Lots Av.

    (J)(Z) No trains south of Delancey - Essex.

    (:) Service suspended

    (D) Trains run via the (F) between 34 St and Coney Island. Shuttles operate from Coney Island to Atlantic - Pacific.

    (N) No trains between Atlantic / Pacific and 34 St - Herald Sq

    (Q) No trains between Whitehall St and 34 St - Herald Sq

    (R) No trains between 36 St (Brooklyn) and 34 St - Herald Sq

     

    NEXT

     

    Cortlandt St (R) - closed and impassable.

    Grand St (B)(D) - closed and impassable.

     

    Provide as much alternate service as possible. Be realistic.

  7. Regarding 6th Ave FastTrack when is the first (Q) going to or coming back from Queensbridge? Because I would love to be on the first revenue service train that runs on SAS tongue.png

     

    ® trains have already used that connection many times in the past. Nothing new.

     

    If you want, you could of course stand at 57 St and wait for the first train that says 'This is a Queens bound Q train via the F line'.

  8. The (D) gets canceled.

    Why? And nothing else is affected?

     

     

    The 60th Street tunnel collapsed, flooding the tracks from the tunnel to 5 Av and cutting the power to 57 St-7 Av. What would you do in this disaster?

     

    (N) No trains between Queensboro Plaza and Times Square. Trains run local in Manhattan and via Whitehall. Free transfer available between Queensboro Plaza and Queens Plaza during this time.

    (Q) No trains between Astoria-Ditmars and Times Square.

    (R) Trains run via the (D) from Pacific St to 47/50 St, then via the (F) to 36 St (Queens).

     

    NEXT

    A train has broken down switching from the local to the express tracks at 34 St & 6 Av. As a result, no uptown trains can run via 6 Av.

     

    What would you do? Remember to provide equal-tph alternatives. No shuttle buses, single tracking, etc.

    Willamsburg Bridge is closed due to structural problems.

     

    The (2) can't get to/from the Lex Local except by going through the (4)(5) tunnels (both under the Harlem and East Rivers). And you expect the (A) to provide enough alternative service for the (1)(2)(3), which is around 40 tph? (The (S) already operates as frequently as it can during the rush).

     

    @Williamsburg Bridge:

     

    (J) No trains between Delancey/Essex and Marcy Av.

    (M) No trains between Delancey/Essex and Myrtle Av.

    (Z) All trips run as J.

    (A) Service increased between Chambers St and Euclid Av.

     

    NEXT

     

    33 St is impassable on the Lex Local - the expresses can still run. As you can't run the (4)(5)(6) all via express, you must reroute something and provide equal-tph alternatives.

    R-Rerouted via the D between Atlantic Avenue and West 4 Street and via the M between West 4 Street and Queens Plaza.

    I just noticed that it's not possible to have the C run express between 14 Street and 34 Street without having it skip Spring St too.

     

    Next problem:

    An incident leaves the Central Park West Line impassable between 59 Street and 125 Street. How could you change service?

     

    Why not this?

     

    I know this may sound a bit foamy, but it cuts down on switching as much as possible and keeps all lines with the same tph, whether it's the same service or not. Also, switches stay fixed pretty much everywhere.

     

    (A)

    (;) Runs via the (C) from 59 St to West 4 St, then via the (F) to Stillwell Av.

    (C) Runs via the (M) from West 4 St to Metropolitan Av. This reduces congestion at West 4 St Junction.

    (D) Runs via the (C) from 59 St to West 4 St, then via the (F) to Stillwell Av.

    (E)(F) Both trains run via 63 St and 6 Av Express, then over the Manhattan Bridge. The E then replaces the N/Q in Brooklyn, and the F replaces the B/D in Brooklyn.

    (J) Extended to Bay Ridge / 95 St.

    (M) Runs via the (C) from West 4 St to Euclid Av. This reduces congestion at West 4 St Junction.

    (N) No trains between 34 St - Herald Sq and Stillwell Av. Use the E in Brooklyn - transfer at 34 St / Herald Sq.

    (Q) No trains running. Use the E in Brooklyn and the N in Queens - transfer at 34 St / Herald Sq.

    (R) Runs via 53 St and 6 Av Local to World Trade Center. This reduces congestion at West 4 St Junction.

    (Z) Skip-stop suspended, runs as J.

    C No trains between Chambers St and 168 St.

    D No trains between 125 St and 59 St.

     

    NEXT

     

    28 St is impassable on the 1/2/3 line. Challenge: For each train per hour you leave in two sections, provide an equal number of extra trains per hour on a nearby line. Make sure passengers can easily transfer between the two lines somewhere. PS Avoid 2 via Lex as the East Side is over capacity as it is.

    (A) Trains run local between 59 St and West 4 St, then via the (F) to Jay St.

    (:( Trains run 24/7 and run local in Brooklyn.

    (C) No trains between Chambers St and 168 St.

    (D) Regular service.

    (E) No trains between 34 St - Penn Sta [express platform] and World Trade Ctr.

    (F) Normal service.

    (M) Trains run between Metropolitan Av and Coney Island via Sea Beach.

    (N) No trains from 34 St - Herald Sq to Whitehall St. Trains run every 15 minutes south of Whitehall St.

    (Q) Trains run every 15 minutes between Brighton Beach and Whitehall St.

    (R) Trains run via the (F) from 36 St (Queens) to 47/50 Sts, then via the (D) to Atlantic/Pacific.

  13. My solution was similar:

     

    (A) Regular service.

    (:( Runs via the (F) from West 4 St to Coney Island - Stillwell. Transfer at B'way-Laf for Brighton service.

    (C) Runs express from 145 St to Canal St.

    (D) Runs via the (C) from 145 St to West 4 St, then via the (F) to Stillwell Av. Other trains run between West 4 St and Stillwell Av via normal route.

    (E) Selected trains run express from 34 St - Penn Sta to Canal St.

    (F) No trains between Times Sq - 42 St and Stillwell Av. Transfer at 42 St for the (;)(D) to Brooklyn. Trains run via 63 St, bypass 49 St (no matter on which track), and switch south of 57 St.

    (M) Runs via the (E) from 5 Av - 53 St to West 4 St.

    (N) No trains between Lex Av / 60 St and West 4 St.

    (Q) No trains between Astoria - Ditmars Bl and West 4 St.

    (R) No trains between 47/50 Sts and Whitehall St. Trains run via 63 St, switching south of 57 St.

     

     

    NEXT

    Canal St on the 8 Av and B'way Lines is closed. No trains may pass or stop.

  14. There is also Lexington Avenue, and besides cut and cover is the fastest method of construction. Like I pointed out it won't take long to build if it took the fast way out.

     

    I'll try saying this reasonably. Again.

     

    You can't take three full avenues and fit the same traffic into two.

     

    Example: you can't fit 90 tph onto two tracks (but you can fit that on three).

  15. Here's my best effort on this one. However, I'm not sure what the 8th Avenue line has to do with it, since as you just said/implied, 8th Avenue only has access to the Culver line -- or in a pinch, Jamaica/Myrtle -- which doesn't help the Broadway Line terribly much.

     

    (F) rerouted to 53rd Street.

    (Mx) rerouted to Nassau Street, Montague Tunnel, 4th Avenue Local to Bay Ridge.

    (N) runs from Astoria to Times Square only.

    (Q) suspended, replaced by 24/7 B service.

    (R) rerouted via 63rd Street, 6th Avenue express, 4th Avenue Express/Sea Beach.

    (D) normal service, but slightly reduced to make room for additional (:P® trains.

    (G) extended to 71st/Continental to replace the (M) (and the (R) at Queens Plaza).

     

    I think you got a bit mixed up here. The 6 Av station at 34 St is also closed. After all, it's also called 34 St - Herald Sq...:tup:
